As someone who enjoys good point-and-click games, this was an averagely good one, though it wasn't an awesome one. As someone who's read and loved Agatha Christie, the constant references to her books, character and herself are simply adorable.

Things I liked about it:
  • The plot felt like a tribute to Agatha Christie's mystery novels, even in certain apparently far-fetched plot twists. There are also nods to what became the "classic" plot in mystery novels. I loved it when one of the characters said something like "what do you think, we're going to come up with new surprise characters?" or similar. Even the cheesy romance that flourishes in the midst of adversity sounds like a nod to Christie's novels.
  • The music is very nice and goes well with the game.
  • NO PIXEL HUNTING. No extremely absurd combinations of inventory items, like "oh, let me glue cat hair to a baby rattle to make a crossbow".
  • The voice acting is not outstanding, but it's good enough to keep you in the atmosphere.

Things I didn't like about it:
  • There are several bugs. You get stuck walking but not moving, characters disappear in the middle of dialog, you disappear, objects disappear from your inventory, then they magically reappear. Sometimes you just have to restart from a previous save.
  • The graphics looked unfinished. Sometimes I could see the eyeball through the angle of the eyelid, details like that.
  • The movements were very awkward. Sometimes you arrive somewhere and have to examine an item, and for that, the character stops, turns left, stops again, turns a little more, stops again, then you have the animation of the character examining. Then, a pause, then the character's comment about it, then a pause, and then you can continue. It's not too bad, but it gets annoying after a few hours.
  • There aren't enough puzzles, though it's probably fair to say that I don't count as puzzle using a key to open a door, even though sometimes these things can be considered puzzles by others. The very few puzzles are generally too obvious, especially with all the help you get. Sometimes you examine an item, and the character comments something like "Oh, that would be useful to do this or that...".

In general, it's fairly entertaining and I enjoyed it, probably because the continuous references to Agatha Christie kept bringing a silly smile to my face. If I had to grade it, I guess it would be 7/10, though I'm not sure I'd grade it like this if I hadn't been a Christie fan.

La crème de la crème

After two playthroughs, and all achievements unlocked, I thought it was time for a review.

The game takes place in the 60's. An exhibition is undertaken in Caïro in Egypt in a museum where for the first time, two of the most expensive, or priceless jewels, the two "Eyes of the Sphinx" will be exhibited together. Unfortunately, one of the jewels, exhibited in the British museum has been recently stolen. A raven feather left on the premises, mark of the famous burglar, known as The Raven. He left one guard severely injured. The Raven is the most wanted thief all over Europe. A skilled, talented burglar whose every attempted burglary never failed. Strangely enough, The Raven never took the life nor wounded anyone and even less, never used anything like bombs. Plus, he's been shot a few years ago by the hands of the french inspector Legrand. Is someone trying to steal The Raven's indentity? Or is he The Raven himself? This would mean that fame brought to inspector Legrand for his incredible feat was wrongly attributed.

The Raven is an unuasual novel-like point'n click game in which you play a story from the perspective of three different characters, including two villains. Anton Jacob Zellner, Swiss policeman, the main character, has all the characteristics of an antihero. Old, fat, small, bald with an adorable yellow shirt (ironical). On the cusp of retirement, he grabs his one last chance to prove himself and when he heard about the renowned Inspector Legrand being in Switzerland, he just couldn't pass up. He then insisted relentlessly to join in the adventure but next to Legrand he just feels like being left out of the loop. Legrand just keeps rejecting his assisstance out of hand, just like he refutes what Zellner says about the New Raven not being the Raven, because of the modus operandi that doesn't fit the latter's.

The Raven pay great tribute to the infamous and legendary writer Agatha Christie and her novels, as the game features Lady Westmacott (the name under which she wrote some of her novels) herself. Anton Jacob Zellner is Poirot's double, with the same characteristic moustache. Beautiful scenery that prompt warm nostalgia, setting choices that are great reminders of Agatha Crhistie's novels. And last but not least Lady Westmacott had a lifelong interest in archaeology. Not a coincidence that Lady Westmacott in the game is heading to Egypt. Thing you will see in the game by having her sitting before egyptian monuments in the museum in Caïro remembering the good old times with her husband. A valuable character for the wisdom she speaks. After all, SHE is the connoisseur, right?

