“Melody's Escape is almost feature-complete and is in a very stable state.
During this Early Access period I will focus on polishing the gameplay and aesthetics, and with the help of the community's feedback I will add more features to the game.
The game will also be ported to Mac and Linux, and will get more skins, hair styles and color palettes, as well as a Workshop integration to share your own custom content with the world!

Please note that there is no bundled music yet, so you will need digital music files on your disk to play the game.

Your feedback is very important and welcomed! :) - Loïc

Update v0.7.4: New skin & haircuts + a mod editor

Patch update v0.7.4.0: New skin & haircuts + mod editor

Major Changes
  • Added a mod editor/studio. You can now very easilly create your own skins, hairstyles and color themes and edit them all in real-time (Windows only).
  • Added "slow-mo" jumps in running sections, for very specific occurences where the music's energy drastically drops during a few seconds. Those jumps can be identified on the song preview graph by a blue vertical dashed line (note that they are quite rare and mostly found in electro music)
  • Added new hairstyles: "Long Twin Tails", "Short" and "Braided Ponytail"
  • Added new skin: "White Dress"
  • Added new color scheme: "Dark"

Modding Changes
  • You can access the new Mod Editor in the game's installation folder, under the name "ModStudio.exe". I will soon write a tutorial on how to use this tool, but it should be quite simple to grasp the basics if you're already familiar with Melody's Escape custom content creation. The main advantages are real time color editing and texture reloading.
  • Added a "belt" skin element for the character skin (empty on the default skin). This element is drawn above the legs and is tied to the position of the "pelvis" element. You can use it for instance to draw a skirt above the legs
  • Hairlocks are now drawn above the static sprite of a haircut.

Minor Changes
  • Added some noise/dithering to the sky's background gradient, so that the gradient horizontal lines are less noticeable and to get a slightly more gritty visual result.
  • Removed the background gradient in menus screen as it resulted in visible horizontal lines with some color schemes.
  • The flying mode's backgrounds were slightly offset so that they don't intersect visually with the orbs anymore, for better visibility.
  • Hair movement now flow more naturally for all animations where Melody rolls (especially with very long hairstyles where it was too stiff before)
  • Flying mode is now slightly faster and running mode is now slightly slower
  • Multiple changes to the default color palette
  • Fixed folders with a dot "." character in their name being shown as playlists in the music selection menu
  • Fixed scrolling the music list with LB/RB shoulder button (or PgUp/PgDown keys) being able to overflow if the list was small.
  • Removed the "disable dynamic hair simulation" performance option as its cost was quite minimal compared to its high visual quality impact.
  • Fixed fullscreen mode issues when restarting the game on Linux
  • The Mac port is now using universal binaries, which should fix Workshop Skin loading issue that prevented some players from running the game after subscribing to a skin.

Now available on Linux and Mac!

Melody's Escape is now available on Linux and Mac, as a native port using FNA/Mono.

Everything should be functional, except for a few issues with fullscreen mode that will be fixed in the next patch, and "drag'n'drop" which isn't working yet.

If you encounter any issues on those platforms, please don't hesitate to post them in the Linux and Mac support thread.
If the mouse isn't responding correctly after switching to fullscreen, you can use the keyboard to navigate the menus.

Basically this is what would happen if Guitar hero, Platforming games, and Your music all had a baby. Fun game and has varying difficulty levels for everyone :D. Only drawback is it is slightly laggy so ya know careful about that. 10/10

This is how I feel when wearing headphones while listening to music while in town. Especially when she activates the rocketboots.

Jokes aside, fun little game to just boot up and play a couple of songs with. A little wonky with the rythm part but acceptable considering it's automated. Definately worth the price. 8/10

So I'm actually kind of on the verge of recommending and not recommending Melody's Escape. I'll explain, of course, but in the end I do recommend this - just to a certain crowd of gamers.

Now, I have previously reviewed Audiosurf, and after finishing everything I wanted to do in Melody's Escape I moved on to Beat Hazard. All three of these games are similar in the whole "play your own music" motif, but each game has vastly different gameplay mechanics. And I have to admit, out of these three "play your own music" games, Melody's Escape did the least for me. Don't get me wrong, it's not a terrible game, just not a fantastic one in my eyes.

