It's a fun game and I have 45 games (on steam) and I have not played any other game longer in one sitting then this game. It's alwas bien a dream of mine to be a game dev, and now I can

At first sight, I was afraid I had purchased a mobile game that was ported to PC. The interface is very simple, the graphics and visual design is also very plain. The game itself, however, is a very solid "Tycoon" game. There's plenty of different directions to take games, new technologies to research and the constant churn of new hardware and consoles coming out.

I found myself creating franchises, releasing sequels, surprising my audience with quirky new games, bouncing between huge AAA releases and smaller titles.

I do wish there was some more polish around the interface, which didn't seemed pretty buggy (I had to click slightly below all the buttons in order to get them to work) and the game's pace does seem a little fast. I hope the developer continues to work on adding content to the game, it does seem a little light on the "events" that happen. There's really only 3-5 different things that happen over the course of the game and you'll see them over and over and over and over.

I was able to "beat" the game in less than 5 hours, but it does let you keep playing. Overall, worth the price of admission, makes me wish for a bigger budget version though.

Simple and rewarding, especially when your risky combination of Virtual Pet/Action-RPG for the Vena Oasis turns out to be a 10/10 masterpiece and saves your company from bankruptcy. The background story that ties into Game Dev Tycoon gives a faux history of the gaming industry, which is amusing but also allows you to interact with it as you choose which systems and markets to capitalize on. The lack of research points I often experienced was annoying though, and I wish you earned more so you could train your employees more often.

If you're a fan of management style games or have ever thought about making your own games, you'll probably like this. It's tons of fun and great for short intervals or long periods of time.

This game is fun for one or two playthroughs, but once you pass about 10 hours you begin to see the serious flaws in this game's mechanics. The basis behind game creation is chosing a combination of a genre, topic, and platform. Your game's success depends on how well the combinations match up. Some topics may work well as an action game, but not as a strategy game. Additionally, genres work better on different platforms. An RPG or Simulation game will work well on the PC, but casual games will not. Most of the best Topic/Genre/Platform combinations have real-world counterparts- a Millitary Action game on the Xbox 360 (Call of Duty) or a Fantasy RPG on the Playstation (Final Fantasy) have a good chance of being popular. But if you try to make a Wild Western Strategy game for the Wii, you're going to have a bad time. This is all very well done, and the best aspect of the game. There's a ton of topics and endless combinations to chose from.

When you've decided on a layout for your game, you go into development. This is where you decide what aspects you want to focus on. You can focus more on having good world design and story telling, or you can spend more time on a games AI and gameplay. Again, your success depends on the genre of game you're making. An RPG /Adventure game is better if you spend more time on Quests and World Design, while an Action game is better if you work on the AI and gameplay. You can also hire employees who specialize in different areas.

The biggest catch is: The game doesn't tell you any of the best combinations to start with. Game development from the beginning is completely trial and error. only after you release a game will you find out if you made the right choices. The problem is, the system is so unforgiving you'll be on the verge of bankruptcy by the time you figure out what works and what doesn't.

As you make games, your character levels up in different areas of game design, as those levels increase you unlock additional features you can put into your games. This all culminates into a custom game engine. You can build engines from the ground up that include various game features you unlock, that become more advanced as the game goes on. You add these features by spending research points (earned by playing) and money. As you progress, the features become more advanced and replace old ones, allowing you to add new things to your game. This sounds great in theory, but its incredibly poorly executed. Engines are incredibily expensive to build and it must be done fairly regulary if you want to progress. Also, there is NO WAY to upgrade the engine you already have. Unlock a cool new feature you want to put in you next game? You can, but you have to COMPLETELY rebuild your engine, which is incredibly costly in both game-time and $$. There is no worse feeling in this game than investing a million dollars into a new engine that only lasts you for 2 games before everything in it becomes obsolete.

