Contagion is an action FPS involving everyone's favourite fictional creature, the zombie. Your aim in every match is to survive as long as possible and in some matches survive long enough to get an evac and if you're unlucky enough to be killed by the zombie horde you become one of them with the goal of killing the survivors. With ammo and weapons being very hard to come by how you use your ammo is of upmost importance.

+Nice graphics
+You get to play as survivors and zombies
+There are quite a few characters, each with their own backstory
+Quite a few different weapons, ranged and melee
+You can board up windows and doors to slow down advancing zombies
+Good soundtrack
+Headshots are one hit kill apart from on riot zombies, headshots are very satisfying
+You can play singleplayer or mutliplayer
+Workshop support

-Gets repetitive quickly and with no progression system it has very little replay value
-Hardly any players online
-Zombies don't look great, they're basically just grey humans covered in blood
-Some of the maps are very confusing
-Some maps don't have melee weapons so you're screwed if you run out of ammo

It's a fun zombie game but with little replayability this game is only worth getting if you're playing with friends and you get it on sale.

Hello all,

If you are unsure about purchasing this game, I sincerely urge you to please continue & read on.

The below review is my opinion of the game based on my perception of what I have seen over the course of many months. It is a sensible and honest review that I hope will give clear awareness to those who are thinking about purchasing it. This is neither a rant nor a fictitious piece of writing.

Firstly, it is with utmost importance that I emphasize this review may get reported by the developer named Tatsur0 who is the owner of Monochrome & Contagion. If you post an opinion which you are clearly allowed to do, so long as you are within regulations, he will flag down your post if he feels he does not like it. In laymen terms, if you have an opinion he will class your review as a false statement that therefore breaks rules. Please know that this is not a lie intended to jeopardize the developer[s] credentials. This is only a constructive warning. Please read all negative reviews of this game and you will find the developers response to be extremely concerning.

Unfortunately since an announcement which stated a lot of the developers left the company the game lost its momentum instantly & became pretty much redundant. No longer were there frequent updates or adding free content as was promised to those who spent money and backed Contagion on Kickstarter. No longer was there professional transparency as to why there was delays but instead fingers were pointed as if this industry is mere child’s-play. This is what brings me on to the reason why I and many friends will no longer play or support this game after doing so for so long.

How many people play this game?

Please go to and search for Contagion.

Currently there are “36 playing 23 min ago”

In all fairness, if you join an empty server players do start to fill it up but this is not guaranteed. There is not a huge amount of people who play this game. The developers rely on the promised free DLC to get the numbers back up but they will consistently tell none-buyers the game will pick up again after the DLC is released. This is for you to believe as we have been waiting months and months for the DLC. So based on the delay of the DLC, expect a long delay in player increase.

This is a word not to use lightly. It is so important that within any type of business you have a moral of professionalism that is the cover of your products reputation. This is not the case with Contagion. Tatsur0 [using him as he mainly replies to all of the negativism] cannot take any constructive criticism or hard-opinions about Contagion in any remote way whatsoever. Many other reviews also state this. It is up to you to do your research through the forum & through the reviews and make up your own mind as to whether or not you agree with this. I must add though, anyone with a clear and sensible mind will learn and see how Tatsur0 responds to his customers. He does it in a way which is condescending and extremely rude. He will treat you as if you are the one who is wrong and you are the one who is stupid. Please look closely at this. Professionalism? I’m afraid not.

Personal life mixed with work:

This should be an obvious one. When it comes to your real-life-work, you do not post your life story to all of your customers as excuses. This is just not professional at all. To show you in more detail what I mean, please continue to read on.

Below are official quotes from the Contagion forum, Facebook and so on.

1 - Alright, I'm off to eat dinner with my family, sleep, and head back home to the States after 13 years in Kyoto, Japan”

2 - “Also as for the quick update. I got home a little late due to traffic”

3 – “I as well had to use an alarm and have the wife call when that failed haha. But things are going very well.“

4 – “It's been 13 years since I've stepped away from my PC and not worked but my mom came out for surgery all the way on the other coast and I will be seeing my nieces and nephew this weekend.”

5 – “Sorry guys, Alex flew in this week to sort out Corporate accounts while also meeting up with our CPA. Due to this I've been in and out of conversations with our tax attorney and grabbing the necessary info overseas”

6 – “Due to the loss of a close family member may he rest in peace I would again like to apologize for further delays as I spent Friday with family.”

