“Melody's Escape is almost feature-complete and is in a very stable state.
During this Early Access period I will focus on polishing the gameplay and aesthetics, and with the help of the community's feedback I will add more features to the game.
The game will also be ported to Mac and Linux, and will get more skins, hair styles and color palettes, as well as a Workshop integration to share your own custom content with the world!

Please note that there is no bundled music yet, so you will need digital music files on your disk to play the game.

Update v0.7.1.0

7 Maj 2014

- Obstacle timing accuracy ("perfect", "good" and "ok") is no longer displayed on the left part of the HUD, but is now shown in the form of floating texts next to Melody, to make it possible to pay attention to the timing accuracy without being distracted. By default it only shows "errors" (failures), but you can configure it in the "General Options" to show each obstacle's timing accuracy.
- The background lights are now more accurately synced to the frequency spectrum of the music
- The ribbon trail behind Melody (on long obstacles) is now smoother and with a new texture, and it starts a bit sooner when sliding on obstacles
- The transition animation from "walking" to "flying" is now smoother
- Added an option to toggle FPS, in the "Performances" options menu
- Slightly increased the scrolling speed of the background in flying sections, as well as the fog's brightness
- On keyboard, screens waiting for "any key" input to continue now only look for gameplay-bound keys presses, "Enter" or "Space", allowing to take screenshots if you've bound the Steam screenshot key to something other than the Function keys
- Switching from keyboard input to gamepad input during a track will now work when pressing the d-pad or using the thumbsticks (it only worked with the color buttons before)
- Pressing buttons during the intro walk will not trigger failures anymore

Flying mode: complete rework! Update v0.7.0

3 Maj 2014

Complete rework of the "Flying" sections

I wasn't happy with the current state of the flying mode, as it was too monotonous and didn't feel as "powerful" as it should to represent the most intense parts of a song. This was in part due to the lack of solid obstacles (requiring more complex inputs in Intense and above), and also due to the lack of distinct character animations and background visualizations to enhance the experience.

So I've completely scratched it and made a new flying mode with a new theme!
What I really liked about the old mode was the possibility to have a very high orb density, which isn't possible with solid obstacles in-between due to the animations' length, so the compromise I've found was to have solid obstacles only for long held notes, and orbs for regular notes.

Flying sections should now feel much more intense, and very long ones found in music genre like metal should feel more appropriate. Please let me know in the discussion board if you have any feedback.

Others

- Double arrows mix (Overload difficulty and Custom) are now inverted automatically when using a gamepad. You can still invert that result using the General options menu
- If a respawn would happen during a transition, it will now happen right in the middle of the transition instead of afterwards, giving you more time to anticipate the next obstacle
- Fixed the resolution change confirmation screen not applying video changes beforehand
- Fixed failure animations being horizontally offset in Intense and Overload difficulty
- Removed debug information from the window's titlebar

Quick Patch: v0.7.0.1

- Flying sections are now slightly faster in all difficulties
- Cleaned data files with references to the old flying mode (for faster game loading)

When I saw this game pop up in the store, I was quick to just go by and not pick it up. But for some reason, it wanted me to buy it. At first I thought of it as a mix between Audiosurf and Bit Trip Runner.

My guess was not far off.

The style of gameplay they chose reminds me of DDR with the WASD keys, and arrow keys being used. The keys are color coded for W (Orange), S (Green), A (Blue), and D (Pink). You also use the directional keys in Intense mode (where you use both WASD and Up/Down/Left/Right). The music analysis does a good job of deciding how it determines the beat of the music (Tempo, Energy Spikes, etc). It also displays how stable/unstable the song is based on the rhythm and beat. Some songs are match well, some you will noticed that the beat is not perfect. But for a music game to be able to adapt to that, I'll praise that.

The movement between different actions you have to perform is very fluid, and the speed varies with how fast and intense your song is. One song may be slow and easy to pick up, another song you may find yourself flailing your fingers on the keyboard hoping to hit something. One of the complaints I have is that there is quite a bit of motion blur when the music is fast, making it sometimes difficult to see what is coming up next. I don't think the blur is so much the game as it could be the monitor (I'm running on a 60Hz).

The timing is iffy at best, as it seems to either want to be Good or Perfect. It's difficult to determine where the best spot to execute the action is, but given it is an Early Access Game, I'll let that slide and hope it is better refined.

The game changes from running on the ground, to flying in the air, which is kind of cool. I do think that the transition from the ground to the air can be very sudden sometimes, which may make you miss a hit. Otherwise the flying is very similar. You either press the corresponding key, or hold the corresponding key.

Overall, I found myself playing the game with my music collection, and I enjoyed it. All the way from Sonata Arctica, to Pendulum, and more. The amount of colors and eye candy in this game make it very appealing. But do becareful, if you play for a long time, you may get eye strain and a headache from all the fast movement. What do you expect from a side scrolling rhythm game anyways?

I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys listening to music, and who also enjoys playing along with their music and chiming in with the beat.

I know I will be sinking a bit of time into this game.

Well, you can't "review" an early access title, but the above video shows my over-all impressions after 7+ hours of playing.

"Perhaps the best rhythm-based game I have EVER played, and I don't say that lightly."

I couldn't recommend this game more and it by far one of the best games I have played thus far in 2014!

For my full thoughts and impressions, see the video above for an in-depth look at the in's-and-out's of Melody's Escape. Hopefully that will answer and questions or concerns you have with the title. :)

Even in this early stage, Melody's Escape is a great game. It feels to me like the generated level is far more influenced by the music than in similar games like AudioSurf or 1... 2... 3... KICK IT!, which might just be because the gameplay is more connected to the rhythm of the song than AS's puzzle mechanics or Kick It's city generation. It reminds me more of "classic" rhythm games like BeatMania instead of other music-based procedural generation games (that's a word).

If you've got a couple of minutes, there's more thoughts on the game in this video, including what is missing from the game in it's current form, and why it is really hard to get used to the game at first:
