Update 2016-05-25

We're pleased to let you know that the latest update is out! In this update we've paid special attention to car-to-car collisions to make them more weighty and dynamic again, and now major crashes will more often result in the cars taking air or flipping over instead of just sliding around. We'll continue to improve crashes and at this point we'd love to hear what you think; are the cars now flipping over even too easily? Do the crashes feel weighty enough? Are they too hazardous from the player's perspective?

In the other news we've also improved the AI. Not only it's quicker and more aggressive towards each other and the player but now it also reacts to being bumped into to boot by swerving around and sometimes downright losing control and crashing - how cool is that? :)

Other goodies are included as well with full changelog below.

CHANGELOG:
  • Added the 3Ds Max AI Geom Gen tool which was missing from previous update.
  • Added missing track cameras to Mixed 1 Reverse.
  • Fixed see-through track geometry and improperly placed props on Mixed 2 Reverse.
  • Added PSD templates for menu assets (event icon, loading screen, results screen, car icon) under mod example folders.
  • Increased racing AI aggressiveness: AI is now more inclined to try to ram the player or the other AI drivers if given a chance.
  • Improved racing AI: it's now faster and drives more loose to give it a more natural edge.
  • Racing AI now reacts to being bumped or rammed by possibly losing control and/or spinning out.
  • Added graphics setting presets Low, Medium, High and Ultra (Settings > Graphics > Presets).
  • Added command line option '-disable_mods' to make troubleshooting easier in case mods are preventing the game from launching properly.

As always, thanks for your support. Please keep the feedback coming in!

Update 2016-05-20: Steam Workshop Support + Track Modding

We're happy to let you know that the latest update adds full Steam Workshop support to Wreckfest! Thanks to the Steam Workshop support we will have one centralized hub for all the custom content created by our exceptional community, and enjoying it is as easy as it gets: simply browse the workshop and subscribe to the mods that you want to, after which they will be automatically downloaded and appear in the in-game mod manager. The best part is that Steam will automatically take care of keeping your subscribed mods up-to-date so all that's left for you is to enjoy them! And if you're a mod author, sharing your creations to the masses has never been easier: simply click a button in Bag Editor, and your mod is uploaded to the workshop, ready to be downloaded and enjoyed. For more information on publishing your mods on Steam Workshop please see readme.txt in the tools folder.

And wait, there's more: track modding support! Yes, it's something that has been requested by many and sure enough, the latest update also adds all the necessary tools for you to create your own tracks. No matter whether you want to create an F1 circuit or a drifting course, it's all now possible. To get you started we have included a collection of example assets in mods/example/track.

Speaking about modding tools, in case you haven't noticed our awesome community member Dummiesman has created a Blender plugin to export game specific models from the popular free and open source modeling application Blender, eliminating the need for 3ds Max. The most up-to-date version of the plugin is available on our community forum here.

As always, please let us hear in case of any boo-boo. Thanks for your support!

CHANGELOG:
  • Initial Steam Workshop support. Subscribed mods will appear in the in-game mod manager after they've been downloaded. See tools/Readme.txt for guidance on how to upload your mod to Steam Workshop.
  • Track modding support. All custom track data is stored in the mod's data/track folder. See mods/example/track for two example tracks (minimal and a more complete one) as well as tools/track_modding.doc for additional info on how to create your own.
  • Improved Mixed 1 track art and added a reverse variant.
  • Improved Sandpit 2 geometry and added more gameplay props.
  • Added a reverse variant for Mixed 2.
  • Fixed server browser crashing with custom tracks.
  • Retuned car-to-car collisions.
  • AI is now faster in tight curves.
  • Player starting car is now C class.
  • Improved Bag Editor with little bits here and there.
  • AI names can now be customized by editing data/property/career/ai_names.txt (UTF-8).

About This Game

Wreckfest is a new demolition derby themed racing game with soft-body damage modeling, sophisticated driving dynamics and in-depth vehicle upgrading, featuring both demolition derbies and more traditional track races. It’s all about fun, breakneck racing and over-the-top crashes.