In Agatha's novels, you only discover the criminal's identity at the very end of it. And you are misled all the way through. The Raven is no exception to that. Awesome plot twist and a lot of surprise. Rare are games that gripped me in such a way.

Letting you go through the story from different perspectives was a great idea. As I paid a closer look to the details and how things were pulled together from the three different characters playthrough, I noticed some inconsistencies between them though.
Plus, while finishing the game you might even want to beat the game a second time, from a vantage point. Pay closer attention to the different dialogues, details, etc.

In a point'n click adventure game you need to run around interrogating people, and they have to be entertaining. The game deals with mature subjects. Rich background for every characters. I liked how they designed the different characters, midway between cartoon and reality, with exagerated features. The game is slow-paced, calm.

Unfortunately, the game is flawed with a ton of bugs, programming bugs. Game mechanics are broken so are animations. Plus I don't like how they walked, their gesture quite a bit weird. Why didn't they take the time to iron out those awful programming bugs and rushed to release it. Besides, the annoyance may encourage players NOT to finish the game but the game has one of the best ending I've ever seen in a video game. What a pity when the game has incredible works put into it.

Music - Beautiful and memorable music (orchestra) . I just can't get the main theme out of my head.

- The soundtrack posted by Shin4kuma on Youtube

Gameplay - Simple enough, as long as you can click on an object or someone, it means you still have to deal with it/him. Each collectable items will go right into the inventory. You may need them later and of course sometimes you can combine some of them.
Something I have noticed is you don't have to solve every secrets to keep progressing since some are optionals. Besides, every secrets solved earn you some points, which you can use to get hints. Something you really don't need. If you solve every single secrets though, you'll unlock the master detective achievement (steam). The game is not difficult and you won't need to check elsewhere than in the game as you won't get stalled.

The Raven will be a memorable game for a long time, at least for me and goes directly into my favorite games. The game provides very good storytelling with some funny moments, atmosphere and a lovely soundtrack. Otherwise, I would have not recommended the game, since it has many programming flaws. A great tribute to Lady Westmacott's work, one more reason to recommend it. Two of my best genre (detective/P&C) in one game, what not to like? If you can overlook those pesky bugs, go get it.

i know you have relsed the game but its kinda broken, and no follow ups or any sort of patch to fix the known bugs, its been posted all over steam boards and the internet forums

Review of The Raven - Legacy of a Master Thief

"An Epic Legendary Thief. A Thrilling Adventure. And a Surprising Ending."

The Raven - Legacy of a Master Chief is one of the best detective games you should really play. The story is profound and unique. The puzzles are not that hard that you won't fallout of the story plot. The ending actually surprised me. I really didn't expect it. The Raven is your usual point and click game but instead of just clicking items and picking them, The Raven focuses more on investigating every detail. It means that you have to examine each item in the game many times until you exhaust all that could be examined.

You start as Anton Jakob Zellner, a Swiss Police officer, assigned to assist and accompany the famous inspector Legrand as you guard and protect the two jewel eyes that are to be exhibited in a museum in Cairo, Egypt. Your role is mostly what detectives (well, police officers) do in every crime scenes, INVESTIGATE and ANALYZE each situation along with the items available at the moment. The game offers some hints but if you want to be a master detective, you don't need to rely on those things. The game is divided into 3 chapters with each can be played independently from one another.

Some Negatives:
The only negative I could find is that the game sometimes have some bugs. Some click points positioned ways off from the actual item and the game has a bit of bugs when you try to move your through a narrow room. There are also times that your character can get stuck.

The game is quite pricey but I bought mine on a 75% sale and it was totally worth it.

My Personal Rating:
Gameplay: 7.0/10
Story/Plot: 10/10
Graphics: 9/10
Music: 10/10

Overall: 9.0/10

Excellent adventure game. A few areas are challenged by items that are hard to see (and therefore hard to discover) and a few times, you have the inevitable "oh, really, I was supposed to figure THAT out?" series of interactions, but overall a great game with a spectacular story. Execution is good to "above average" with two serious bugs encountered, but otherwise a smooth experience.