In short, Melody's Escape is a running game set to your music. You control a female protagonist named Melody and tap certain directional keys to correspond with obstacles, such as sliding, jumping, and kicking through blocks. There are sections for each type of intensity, as well. The background changes to a slightly hotter color and the scenery moves faster as the intensity of a song builds up. On top of this, there are also slow-motion sections of long jumps for cooldown segments of songs, which I think is quite a nice touch despite being rare, as I've only encountered such sections maybe 3 or 4 times out of the hundred-ish songs I played. Finally, there are multiple difficulties you can choose from. The easiest has you press only one directional key for each section of a song, and the hardest has you use both WASD and arrow controls for certain types of obstacles, which poses a substantial challenge.

However, besides the decent gameplay, this game has a few issues for me. First off, the visuals in this game are very basic and bland, and the game isn't nearly as visually appealing as Audiosurf or Beat Hazard. Even the menu looks rather boring. Unlike other rhythm games I've played, Melody's Escape features no music on the menu, and I think that's a nice facet that rhythm games ought to have. In Melody's Escape, the menu is just silence, save for the minimal "beep" sounds that you hear when selecting options on the menu.

There is also very little to do in this game and minimal incentives. There isn't a sort of leveling up system or anything to unlock, nor leaderboards for songs, rendering your high score on songs to not have much purpose. The only real incentive in this game is the 8 achievements, which are all relatively easy to get if you're going for them. It only took me around 8 hours to get them all. After that, it comes down to merely playing for fun. And I'm not a huge fan of games that are solely made to pass time unless there's actual incentives or things you can do afterwards.

Anyways, if you want more of a "for-fun" rhythm game customized to your music to pass the time with, Melody's Escape would be a good purchase for you. If you're into games with more of an incentive and contain more for you to do, consider Audiosurf or Beat Hazard instead. However, keep in mind this game is still in Early Access as I write this and is probably awaiting a few changes, so I can hope that some of its issues will get fixed in forthcoming updates.

Melody's Escape is a rhythm game where you play as a female protagonist and go on a journey based on the kind of song you are playing.

- In sync with the music very well
- Background is very colorful
- If you miss an obstacle it won't hinder the song
- You can customize your character
- 2 types of difficulty which are song difficulty and game difficulty
- Controls are almost solid (get a breif animation delay every now and then)
- Great rhythem game since Audiosurf

- Doesn't sync with spotify (only works with songs on your computer)
- Playing for a long peroid of time can hurt your eyes (due to colors and color changing)
- Sometimes the buttons don't register when you hit them on time (By sometimes I mean only 2-3% of the time this happens)

The game is great considering the price, it's also a new way to enjoy your music you almost feel as if your in that world working your way through the tune of the song. With steam workshop avaiable for this game as well i'm expecting there will be tons of new customizations for the character and possibly more backgrounds which will make the game even more awesome to play.

I regret hesitating to buy this game for this long. It's totally worth its price. Beat detection is pretty good, especially with songs that has a "running" feeling in it. I've played Audiosurf (for a long time enough to unlock all achievements), Audiosurf 2, Beat Hazard, Rhythm Zone and Polynomial (which is a something I regret a lot); and so far I can safely say Melody's Escape is on par with Audiosurf's song-analysis, if not better.

A "must-play" for all players who enjoy rhythm games, and something I'd mention to all my friends.

Melody's Escape is a nice rythm game. I like it a lot because it's customizable (e. g. Skin of Melody, background) and the gameplay is amazing. You might think: "This is a rythm game. It's gotta be both boring and hard at the same time. There's no way I could do that." I'm telling you, that's completely wrong.

While you're playing the track, you can listen to your most favorite songs. But don't let that song overwhelm you, you still have to control Melody.

Even though some tracks might be hard even on the "Relaxed" difficulty - you can't lose. There's not even a scoreboard allowing you to compare you with your friends or other people playing this game.

So yeah. These are my reasons for recommending this game. You definitely have to try it out.