Expect epic crashes and tight, neck-to-neck fights over the finish line on run-down racing tracks. Expect proper demolition derbies. Expect brand new ways for metal to bend and the signature once-in-the-lifetime moments that can be achieved only with true-to-life physics simulation.

It’s a motorsport, but not just any motorsport. It’s a motorsport with attitude.

Unique Racing Experience

First and foremost, we’re building a FUN racing game with PERSONALITY. It’s all about the stuff that really matters: varied tracks, cool cars, and the defining once-in-the-lifetime moments that can be achieved only with true-to-life physics simulation. If you’re familiar with our previous games, you already know what we’re aiming at: exhilarating racing action with sophisticated physics and damage modeling, only this time we’re upping the ante on almost every front. This is the game we envisioned way back in the early 2000s, only re-imagined for today’s technology and gaming standards.

Awesome Cars

The cars are old, cheap, banged up, patched together, rusty… just awesome! In short, our cars ooze with STYLE. You won’t find anything like them in other racing games. We’ve got variety, as well: everyone loves the old American heavy-hitters from the muscle car era, but we’re not neglecting the fun little European and Asian cars from the long-gone decades either. The best part is that you’ll be taking them apart and building them back up again in your garage; the career is as much about your garage and your project cars as it is about racing.

Exciting Engine

Our in-house ROMU engine is a hell-bent beast that's precision-engineered for high-speed, breakneck racing. We have also already implemented fully deformable soft body car damage, meaning that the cars will react to damage in a very tangible, convincing way. While we're focused on action, motorsport authenticity is not forgotten, either. To that end our engine is simulating vehicle dynamics in a very sophisticated fashion. Rolling resistances, casters and slip angles are definitely not ancient Greek to us, and you as the player will be the one benefiting from our expertise.

EARLY ACCESS FEATURES

The current Early Access release contains four playable cars and a number of tracks, showcasing both white-knuckle track racing and explosive demolition derby action with 24 cars that will give you taste of things to come. During the coming months we’re going to give the game a lot of polish as well as implement many new exciting features, and all Early Access supporters have a unique opportunity to get involved in the development of the title!

We’ve also giving a playable Technology Sneak Peek 2.0 to all our Early Access supporters. The sneak peek features a playground that we use internally to test various features various like car damage and environment destruction. Version 2.0 includes new destructive machinery, more dynamic stuff to blow up, spectacular stunts and an awesome physics cannon that we use to play with our physics engine. With the physics cannon you too will now have a chance to cause mayhem to heart’s content by launching missiles, throwing stuff around and destroying the environment as well as the cars!

  • NEW: Steam Workshop support!
  • Extensive modding support: create and modify cars, tracks, physics and a lot more.
  • Full mod support in multiplayer.
  • Online multiplayer with 24 players.
  • Dedicated server support.
  • LAN multiplayer.
  • Eight cars: American Muscle I, II & III, European Hatchback, American Sedan, European Coupe I & II and Asian Coupe, each with unique handling traits.
  • A number of different performance and handling upgrades, mimicking selected real-world parts.
  • A number of gravel, mixed surface and tarmac race tracks, many inspired by real-world tracks, featuring both normal and reverse layouts.
  • Many fan-favorite tracks like Figure 8 and Speedway I & II, guaranteed to offer total destruction with 24 cars.
  • Four different derby stadiums: Speedbowl, Stadium, Small Stadium and Mud Pit.
  • Various race and derby game modes including Team Deathmatch with up to (!) 24 cars, all with dynamic damage.
  • Soft-body car damage physics system that doesn't need a super computer - even online!
  • Highly configurable support for force-feedback wheels, pedals and H-shifters.
  • Dynamic content that reacts realistically – fences and billboards break down, tires fly around.
  • In-game Photo Mode and Replay with a number of cameras, configurable field-of-view and depth-of-field.
  • BONUS: A playable Technology Sneak Peek 2.0 - Have fun in the physics playground!