7 – “It's nearly Thanksgiving for many and even if you're not celebrating (in my case my family is still in Japan until immigration gives the go ahead)”

8 – “Even with me flying back home to the States to save the Company additional expenses and get me on a timezone”

9 - Wish me a safe flight(s) and remember just cause I may not be around

10 – “Alex Wright (Monochrome LLC, COO & Lead Animator) just has his first born "Colby Wright" and is at the hospital with his wife”

When others also noticed this and mentioned that is was utterly unprofessional, the CEO of an Incorporated Company named Monochrome, Brian "Tatsur0" Comer replied on the forum which is quoted below:

"I will speak freely about my personal life and don't care how individuals feel about it as I promised to be transparent about delays and other inconveniences. I don't want anyone's sympathy but do not care for those who feel I'm making up excuses (sorry but I can find less morbid excuses to make up). Deal with it."

He just does not care and that is from his own mouth.

However, these are only little amounts of quotes that are public for anyone to view for themselves. Can anyone else fathom why this amount of personal detail is brought into the update of the game itself? Some may appreciate this and I get that but there should still be a limit to how often you post such things? Look how much he clearly talks about himself rather than talking about the game or the FREE DLC. Has anyone wondered how or why he can talk in such intricate detail about his personal life with great transparency yet he cannot talk like this regarding the free DLC or future updates, animations and so on. This type of behaviour worries me especially when we are the ones who give such people our money.

I had to talk about this because I believe it is bad for your business to post to your customers that you are stuck in traffic, that you are going to eat dinner with your family, that you are going to sort out company taxes when instead you could of talked to us about why the animations have taken years to be added into the game and so on.

Free DLC Status:

For those who have been able to stick around long enough you will have heard about the notorious free DLC that was promised over and over again. Now I just want to make a point that I hope some will appreciate. You can always throw in my face; well they are giving away free DLC! Yes, this is true, but at the same time look how long we have been waiting for this free DLC. Just because something is free does not mean you can show the dog a bone and tease him with it every day and expect the dog not to get a little mad or upset. This is the case with Contagion.

In a nutshell, if you like traditional zombie games and love the Source engine and you are not bothered about future updates or features or bugs to be fixed frequently, then go ahead, I’m sure you will enjoy this game for some time.

If you are however a believer in customer loyalty, respect, real-honesty & professionalism from a business. You prefer your game to be updated when bugs/glitches that jeopardize game-play are not fixed then I’m sorry but I feel you will be in my humble opinion not happy buying this game.

In the end, it’s totally up to you whether or not you will purchase this game.

Thank you for reading this review.

Let's face it, many gamers are getting sick of Zombie games right? You may be one of them. But the truth is there really aren't ANY Zombie games available right now at all. Not one.

Contagion is the closest you can currently get to a TRUE Zombie game.

What makes a true Zombie you may ask?

*True Zombies are reanimated, dead Human bodies. They DO NOT sprint, jump, spit acid, have tentacles or any super abilities at all.

*Only destroying the brain can end a Zombie.

*They are slow, stupid but persistant and immune to pain so they never stop, no matter how torn up they get.

*If you are bitten, you're done, you will die and turn.

This game ALMOST gets it right. It is SO CLOSE!
It does feature slow Zombies that never give up. They keep coming and will tear through doors and windows to get to you, even if you remove their legs and arms.
It also features lethal headshots, although it loses marks because you can still end one with enough bodily harm. But headshots are EXTREMELY satisfying as you literally blow half the target's head off.
It even features a chance to be infected with a bite or scratch, turning you into one of them and allowing you to try and kill your former team mates. Although it loses further points because you may still survive.

The maps are large, much larger than I expected and it can be easy to get lost in them. You can survive alone in Single Player or online with a group. Cooperation with other, real players is the only way to survive the harder difficulties and modes however. If you go it alone, you WILL run out of ammo and you WILL get cornered.
Spectator mode turns you into a Cockroach and lets you run around, following the action and laughing which is a nice touch. Just don't get stepped on!
It also has full controller support, just run it in Big Picture Mode to make use of it.
All up it's very addictive and at the time of review is expecting new maps and modes as well as weapons to make it even better.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this game so much that I wanted to write a review. Let me start off by saying there are PLENTY of zombie titles on Steam for around the $20 pricetag, except none of them deliver as much as Contagion does. This game is so much fun to play, even if you decide to play escape mode alone, it's still a blast to play.

