Reviews

“It quickly reaches those magnificent moments where you’re working out new rules on the fly, realising that if you apply previously acquired understandings you can make logical leaps and eliminate or highlight in a brand new way. Those are special moments that only very few puzzle games manage.”

It's like a cross between Minesweeper and Picross set to a soothing, chilled out ambient soundtrack, where every successful move plays a note that sounds like you're contributing to the score. Yes, it's as addictive as that sounds, but alas it's over in a couple of hours. But it's still enormously addictive, and there are two sequels...

Miner+paint by numbers puzzle. Short and quite simple (but last puzzle haven't logical solution for some reason. You need once to guess right). Have it's potential, but not fulfills it. Worth my time and money... but only because it was very short time and very little money. :)

This is a great little puzzeler sort of a cross between minesweeper and sudoku. (but a minesweeper that works) you never have to guess which is great. Nothing riles me up in a puzzel game more than havin to guess. If you are stuck sit back and look at every bit of infomation you are being given. you will see it eventually. I sat down and 100% it in one sitting so captivating that it kept me going and now I'm looking forward to playing the next two games in the series

I love it. It's like a mix between Minesweeper and Sudoku, I've been at it for hours trying to perfect this, plus and infinite. Not there yet but having a blast trying (And maybe crying a little in frustration but that's not important.)

As many people said: It's pretty much like Minesweeper, but(!) in a new way you wouldn't expect.
It tooked the basic concept and evolved it with fresh features and a mdern interface. You never feel like playing a simple clone or an old rusty game. The Levels are preconstructed which makes u avoid the logical dead ends known from Minesweeper. But actually that's a downside too! It took me 1:30h to solve all puzzles in the game and earn every arcivement. For 5€ this would ve been way to less. I can only recommend this game because buying the double package for 2.50€ seems fair to me for this nice little puzzle game.

This game is something. I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it, but I kept on playing and playing, and I'll be honest, I really enjoyed this gem. It's simple, yet very addictive. Think of it as Minesweeper but with no chances of fail, just less chances of getting to the next world if you keep on failing a lot. For three bucks, it's definitely worth it!

Nice game as an introduction to the series. I wish there were more puzzles at this difficulty. This game is easy and very short. Completed to 100% in less than 5 hours while tired and not thinking as fast as I would while fully awake. I think most will find the price is a bit high for the amount of content.

Many say that the game mechanics are similar to minesweeper crossed with Picross (nonogram puzzles) on a hex grid. I would say instead of standard picross mechanics it is closer to the mechanics used in Picross 3D which are actually somewhat different than standard nonogram puzzles.

At the end of each level, you are awarded with a certain amount of progress hexes which are used to unlock more levels. The amount of progress hexes earned depend on the difficulty of the level and the amount of mistakes you have made during the level. There is no way of knowing how many progress hexes there are for a specific level or, if you missed any in prior runs, how many are still left to earn. This is only indicated at the end of a level and can not be checked on again without completing the level once more.

Note that Hexcells Plus has a much higher difficulty than this game and not just more puzzles at a similar difficulty. If you found this game too easy or think you may be ready to try to take on more challenging levels, go try that. Don't be fooled by how easy the first few levels are on Hexcells Plus. By level 12 you've already exceeded the difficulty of this game. If you've played Hexcells Plus, my advice is to not bother with this game unless you found that the difficulty curve was too steep and are looking for more simple levels to better get used to the basics of the mechanics.

A very interesting and fun puzzle game that reminds a lot of minesweeper with a hexagonal grid (and probably a few other logic-based games). There are more rules, meaning that there is potential for much harder puzzles than minesweeper can offer, but since there are no randomly generated levels, the amount of time you'll spend on this game is minimal. Said potential is not reached, so the game is never really challenging, which does nothing to increase the length. (I had no problems completing all the puzzles in around 1.6 hours, so you could easily play through it in one sitting.) Still, there is one huge advantage: guessing is never required. Guessing is the one thing I really hate in minesweeper - of which I am a big fan, regardless - and to play a similar game without it simply feels wonderful.

I find that the sounds fit the game nicely; they feel calm and soothing and play short melodies as you click the tiles. This, along with the focus on number of errors rather than time spent (I'm looking at you, minesweeper clock), makes the game feel very relaxing, despite it being a puzzler.

Pros:
+ No guessing
+ Nice, relaxing sounds

Cons:
- Too short
- Too easy
- No randomly generated levels

If you like minesweeper (and/or similar games) this game is definitely worth the purchase. If not, I'd recommend you to try it anyway, since the game is quite cheap. For those who fancy something more difficult (and thus longer), Hexcells Plus and Hexcells Infinite increase the difficulty by several notches, fixing the first two cons mentioned above. (As you might also guess, the last one also has randomly generated levels, although they are significantly easier than the rest of the game.) In that case, this one might serve as a short introduction to the concept.

Call me finnicky, but when I play a minesweeper game I prefer it so that the game doesn't actually reveal what the particular cell contains. As you move your mouse over a cell, it wobbles and reveals the underlying color (blue for mine, black for safe). This seems to have been reported many months ago but not addressed.

Hexcells really feels like a combination of minesweeper and, to some extent, suduku. With no timed element, it allows it to be a bit more complex than minesweeper could be. I thought it was going to be entertaining for a few minutes, and so I was surprised when over 2 hours had passed.

Hexcells is a great spin on minesweeper and logic puzzles that manages to be utterly compelling. In some cases you may play puzzle games to be challenged, and while you will certainly find that here, the ambient soundtrack and sound effects allow relaxing gameplay. The downside is the short amount of levels - 36. Half of those you will breeze through learning the game, and the most taxing puzzles you can steamroll if you are not dedicated to making any mistakes whatsoever. If you are, it's likely to last 2 or 3 hours, perhaps more if you are not familliar with logic puzzles, but the very low price conterbalances that issue for this different take on the puzzle games.

I'ts more compelling than minesweeper, its less frustrating than minesweeper, it's better than minesweeper.

PROS:
Great mix of relaxing ambience and challenge
Freindly difficulty curve
Minesweeper without the 'red wire, blue wire' moments.

Cons:
Little content.

8/10

Many reviews say this is similar to minesweeper, so I was slightly hesistant to buy this game since I hated minesweeper. This game is very logical and fair. It is addicting and a lot of fun, simple to learn, but complex to master. The price is good as the game is short allowing new players to try it without a large monitary commitment. Great game all around.

An interesting, fun and original puzzle game. Every aspect of the game is well-polished. It does, however, appear to be quite short and simple (although I havent played through all of it yet) so I would recommend getting it in a deal.

Kind of like hexagonal minesweeper mixed with sudoku. It's forgiving if you make a mistake, but you have to go back and get everything right to unlock the final levels. Really good game idea.

A bit like minesweeper but with a lot more "mechanics?"