UPCOMING FEATURES

Wreckfest is currently in early Pre-Alpha stage, and the Early Access version is going to serve as a basis on which we will continue building the game based on your feedback on what works and what doesn't. Throughout the Early Access phase we're going to gradually add more content and new features to the game, with some of the most important key features planned being:

  • Improved car damage and handling.
  • More cars, each with different stylings and performance.
  • More race tracks and derby stadiums with varying surfaces.
  • More dynamic content on the tracks to drive through and crash into.
  • Highly configurable multiplayer with a variety of modes.
  • Extensive player garage and car upgrading system.
  • In-game classifieds to buy and sell cars and parts.
  • Streamlined and polished user interface.
  • Improved graphics quality and performance.

Please note that all features mentioned here may be altered or removed during the development of the title if deemed necessary.

Still wandering when the special edition dlc will become available, I bought it 2 years ago and have been patiently waiting but it feels like an insult that it's on sale with no notice of when it will become available, at least give us the special edition cars to appease our loyalty.

Horrible handling of the carrs, this is not good, I've played - and loved - Rally trophy, Flatout and Flatout 2, this I've tried for about 10 minutes now and I really hate that I gave them the money, hopefully they'll spend them on a future *good* (as I know they can do it) game.

This would be the first ever game I'd want to use the money back feature on, normally I put my lost money into the "I should've known better" jar of lost money and learn my lesson, in this case it's they who should've known better and the sad thing is I know they can do a whole lot better... (but I fear there's no way I can get my money back, at least I hope I can get someone else to not spend their hard-earned at least)

This game was going to be a great game.
Then they stopped developing it for a while.
Then they ruined the handling.
It was supposed to be completed in 2015 and still hasn't been completed.
This game will likely never be done.
BeamNG.Drive is likely the better option of the two.

Great for online multiplayer with friends. This game is worth it just for the figure 8 racing.

For all the whiners about it being slow in development, who cares, it's early access and there's no other game out there like this.

I have had my eye on this for a while and picked it up along with a few other games.

I am oddly surprised at the lack of campain or direction when playing the game,

It feels hughly incomplete and plays like a tech demo
but considering how long its been in EA, rather sad.

Refunded.

I'm so sad this game hasn't become what I hoped it to be (essentially Destruction Derby 3). Hopefully Mods can save it if the developers can't.
All it needs is more cars, smoother controlled cars*, more tracks and a much better UI.

By smoother controlled cars I mean faster and easier to control, more arcade-y, like in DD2 (which I played a fair bit of). Also cars that land better when you go straight over a jump, not try and flip themselves back.

(I recommend it, but beware of slow development)
I don't usually review Early Access games, but since the recent updates the fun factor of this game is coming back again, and I'm also gonna point out some things since there's apparently a Hate Bandwagon going on.
To start off, this is a simcade racing game in the vein of Destruction Derby 2 and Eve of Destruction (not a Flatout successor as some people thought it would be). It has got impressive car damage and deformation, fully functional online mode with dedicated servers, AI opponents and complete mod support. This has potential, but getting it now or when finished is only up to you (even though I agree it is a bit overpriced for being an alpha product with not much content yet).

I disagree with most of the negative reviews this game is getting.
-"The game is a simulator and destruction is missing":
this is totally false. The destruction is there and it's cool (especially since the last update from May). The driving model, although being realistic, is not sim-y at all. Perfectly playable with keyboard. Don't have any skills or just want to smash other cars? Enable driving assists.

-"The game is abandoned"
no, it isn't. The development is slow, but it's still being worked on. Funny how people and recent negative reviews keep saying that even though we're still getting updates regularly (after a looong wait because of a physics overhaul). It's clear as crystal in the News section...
There are also some people who buy the game now because they had it on their wishlist before, and instantly refund it and giving a negative review saying "it's still an alpha since ages and it sucks". I agree, it sucks, but they don't know what the devs went through with the physics overhaul and making online, mods and general builds as stable as possible. Bad things during game development happen. The updates have been frequent this year, though.

It's like people are still stuck in the seventh build that came out a year ago, where the new engine was still at its prime and has made things worse for the most part, after months of waiting. But today, the game is going in the right direction, and I've been playing it since the pre-orders even came up so I know what I'm talking about. Heck, I even got the very first build of the game still in my pc and comparing it to the actual one. Only the driving model was drastically changed.