This is my go to zombie game every time. The graphics are great, I have no complaints there. They really do a great job in the graphics department. It's just so pretty and smooth. The guns each have there own feel to them, you don't feel like you are using the same gun like in most games. The game modes are some of the best, you can play escape mode which is more objective and obviously you do the objectives to get to the end to escape. The best part is its all randomized so you never play the same objectives and can throw you for a loop just when you think you know what to do. There is Hunted mode which is PvP based and is so much fun, there aren't any Panic servers I don't know why but I haven't gotten to play that game mode. Extraction is very challenging, especially if anyone died and becomes a zombie, you really have a tough time and adds to the suspense.

The very fact you can be a zombie is huge in this game, they do it right. If you die too many times as a zombie though you will stop respawning and you become a spectator which can really bum you out, Only negative thing about the game is that. I love playing all the game modes however, and there are plenty of people to play with. They really emphasize the headshots in this game, and if you dont you will run out of ammo SO fast and you will die.

I have nothing bad to say about this game, and the developers are still working on this amazing game and are about to release a free DLC to us buyers with 2 new maps 4 new guns and more.

You will not regret buying this game, it is a blast to play.

One of the many things i love about CONTAGION is its old school zombie feel which feels alot more authentic in its sense of isolation and dread. Its the only game that has me not only feeling unsettled but actually scares me. Every time i play i feel as if am a little child having a nightmare after just watching NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DAWN OF THE DEAD. The level design, eerie yet strangely real world lighting, the i am there level of detail, the haunting slow stalking pace of the soundtrack and most of all the stars of the show the terrifying Zombies relentless abominations who know no mercy and no concept of morality. A curse upon the human race as we gaze up to the skies to ponder could there be such a god to allow such evil to be visited upon the living?

Over confidence is not your friend. CONTAGION gets this message to the player perfectly. One minute am starting to get over confident fighting slow moving zombies and the next am being overwhelmed by circumstances i may have avoided if i had kept my guard up. Eventually this starts to ingrain itself into my mindset which only enhances the fear factor as i hear wooden boarded up windows in the distance breaking and i tell myself oh man i better get downstairs and seal that off as i see a zombie entering the house from the other side of the hallway. Scary.

This is also the first game in a long time where playing on higher difficulty levels actually enhanced the gameplay making the whole zombie end of the world setting more believable. Playing on easy was alright for learning the layout of the world but CONTAGION thrives on high tension and electrifying terror. Any less and one is denying themselves some incredible gaming moments which feel like a classic zombie movie made manifest.

CONTAGION.. they are here to eat you. BUY IT! PLAY IT! Before.. its too late.

A few grievous errors in detail. The leaves on trees sway in the wind, but a flag a few feet away from said trees does not. Also, the flashlight doesn't reflect in mirrors. I want a refund, and a written apology signed by AND personally hand delivered to my residence by the lead programmer.

Originally I gave this game a positive review because of it's potential and it's survival horror elements/gameplay. My friends and I had a lot of fun playing this game even with the limited number of maps/overall content.

However, I'm changing my review due to the communication between the developer and its community. The developer for this game cannot take constructive criticism. How these guys deal with this is awful. I'm not upset about the wait for the new content. I understand it's free which is great. I am upset that they deal with their customers so poorly.

Pass on this game.

This game feels like a Half-Life mod. It's absolutely not worth $20. There are only 6 or so maps, and half of them are long big maps, and the other half can't really be considered "maps" at all because they're just a single house or two and you hold out against wave after wave of zombies. Yawn.

Overall, the game just feels unpolished, like not a lot of effort was put into it. After about 3 hours, I felt like I had seen everything there was to see.

It's also pretty misleading. Their intro video mentions how ammo and guns are found in logical places - no they're not. Wrecked humvees will have gun cases and crates strewn all around with no ammo/weapons (you can't open anything except doors) but go into a women's bathroom and you'll find sniper ammo in the sink. There's lots of random nonsense like that which completely takes away the immersion and survival aspects the game claims in it's marketing.

