Disapointed.. The game has all the elements to be a good twinstick shooter, but it's just lacking balance. The game itself is split up into questmode where you have to earn all your perks and guns.. Somewhat of a lazy way of lengthening the game lifetime, instead of actually focusing on the game modes themselves.
Once you've got all the guns and perks, you're all set! ..right? No..
The survival mode is much like the quest mode, in that there's an red thread going through most of the game. Being that there are hives spawning all across the board, and you've got to clear them out, else you'll be swarmed and die..
And the guns are just a major lackluster.. There's so many useless weapons, as in slow as **** to reload, or not a big enough clip. So what this basically forces you to do is to start whichever level and gamemode you're on, until you get a gun that's decent enough.
But the red thread is impossible to avoid, and it'll catch up to you no matter what. And that's fine! It's just not fine when it happens in a matter of 5-7 mins.. No matter what! The hives constantly pour out more and more mobs, and eventually they overrun your pathetic little person.. and then you die. And this happens over and over again, really not differentiating the way in which you die. You always die of being overrun, about 5-7 mins into a game.
It almost feels like the game is forcing you to play it with 1 to 3 other people, completely killing the singleplayer experience.
So the AI mechanics are disapointing, the weapons are mostly disapointing.. What about the perks then? Surely they are the saving grace? Nope..
The perks are plentiful and very helpful (obviously), but they're as cryptic as hell. They pretty much all have lengthy descriptions and tryhard humor on them, and doesn't really help you get the right upgrade in the heat of battle.. Instead you have to pause, break immersion and ponder WTF this actually does to your character. And a lot of them are just plain stupid, like instantkilling you for a better "score"... Yeah, that's helpful! "Gotta get those points!" :P
All in all, the game isn't horrible, as it's got all the right elements and the right idea.. The execution just doesn't seem that well thought out. It doesn't seem tested enough somehow. It's very short lived and anticlimactic when you've died for the 30th time to the same damn problem.
It just makes me want to play Nation Red instead.. Maybe not a fair comparison as this is an indie dev and all, but that's like saying "don't judge an Early Access game as a complete game". It's in the same genre, so I'm gonna.
So yeah, if you want a real solid twinstick shooter, try Nation Red.. Atleast they got it right and let's you play for more than 5 mins at a time. The game has a lot going for it, but it doesn't seem like it's ever going to change. Can't really recommend it at all, for more than a 3-4 hr fun time-killer. It doens't really have much replayability once you've gotten all the unlocks really.. hard difficulty is fine, but impossible is not. Buy at your own risk.
