The Plan, two year anniversary!

Hey good people! On this day two years ago, we released our little experiment The Plan. We’ve been through some exiting times since then, and felt like providing a little retrospective.

Some facts:
  • Over 600.000 people have played the game!
  • Over 50,000 have downloaded the game through torrents, even though the game is available for free through both Steam and our own website as a direct download.
  • 1,293 number of posts in just one of the discussions on steam.
  • Almost 8.000 reviews on Steam, lingering at a 9/10 score :D
  • Houndreds of thousands of views on lets plays on Youtube.
  • 1 unlockable character to be found in the game *wink*
  • 1 hidden soundtrack to be found in the game *wink*
Retrospective
The game was made in the afternoon and evenings in the winter of 2013, with no money put into it. It was launched on the 10th of february, with a brief mail to the press and a newsletter to our friends. There it was, right on our page.

Strangely, people actually seemed to play it. Kind people even wrote about it on sites like Eurogamer, RockPaperShotgun, Escapistmagazine and indiegames. Numerous lets plays popped up on Youtube.

We expected it to be this small thing, but suddenly it was talked about, played, loved, most probably hated, in any case cared about. It was a short game, and a humble beginning for us, as we had actually never released anything before.

Releasing a game turned out to be healthy, and The Plan gave us a moral boost that helped a lot during the heavy months of crunch left until ATS was released.

The following summer, it was even selected to be showcased at the Nordic Game Indie Night in Malmø, and later for the Notgames fest exhibition in Cologne!

After that we suspected everything would calm down, and the game would fade away. Until one day, when an email materialized in our inbox, letting us know the game suddenly was Greenlit for release on Steam! This was part of the first huge batch of games to be greenlit, so it came as a huge surprise back then. We were even greenlit alongside one of our friends Rain Games, and their awesome Teslagrad.

And thus, one year after the initial release, our free experiment saw rebirth on Steam as well. Once again, we got to experience countless discussions and more writing.

In the new version we also made an addition to the end, combining previous player’s thoughts and comments into a huge starry sky. Again, we were amazed at some of the reactions, a huge thread detailing what people had typed, discussions about what a game is, stories about overcoming difficult times. We even received touching emails from people around the world.

Numerous lets players also posted lot’s of great videos, delving head first into the game. One made a little short film, and another asked himself after playing the game “Is purple really purple” while looking at his hand. Poetry.

I guess what we’re trying to say is that in the end, hearing and watching the reactions of you people is what makes game development worth it. What makes it count. And we are very grateful for every last person who play and share their thoughts on our games.

Thanks so much playing! (For those planning to play it, make sure you have the newest version: 1.1.3)

À propos de ce jeu

A fly ascends to the skies, pondering the pointlessness of its brief existence.
The Plan was developed as a side project by Krillbite Studio, who's currently finishing their main project Among the Sleep.

  • "Hey, You Should Play This"
    - Patrick Klepek, Giantbomb
  • "Some may argue that The Plan isn't really a game and it definitely occupies the same terrain as Journey, Passage, and Dear Esther, but it's shorter than Journey, prettier than Passage, and less overwrought than Dear Esther, making it well worth taking a punt on for the low price of free."
    - Jeffrey Matulef, Eurogamer
  • "It’s that space in the mechanics for thought and interpretation that I appreciate most here. The Plan won’t break your brain, but it’s a nicely contemplative journey."
    - Nathan Grayson, RockPaperShotgun
  • "In order, here are the emotions I experienced during the three minutes it took me to play The Plan, the new free morsel from the Norweigan indie developer Krillbite: confusion, frustration, boredom, fear, amusement, delight, joy, enchantment, and regret. One of the things independent games ask us to do is accept that a three-minute game can be as valid as a thirty-hour one. Games like these make it hard to disagree."
    - Joseph Bernstein, Buzzfeed
  • "Krillbite Studio, the developers behind Among The Sleep, have gone on and released a most polished, visually stunning and freeware new game"
    - Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Indiegames.com
  • "Krillbite's The Plan is a short, sharp experimental deliberation on the meaning of life."
    - Andy Chalk, The Escapist

The most emotional fly simulator I have ever played.
Warning: May cause an existential crisis and force the player to re-evaluate their life.