By far the worst part of this game is the convoluted scoring system. The final review score changes depending on the scores of your previous best game. Say you hit it out of the park with your design and make a 9.5/10 game. Every game you make from that point forward will score poorly unless you make a big improvement over your best game. This means that the only way progress is to INTENTIONALLY make your games bad and incrementally impove them over time. There have been several times where I've purposely left out features I had available because I didn't want the game to be TOO good.
Example: You're far into the game and have a ton of money. You decide to make a new engine with all the best features money can buy, you make a Fantasy RPG for the PC called "The Olden Parchment: Oceanedge" and you put your heart into it. Every feature you have goes in, you use all the best employees and you make the best game you're capable of making. You release it and it gets a perfect 10/10. It breaks every sales record out there. Where you you go from here? Nowhere. You're actually completely screwed. You've put all of your best technology into your game and until you level up more and unlock newer better features, you have no way of possibly making a better game. The only way to continue playing is to pump out bad games with as little $ as possible until you can start over with a new engine.

That's the biggest flaw witht this game, and its really ruined it for me. The forced difficulty of the scoring system makes it impossible to be succesful and enjoy Game Dev Tycoon for what it is. Buy this game on a steam sale, donwload some cheat mods and mess around, and you'll have fun. Otherwise, you'll be disapointed once you figure out how this game works.

TL;DR- The awful game-scoring mechanic takes away from what the game does well. You're punished down the road for making good choices, turning the game into a counter-intuitive mess. Its not worth full price. You'll have the most fun with cheat mods, but even that gets old quickly.

I have put 65 hours into the game and ive only used mods for 15 hours of the time I have put in to it. The game is well polished and has alot of cool features.Theirs alot of replay value in it aswell and mods will make your experience with the game even better I say if you like games like this buy it now.

No. Seriously.
Besides of bringing a semi-fictional brief history of game development, this game provides you to live through the challenges of being a game developer in different eras. It is so much fun to experiment and discover what combination of game genre, platform and target audience is appreciated by the gamers. Your own experiences and insight sometimes proove you right, but sometimes they can get your company almost bankrupt.

It also gives a very optimistic sneak peek of how an indie game developer's life is.

Game Dev Tycoon is a fun and cute game, and I really enjoyed my two playthroughs. I will recommend it to anyone that likes simulation management games. The game is summed up well in the descriptions, so this review will more be my experience with the game and nitpicks.

I haven't fully figured out why some of my games fail, even though they were a great combination, and others just explode on the market. Which lead to me doing significantly worse during my second playthrough. The bank lending me money at least once during almost every stage of the game, but it was actually a bit funnier and more challenging when I constantly fluctuated between hits and failures.

The last phase was way to easy on my first playthrough, because I had no specialists in my team, so I didn't go into the labs. But even though spending money on discovering things in the lab and building consoles made it more challenging, it made it way more fun, and on my last years of my second playthrough I had the second generation of my console out and a hit MMORPG.

The reviewers in the game can be jerks. On my first playthrough I made a lot of hit games, and there were constantly two of them that switched between giving me 9, so I got 9.75 instead of perfect ten. Felt like they were just trying to keep me from getting the achievement. :( And like I said, I got worse at the game the second time, so I'm probably never gonna get that achievement.

There is a lot in the game, but it never gets too complex to manage. The game that comes closest to the same experience of playing for me is probably the sims series. Where you just keep playing and there is so much to do, and a lot of minor variables, but it is all easily presented and managable. However... It suffers from the same problem that the main Sims games have for, which is that there are no natural "exit points" no real quests, so it can be hard to stop before you reach the end and can lead to game burnout eventurally. (I know sims doesn't have an end, but this game kinda has one where you get your end score) You could argue every time you finish a game within the game it is an exit, but then you get the reviews, then it goes on the market, and while it is on the market or before it gets reviewed you put your team on the task of developing, reaching, or training something else. So there is no place where the game feels like it is a natural place to take a break I would love if they make a sequel or spinoff game where they include some kind of quests or in game objectives beyond the achievements.

But it is still a topranking simulation game, and I am glad I bought it. 9.75/10

Really Really fun game! When I got it loads of people said that it didnt have play time in the game but i defintly think you could put at least 25 hours into the game and not get bored. The game making is extreamly fun, and the game itself is quite funny with lots of funny easter eggs. I would defintly recomend this game to anyone!

A brilliant game. Casual yet engaging, a simple concept and design carried out very well.
There are many small moments in the game which remind me of some of my favourite games i've played in the past.
I would recommend this to anyone and everyone, but mainly to:
A gamer who wants a casual game or just to kill some time
or
Someone who wants a cheap game that they can invest time in.
Overall, I would say the game is 9/10 with no real complaints. I would very much like to see this game progress and become better recognised.
