In Game Dev Tycoon you replay the history of the gaming industry by starting your own video game development company in the 80s. Create best selling games. Research new technologies and invent new game types. Become the leader of the market and gain worldwide fans.

A journey through gaming history

Start in the 80s
Start your adventure in a small garage office in the 80s. Enjoy the hand-crafted level design while you develop your first simple games. Gain experience, unlock new options and create your first game engine.

Create games your way
In Game Dev Tycoon the decisions you make during development really matter. Decide which areas you want to focus on. Does your game need more gameplay or should you focus more on quests? These decisions will have a major impact on the success of your game.

Grow your company
Once you have successfully released a few games you can move into your own office and forge a world-class development team. Hire staff, train them and unlock new options.

Make larger more complex games
With experience and a good team, you can release larger, more complex games. Larger games bring new challenges and you will have to manage your team well to deliver hit games.

Named my company Valve,

released a game called "Half Life"
was an instant hit 9/10 overall rating!

Released a sequel later called "Half Life 2"
again, instant hit 10/10

Waited many years and released a third sequel "Half Life 3"
everyone hated it, I got a 3/10

Less than a year later, my company Valve went bankrupt.

Is this a sign? Does Valve know already? WILL HALF LIFE 3 KILL VALVE?

10/10 would develop number 3 again

My company went bankrupt after I released the exact same Call of Duty game 12 times in a row, all with slightly differing names.

0/10 not realistic.

I will admit, i pirated the game first as i didn't know how to buy games on Steam back then. But, now that i own it, i don't regret buying it and actually regret pirating it. Oh and by the way, in this game, Half-Life 3 is released. (As long as you make it, ofcourse.)

Game Dev Tycoon Review:

Overview
Game Dev Tycoon is a small game where you start up a game devlopment studio; starting from working in a basement into having a large workforce in a studio. The idea is quite innovative since you are literally taking on the role of making games inside of a game itself. Not such an attempted idea as the infamous 'Superheroes fighting against Villans in a large city' where the hereos always win. Anyway, back to the game. As a developer you choose the name of the game, the audience, genre, topic, which staff member focuses on what part of the game (such as Jeffery does most of the Graphical work, Stephanie focuses on the Sound and so on) and basically allows for mass customization. Heck, you can develop a racing game without any DLC's and that focuses on actual gameplay instead of pretty graphics that you will look at for 2.3 seconds before crashing due to high speeds. Keep in mind, the game tries to take itself seriously, so a game that focuses too much on one thing, too little on another, will recieve lower ratings (four gaming reviewers will rate your game x/10.) and therefore less sales. As you get more cash and more staff, a larger studio will become mandatory unless you want a smaller but more trained workforce (yes, you can train every worker to be good at a particular subject, such as Technological workers and Designers) so less workers will be stressed out enough to need a vacation (bad for business, games are meant to be made at a gaming company). You can plan out a strategy for your workers if you want, I remember I used to be a researcher due to a high speed rating (speed levels can make your worker to research/train themselves faster and become more efficient) and let them create the games.

Gameplay
Quite fun if you ever considered doing this as a job or a hobby. The game can be classed as educational in a way since now you know not to mix Racing with RPG or some other, terrible combination. It's fun because it shows brings you on a journey of a once single developer living in his (parents') basement and how their hobby turned into a job, granting them a lot of cash, workforce and vice versa. You choose how it plays out, choose terrible combinations and take it as a joke; you will stay in the basement. Actually pick something innovative; you will succeed in game development. Other than having a moral, the game is still fun no matter if taken seriously or as a way of passing time by since you can accidentally create an AAA game by raising all the sliders to full priority and watching the crowd go crazy racing to the nearest Gamestop. Quite hilarious.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:
Great fun
Moral
Cheap
Realistic situations
Decide the story outcome
Quite useful for future devs

Cons:
HuD is quite huge and not very attractive
TL;DR
Great game for a great price which is a great buy for a great deal of tips. Definitely worth considering on sale or buying the discusses sequel.

I have been gifted the key by the kind developers of the game. They make my review about games like this possible.