All I can say is that you should try the game yourself. I cannot guarantee you this game WILL be finished obviously, but there's always the ability to refund if you don't like it or just want to try the alpha version before the final version. Worth picking up during a sale, though.

This game has slowly gone from bad to worse over an incredibly incremental period of updates over several years.

The revamped engine looks mediocre compared to the older engine especially in terms of lighting, the physics and damage model is no longer nearly as chaotic, which makes for a much less entertaining game in general, seeing as it is not a sim.

The developers are likely shutting down and this unfinished game will be drip fed on life support by modders, which is far from ideal.

Another Early Access game I very much regret buying. Bought it because I loved the FO games. Abondonwared after the scumbags got their early access cash. As someone closing in on 1,100 games, I highly recommend avoiding early access titles at least until they are near their go live dates. Too many end up just like this.

Step 1: release early access

Step 2: promise heavy damage physics and demo derby gameplay

Step 3: Sack that all off at the halfway point, remodel entire game, lose all aspects of the game that people bought it for.

Step 4: Introduce modding, so devs can exit game and leave community to do what they will with the bare bones, shitey game they left behind.

Suck my ♥♥♥♥ Bugbear

If you want to know where the game is at now days.. Look for Santa Clause.. You'll have better luck.

So the game was awesome and they were going in a superb direction.. but BugBear have decided to stop all development and open the game out to modders.. A game that modders don't play as they are already in places like Race Department, Touring Pro series, Race2Play and the million of other PVT leagues / Communities places and on games like rFactor / Assetto..

So you may get 100 mods but 99 of them will be crap and fan made and you MIGHT find a proper gem now and then.. when an actual modder picks the game up and works with it..

So to sum it up.. ALL gaming development is on stop and they are adding things for the modders to use..

Ohhh and the 30 to 40 players (on a good day) that are logged in playing the MP side.. Yeah. The modding is going to split up the small player base to Modded servers and non modded servers..

YEY.. Let us download content that only 2 others are on.. Oh wait, they have changed the server.. download new mod..

No thanks.

REALLY Angry about this because this could of been the very best game of it's type.. now it's going to be rocking in the corner of the room because of the abuse it's sustained by BugBear.
*Slow clap*

Absolutely love this game, have done since the very first sneak peek and public version, every update added something diferent, some made a certain track worse, the rest have only added to how the game is, other reviews from people that haven't played the game too much really are missing the point, once you get to know players the game only becomes more enjoyable as you become part of a community, the modding updates bringing the whole community closer together. whilst also making the game ready for a multitude of different mods ranging from tracks from older games, to fictional ones, to improvements and a large variety of new cars, I, for one, added an old VW van into it and soon a Mini, others have made Lancias and Dodge Chargers and track ports from Destruction Derby 2!
Take it as you will, but this game isn't dead in any way

Just...don't. It's been two years and the game has barely changed. Any changes that have been made are for the worse! The sneak peek was awesome, and sold me on the early access. Now all the physics are rubbish, the driving feels slow, and the performance is GARBAGE. The game doesn't even look good to justify the bad framerate (which appears to be random as some people report no issues, and others with better specs have an unplayable 10fps.)

Maybe the game will have a full release in the next few years, if you're lucky. Oh, wait. There's talk of bankruptcy - have a look at the forums.

Spend your money on something else. For the £25 they are (laughably) charging, there are so many other games you could buy!

They probably spent all of their resources making the engine. It is an impressive engine I guess, but I'd still rather play a game with a less impressive physics engine and tons of tracks and cars, and an actual career mode, than a game with kewl car crashes yo but only like ♥♥♥♥ing FIVE TRACKS, SIX CARS AND NO CAREER MODE.

"BUT IT'S STILL IN EARLY ACCESS!"

♥♥♥♥ you, it's been in early access for ♥♥♥♥ knows how long now, and it seems like it'll stay that way. Forever.

This is basically the DayZ of racing games. Actually, lemme take that back, this is the ♥♥♥♥ing WarZ of racing games.

Just buy Flatout 2 instead.