This game kicks serious ♥♥♥. I wasn't sure at first, but once I got to playing it, I noticed how relaxing it is to punch buttons and keep the beat with some of my favorite songs. Very simple, and I've noticed myself getting steadily better, especially since there's no consequence to missing a beat. Most casual game I've ever played. Only thing I'd change is the movement of beats and obstacles, they're a little stuttery and tend to make my eyes hurt. On the plus side, I play it every night because it makes my eyes really tired, and it helps me sleep. 4.5 out of 5

This is the second greatest female character running from left-to-right dodging obstacles in time with my music game I have ever played. The only thing stopping it from taking first place is its complete lack of wireframe bunny rabbit protagonists. I give this game 10 vibs out of 10 ribbons overall.

This game takes some getting used to compared to Audiosurf. Your button presses have to be spot on in order to play effectively. Of course, if you don't feel like button tapping, there's a visualizer so you can at least watch your music being played. But just like Audiosurf, being able to play with your music adds virtually infinite replayability. Not to mention the art style is nice, and your character is actually kinda cute (reminds me of a Vocaloid girl, in fact). Still a good buy for $10, but if you're weighing between this and Audiosurf, I'm going to say right now: You're probably better off with Audiosurf. Much more accessible and newbie-friendly, and it's the same price.

I saw a trailer for this game a while back and I hadn't really thought to act upon it until just yesterday, and I can say for certain that this beats any other rhythm or music game I've played. The controls are very much so Guitar Hero-esque, but each one does different things when prompted, so you might duck under a floating platform, hop over a bump, and so on with rather visually pleasing aesthetics.

What really grabbed me, however, was the gameplay that is custom-tailored to the music you set the game to. All you have to do is drag and drop your music file onto the game window and off it goes, analyzing the music file and creating a series of obstacles for you to overcome as you run through alongisde the song. No other rhythm or music game I've ever played has had this kind of system where it makes the level for you just by analizing the song. Others I've tried were Frets on Fire, Stepmania, and the like and all of those required you to place the notes/beats/moves yourself if you wanted to play a game with your own song, which, if you enjoy doing that, then keep playing those ones. In the meanwhile, I'll be playing all the songs I want, as soon as the urge strike me in levels that are customized and built right at the very get-go.

And as far as the visual graphics go, the captivation and beauty of such simple design elements are quite stunning, and are such a specific kind of beautiful that it doesn't distract you from the gameplay, yet you can admire it in its entirety while you're playing the song through.

All in all, 9/10. Positively addictive and truly a beautiful-looking game. The musical analytical system is so brilliant, I could see other developers trying to emulate this sort of system for themselves. Bravo, game devs. Bravo.

I Highly Recommend this game for these reasons...

1.Its a nice change of pace
2.The whole idea of the game is Really cool i mean a whole stage being generated to the music your running to is awesome
3.The stage generation is actually dead on when ever you have to hit a button its the same time as a beat
4.The colours of the game is pretty
5.Character customization is included sure its limited but its still awesome
6.Steam Workshop and all
7.Finding your music in the game to put in is really easy
8.It has a "Recent Music" spot so you can re run on Music you have ran to before
9.It actually keeps a score of each song
10.Its still in Early Access so anything not in it can be added
11.It has achievements

So those are some reasons i recommend this game

however if you do end up playing it and the beats are ever off in the game thats your computer lagging i personaly havent had this problem but ya know XD

The beat detection and level construction is great. I haven't played a bad sync yet (I've played for a couple hours). It's fun, the graphics are nice, and it works with all of my music, which is great. If you like Audiosurf or other music games, you'll probably want to check this out. I was a bit nervous paying $10 for it, but I'm glad I did. If you're worried about it playing well with your songs, you can probably stop worrying about that. Fun game, and hopefully it'll get even better with future updates. The only negative I can think of is that the graphics have a tendency to blur pretty badly. This might depend on what type of monitor (refresh rate, size, panel type, etc.) that you are using though.

Edit: I am happy to report that an update and an option to remove anti-aliasing has tremendously helped this game on systems with integrated graphics. It is now perfectly smooth and a joy to play on my Surface Pro. 60 fps all the time. You shouldn't have any trouble with your laptop or pc with integrated graphics assuming the rest of it is pretty decent. ;)