So overall, a pretty disappointing game. It's not terrible, and if you're playing it PvP with a group of friends, you can get some laughs out of it for a few hours. But it just feels like a mediocre Half-Life mod. Your lights have an annoying "camera grunge" effect that we couldn't figure out how to turn off. The animations don't seem to have any blending, so they look awful. Your arms that hold the guns look strange and contorted, very unnatural. It's just a mediocre, unpolished game. I don't recommend it.

Have you ever wanted to play a serious hardcore survival horror game online with your friends? Well, you've found Contagion.

Contagion is a survival horror game with zombie virus as theme, and has online multiplayer support, both co-op against the AI and playing against human zombies. Different modes for different gameplays. You can escape a building full of infected zombies and scarce resource, cross a city looking for a safe place, escort civilians out of a small town or even go crazy and play with your friends as humans and zombies. If you are looking for multiple gameplays, I'm happy to tell you the items and the scenario changes, forcing you to handle different threats and unexpected situations. The game really has this aura that brings you into the survival mood. It makes you want to save ammo, to stick together with your friends, to work as a team.

I recommend Contagion. It has a lot the features and the atmosphere of a survival horror, and brings the best of your solo or co-op play. Its only downside is the need of more maps. Most particularly for the "Escape" game mode.

If you like zombie survival games you'll like this one.

You can play coop to scape the infestation like L4D, you can play PvP where you have to scavange for weapons and fight the other players and zombies.

I like this game because different from Infestation and DayZ, where you waste hours looking for guns and stuff just to get killed and lose everything, in this game you just find guns really easy and then go PvP, and once there's just one guy left the game is over and will restart. Also, if you die, you can play as zombie.

Not the best graphics, but it's a good game 8/10

One of my favorite games. On the store page one of the curators describes it as a first person multiplayer resident evil 2 and that is exactly how i felt. Tatsur0, one of the developers, is trying to get steam to do another free weekend so if it sounds interesting be sure to try it out. I would recommend trying first because a lot of people dislike it.

To be honest this only adds tiny additions, with most of the major components of zombie shooter available in free games such as No More Room in Hell. Until, their is something absolutley different I can't recommend this. Sure you have player matches, and the missions are always different; yet no more room in hell does the same thing, despite it not being as extensive.

This game has potential, but falls flat on the design phase. The zombie mechanics are flat and dull. It's the same old thing since Stubbs the Zombie, circa 2005. Anyone who has been playing games for more than 10 years knows this is old news.

The game is one part Zombie Panic, one part No More Room In Hell, one part Stubbs. It is no better than any one of them.

For that reason, I can't recommend this game under any circumstance, unless you have $5 and need to play a sub par zombie game.

I’ve played most of the zombie games recently available. Contagion is easily my favorite. The only other game that comes close is the Nazi Zombies series.

As an adult gamer, I don’t have much time. I play at least once a week with my friends online. We use a mumble server. Voice chat is absolutely necessary as teamwork is insanely important in this game. You will not be able to run off by yourself and survive. I have a dedicated private server. Which is easy to set up and lets us play without trolls or kids. We prefer the coop “escape” mode.

The best thing about this game is how brutally hard it can be. Head shots are the only practical way to kill zombies. Ammo is so scarce every single shot counts. It is common to be down to your last two or three shots with zombies on your tail. You can run away, but eventually you will have to stand and fight. Finishing a level is very satisfying and a real accomplishment.

The levels are enormous, but well laid out. Some game modes do not have a map, so getting lost is possible. Once you learn them you will not get lost, as most are fairly linear.

The downside is that there are not many maps. The game needs about twice as many maps as it has now. A few people have released maps via the workshop. While most of these are very good, there are not many and few people play them.

Ever wished L4D was less about running ASAP from A-B with magical infinite-ammo pistols & minor punishment for getting killed, and more like a first-person classic Resident Evil with full co-op that wasn't a disappointing or underpopulated mess? Well, here you go! Admittedly it's certainly a niche market and obviously not for everyone if they just want to shoot some zombies, but get some like-minded friends in on the action with a private server and you'd be surprised at just how enormously replayable the (currently) small roster of Escape maps can be, especially on Extreme difficulty. Hell, even joining public servers full of randoms manages to go against the usual online experience and can often wind up being remarkably fun. A game that will sometimes feel a little rough around the edges the more you play and experiment with things, but certainly not enough in any way to ruin the experience.