TL:DR - 8/10, the game has come a very long way, its a solid arcadey simulation with a lot of fun to be had on multiplayer, worth it for anyone to check out, especially when its on sale.

Do you remember Destruction Derby for the Playstation One? I do, and I freaking loved it. Sadly that game would be absolutely unbearable nowadays. Thats where Wreckfest comes in.

The great thing about Wreckfest is that it isnt just Derby. There are circuit tracks on tarmac, and gravel. You have a small variety of cars to choose from and with recent updates there is a progression system so you can finally start from the bottom and work your way up.

Now, Wreckfest wasn't always as good, and wasn't always recieving updates as frequently as it is now. The good folks developing this gem have spent some time ironing out their version of car physics so that racing can be exciting and enjoyable for all car classes. The damage modeling they have done is great and its extremely satisfying to see your car get wrecked up during semi-clean contact racing.

This game has come a long way and the developers truly appear committed to completing this game and having it stand on its own in a sea of racing sims. A racing sim you will not find here. This is an arcade style simulation with the flavour of real physics behind it. You can enjoy it with wheel, a controller, or even a keyboard and you will not feel at a disadvantage which to me is extremely important. Although with a wheel you could probably have a great deal of fun drifting through corners in their new Asian Drifter style car(kind of looks like an old skyline).

The absolutely best part of this game though has got to be its Multiplayer. This game is like the DayZ of racing games when you are online, its just awesome. Most of the players that stick with this game prefer a Semi-Clean racing style, so you will enjoy the bump and grind of a derby, but against the backdrop of a circuit race. Its incredible how much fun you can have when you get a server full of people to race so clean no one is intentionally hitting, but everyone is trying to get in front and you have cars going 3 wide through corners without wrecking, but instead shoving and pushing each other out of the way as they jostle for that lead position.

...And then. You might join a server with no rules at all, and you'll be wiping the tears from your eyes because for the first time ever you're in first place, and then crunch! Both your front wheels are gone, your engine is bent in half and there is a smoldering wreck of a car from a player going backwards on the track, probably giggling and laughing hysterically in front of their screens as they watch 4 or 5 more cars plow into you, turning your car into a smoldering wreck aswell.

To each their own to be sure, but man the multiplayer can be wicked fun. I hope they make it so you can play the entire game progression wise on multiplayer. Right now you simply get all the cars for free but dont earn anything, and if you choose to race with a car you do own, you don't really earn enough for it to be worth while.

Anyways, thanks for reading, this game is an easy 8/10 as it is, because it really is that fun. I will climb to a solid 9/10 by the time all the content is in and they leave early access.

This is a good game, but I want to put a disclaimer up, the crash physics and car destructibility is better in BeamNG Drive. With that said, this game is a nice spiritual successor to Destruction Derby.

Great for online multiplayer with friends. This game is worth it just for the figure 8 racing.

For all the whiners about it being slow in development, who cares, it's early access and there's no other game out there like this.

I wouldn't recommend this game in its current state.

The engine seems well-crafted. The cars crumple and break down masterfully as they get hit. Unfortunately, the driver also gets squashed into weird shapes. At the moment there is no depth to the game and the scoring system can be weird at times. You get a free crew. You move them to any car at any time with no penalty. As you race, they get better (which allows them to fix an extra point of damage per go) and you get more money (which allow you to purchase better cars and better parts). Everything is available from the get-go and you can skip a lower tier (if one can call it that) car and/or part altogether and go straight for the last one from each region or group. From the first car with no upgrades to owning every car with all the upgrades took about two hours total. I even purchased two more crews at a grand each just so each of the three regions have their own crew. I don't even play the races as I didn't buy this game for that racing simulator experience ("Wreckfest", remember?). Though derby mode is a lot of fun, I often wonder why I didn't get a point for hitting another car hard or assisting in wrecking it. Especially when driving in a smaller (lighter) car, the damage you do to your opponent is often considered moot, even though there are clear signs that you made a fender or door cave in completely.

tldr; Give it a go if it's on sale and you really want to get that Early Access feel, otherwise wait and see if things change.