All 3 episodes were fun to play. The characters were pretty good and their presence in the game believeable. The graphics were decent for this style of game. The only downside I would give was that it was sometimes difficult to find exactly where to click to get a chcracter to leave the scene and go to the next screen on.
But all in all this was a good effort by King Art's and for those that have never played the game I would recommend it. If I was going to give this a rating out of 10. If I was comparing this to a triple A title then of course it would score low but if I compare it to other games I have played that are similar to this one then I would give this a solid 7 out of 10

If you like Point n Click Adventures then i would definitly recommend this. The environment and characters may be a bit childish, but nevertheless the game has some great aspects and decent graphics. The soundtrack and the atmosphere it creates are just phenomenal. It somehow took me back to my childhood made it feel like a crimestory with a strong touch of a Disney fairytale. As cons id like to mention a few bugs (rare but unpleasant) and although i liked the story, maybe it could have been a bit longer (my actual gaming hours are like 20h). The riddles are pretty fluent and easy but you should expect that just by looking at the game design. But in the end i have to say GOOD JOB!! I WANT MORE!!

Worth every penny.
All doe the game play can sometimes be boring and you are stuck with fixed camera angles despite the 3D environment the story is very complex and manages to surprise you every time you think you know what's going on.

I wasn't expecting much from this game when I bought it but I can now say that it's become one of my favourite graphic adventures.

It's hard to find games with plots that don't take you for an idiot these days, and in that way The Raven took a risk. The plot is in no way complicated but it is above what we usually see in videogames. The characters are all likeable and the strings it pulls are darker than I expected for a mystery story with a thief main antagonist.

The weakest point of the game is the gameplay, which doesn't bring anything new to the genre and is buggy at times. It is hard to navigate comfortably through the environment, and I had to use a guide after being stuck for a while only to discover that I had encountered a bug instead of a puzzle.

Sadly, the character animation and modelling isn't as good as it could've been, and detracts a lot from the enjoyment of the game. It does it's job but better art direction and animation could have easily turned this into a masterpiece, but it still remains an overall excellent game.

I'm a big fan of adventure games, but this game runs into all the pitfalls of the genre. A plodding, clumsy story, and arbitrary, poorly communicated puzzles. You can safely skip.

The Raven, a classic feeling point and click game that takes you on a journey to find a gentleman thief.

The story is slow in the beginning, but picks up shortly after the first chapter. It will bring you to think deeper about what is going on around you and to think about what every character is doing, and how they are involved. Very sow paced, the movement of characters, the dialogue, the questioning, the stories.

It makes you use logic to figure out both hard and easy puzzles, from opening secret passage ways to attaching a light bulb to wires to light up a room, its a very fun and interesting experience.

The movement I found was slightly annoying on computer. The angles of the camera made it really hard to see different doors and items at some points. Some rooms would even be pitch black, making to scan the whole screen with your map (unless you wanted to use your detective points, reducing your overall chapter score at the end)

Fun twists and characters that you can enjoy, good and bad,

Personal Score 3.5/5

This is a lovely, traditional point and click made as a homage to Agatha Christie, and the references are delightful for fans. The graphics are good, the voice acting good and the music absolute perfection.

This isn't a hard game, but you can skip entire side plots by rushing. I both like and dislike that, and in the end I reloaded from an earlier save to experience that part of the game. So be aware, and listen carefully to what characters tell you. It isn't however important, but sad to miss parts due to scene triggers.

I would recommend this game as a solid title without convoluted puzzles and with steady story progression - all aboard the Orient Express!

Finally a point'n'click with a not-dissapointing end. I enjoyed this game very well and the ending was also good enough, what is very unique in p'n'p adventures.
My only problem was, it's impossible to play on 4:3 monitor. The settings accept my resolution and didn't transform the picture, but cut the both side. So I cannot find every hotspot. But later I set the resolution to 16:9 and then everything went fine.

I've been on a point-and-click bender, lately. I don't know what sparked my intense nostalgia, but I'm pining for an experience like the old Lucas Arts classics. I'm jonesin' for some Indiana Jones or Grim Fandango. The Raven, unfortunately, was just lame and tedious. Really underwhelming. If P&C is your thing, it's worth a try, but this entry is probably not for a casual fan of the genre.

The Raven - Legacy of a Master Thief 3/5: Adventura starého střihu, vycházející z odkazu detektivek Agathy Christie... Epizodické, rozporuplné a se spoustou toho dobrého (bohužel) vyváženého stejnou měrou toho nedobrého.