This is probably one of the shortest "games" on Steam; it lasts only 5 to 10 minutes, and then it's finished. Many would argue it's not a "game", since there is almost no gameplay. In The Plan you are a fly, a fly with a plan. She wants to fly higher than any fly has ever done before, so she starts on a journey of discovery. You can lead the fly a bit during her journey, but in the end she goes up and up and up, and that's it as far as playing this game is concerned.

But arguing if The Plan should be called a game or not, is besides the point. For me, it's like a small but polished piece of art. If large and great games like Middle Earth: Shadow or Mordor are the novels of games, then The Plan is an exquisite poem, maybe even as short as a Japanese Haiku. It's all about atmosphere, and about the gradual changes in atmosphere as the journey progresses. These shifts are made through the artwork, and also through the soundscape. In the beginning there's not much more than the sound of the fly up-close, but once she soars higher, the developers with a stroke of genius added a piece out of Edvard Griegs hauntingly beautiful music for Ibsens play Peer Gynt: "Aases Tod". The emotional effect of this sudden musical layer took me by surprise, and made a deep impact. There are even many more "layers" to be discovered, but just as in any good poem, these should be left to the player's imagination.

So, just get this one, and treat yourself on a special journey. It's free, so don't object ;-).

Overall score: 9/10

The gaming equivalent of Maya Angelou's "Caged Bird," The Plan is an evocative tale of hope and longing amidst oppression and despair. You will experience the struggle of a fly ascending for five minutes on a journey to freedom, while being oppressed by spiderwebs, falling leaves and gentle gusts of wind. Metaphorically subtle yet complex, and breathtakingly powerful—bring your handkerchiefs.

This is definitely a relaxing little five minute "game" that is more like a piece of interactive art. I recommend it more as something to experience than as a game to "play," and I think people who enjoy relaxing games would be most likely to enjoy this. It's free, and it's an easy 100% achievement game for those who care about that, and I also personally found a bit of humor in it (you'll understand if you play through it until the end).

Very beautiful little piece of art. Recommended. :)

Short & Sweet (& Free).
I played this game for about 10min, & enjoyed it all.
You play as a fly. Not sure if theres a goal, or if all games end the same (i won't say how mine ended in case you want to find out for yourself), but i had fun for the 10min that i played it.
Got 1/1 Achievements, another (easy) Perfect Game.
Also, it's free, it's a small DL (112mb), so there's no real reason not to try it.
Enjoy :)

First off I would like to make sure that all understand that like 9.03 M...this is not a game, but an experience. That being said I did really enjoy it! :) I took quite a few screenshots, as well. I found the graphics quite beautiful and very much enjoyed the short time spent to finish. Also there are a few surprises in store that I was not expecting...that in and of itself is worth the time. The main thing is that this does not cost you even one cent so I highly recommend everyone should try this out...since you can un-install when you are finished. ;)...One noteworthy statement...to get the achievement I did have to go to the forum...but however if you can figure it our for yourself it would of course be MUCH more rewarding! ;))...Don't wait...go try it today!!...Sla'inte!

Gotta say I was pretty skeptical and wary of just how 'good' this experience would be, given how "amazing" other pretentious artsy indie games were. I mean; it's about a fly. But figured that for free and for something that was apparently so short it was worth a shot anyway. Even if I do have a bit of a bug phobia and actually wondered if I could handle 5 minutes of nothing but a fly.

Well... it's a good thing I didn't let any of that get to me. I wasn't prepared for just how impactful this game would become. First Aase's Death starts playing followed by an unexpected increased visual range and scope. The further you go the music builds and the visual journey becomes more epic until... the end. That's it. It's done in a flash. It gave me chills and made me tear up and then it was done and I just sat in silence for a moment as I pondered what I just experienced. It was so unexpectedly moving and really just plain unexpected in general. Such as life, which this 'game' portrays quite uniquely well in more ways than one.

Really... great things really can come in small packages. Even ones not at first visually appealing. See, this is what I meant about it being such a simple, yet eloquently conveyed metaphor on life. The Plan can be taken in any number of ways and can vary slightly in meaning and depth from person to person, making it more worthwhile to take five to ten minutes out of your day to play this little 'game' through once or twice respectively and see what you make of it.
