“Greater and more sinister things await us in the following episodes. I can't wait.”
http://indiegames.com/2013/01/cognition_an_erica_reed_thrill.html

“It is soaked with gloomy style, is gorgeous to look at and listen to, sets up its plot points with great precision, and takes off in the third act as it builds to a huge climax with a disquieting final shot that makes me genuinely eager to play the second episode.”
3.5/5 – Adventure Gamers

“An exciting story, an interesting main character, challenging puzzles, and a grandiose. atmosphere make for me this first episode a worthy spiritual successor of the Gabriel Knight series, which hopefully will be even better with each new episode. Besides The Walking Dead is the best for me so far (serious) Adventure game experience of the year.”

Short version: 81%
(Episode breakdown: 95%, 94%, 64%, 79%.)
A paranormal serial murder thriller packed into a point ‘n’ click adventure? It’s easy to sell this concept, harder to actually pull it off. Cognition luckily manages to do that, although not without problems.

Long version:
Psychic cops and serial killers are always a good mix in the hand of capable writers, and Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller is a nice example of that. It follows the struggles of the titular FBI agent, who needs to tackle not one, but four different murderers preying on the streets of Boston.
Her story is structured like a television miniseries with four self-contained episodes. Arguably, the first two ones are the best as they remain close to the concept of being about the investigations, while the third episode is just a huge plot dump constrained into a single location, and the fourth hastily ties everything together using a set of rather tired clichés (including the classic ‘you are suspended!’ one).

Still, the plotting is spectacular; each episode has endings that would make you grip the edge of your chair if they wouldn’t also feature the best, most complex puzzles, with perfect music to boot. The developers really knew how to reward patience.
As for the rest of the game, Cognition is a fairly standard point ‘n’ click (with an uncomfortable interface) that adds cognitive powers on top of the usual item manipulation. The use of these powers is not really consistent; there’s one that you invoke maybe three times in the entire story, even though you spend half an hour acquiring it.

Graphics aren’t too spectacular: the backgrounds look good, but the characters are weird and glitchy. The audio is a lot better with a memorable soundtrack, and all main actors do an astounding job playing their (fairly stereotypical) role. It really helps getting immersed in the game, which is always great for thrillers like this.

That was a really entertaining adventure/investigation game to play :

+ Good story
+ Nice graphic style
+ Good voice acting
+ Interesing and logical puzzles
+ Rather good music
+ The cognition system, clever and interesting to use
+ Trading cards and achievements

- Moving characters is a bit slow
- 3D models are not all that great
- Starting at episode 3, I had some funny bug with Erica's model : from time to time, after a load or a cutscene, her model was completly freaked out ... hands in air, head pushed back against her back, and head spinning 360° permanently ... funny to watch but kinda breaking the mood. It stops after you start moving her again.
- Some puzzles, though logical, are a pita (especially the one at the end of episode 2, requiring you to remember every insignificant detail of the case ... the map on episode 4 is also difficult, mainly because of the way it's presented)
- Some achievements (especially episode 1) require you to replay, in a slightly different way, almost half of the episode case
- Some dialogues or cutscenes can not be interrupted sometimes, not even sure if it's on purpose or a bug.
- Some inconsistancies : Erica pulling her gun on her partner, entering suspect locations alone ... not very plausible.

Despite those little flaws, it's definitely a recommanded game, imho.

NB : Expect around 20h if you aim for 100% achievements.

This is a wonderful game with a well-crafted and deeply engrossing story. It is basically a point & click adventure with some innovative twists to it. I highly recommend reading the prequel-comics before playing, as it sets out the background very well.

Since this game is so good, I'll get the bad out of the way first:

- Most animations are unskippable, as are some dialogues. If you accidentally click on an object at the other side of the room, you are forced to wait until Erica walks all the way over there and interacts with it before you can continue playing
- Unlike the classic take of point&click games where you could just pick up everything you might ever need, Erica often won't pick something up unless she knows she's gonna use it. This results in having to backtrack and having to go through places you've already searched just to get something you couldn't before.
- It isn't always clear what to do. It feels at times like the game is forcing you to use the hint system.
- Episode 4 drifts away from the standard point & click style and into choice-based dialogues where you die if you say the wrong thing. It isn't as fun as the previous chapters (gameplay wise).

Ok, now the good:
- Great detective story with many twists and turns, interesting characters and a well designed investigation at its center
- Erica's powers provide a very cool and unique take on the genre
- The game remains refreshing, providing new powers and other gameplay mechanics in each chapter
- Fun, challenging puzzles that will make you think outside the box
- Comicbook like graphics that fit the game perfectly
- Wonderful soundtrack that keeps you in the mood

If you're into the genre, this game is definitely worth your money.

A solid storyline and a very atmospheric game to be immersed in.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this playthrough, other than the parts where finding clues gets tough. Some scenes are so intense that I freaked myself out.
