Game looks OK and it plays ok, once you get a hold of controls setup ( i had a mouse issue). Gameplay looks fun and it can be quite scary at moments...
But, reason I can't recommend this game is A LOT of issues with running this game properly on PC. I have lost hours trying to find fixes for quite a lot of issues that I have with it, and I still haven't been able to fix them all; and most annoying issue is constant crashes. I'm at best, able to play game for 10-15 min before game crashes, and If I'm unlucky to be in section with rare save stations, I could happen that I have to replay same area multiple times before I manage to reach next save station without crash.
And at this point, I give up... I can't and won't waste any more time trying to fix what developers should have fixed.

I like a game where the challenge comes from the in-game enemies and not fighting with the controls. I was weirded-out for the first few minutes of Dead Space, since I'd never played anything like it before. The over-the-shoulder perspective, and Isaac's large size compared to many other controllable sprites, made me worry I'd be a clumsy oaf the entire game. But the first level is fantastically designed to give you time to get your bearings. By the time I started getting the hang of movement and shooting, the game started becoming more challenging, and the difficulty curve was very smooth the entire time. Movement was smooth too. I rarely got hung up on objects. The weapons didn't feel like they were lacking essential qualities before upgrading. I was rarely lost, and rarely unsure of what to do next. Also, it was rather a relief playing a game that doesn't pop up endless prompts of what each button does. I wish there was an option for certain other games to stop holding my hand like that.

Mt only complaints: 1. The Contact Beam is powerful, but so awkward to use I just sold it. 2. Sometimes it was a little irksome to open boxes or use the save station, because if you're standing just to the side of them they won't work. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

Loved the overall look of the game too. The Ishimura not only recalled the dirty, dark, industrial design of Aliens, but the game did a good job of making me feel like I was in an actual ship with physically-possible architecture. Dead Space puts a lot of effort into keeping you immersed, so the tension feels real and the scares are more effective when they come.

But most importantly of all, my new favorite thing to do in any video game ever is to fling Stasis at an enemy, then leisurely carve them up like an ice sculpture with my REMOTE CONTROLLED FLYING ****ING BUZZSAW BLADE. Oh god, the sound effects alone are pure joy.

*THE VERDICT IS CLEARLY OUTLINED BELOW*
Dark, gruesome and full of gory fun: "Dead Space" is an excellent horror game. While I don't think it's as scary as games like "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" or "Outlast", great lighting, eerie sound design and sick visuals (some of which are sure to permanently burn into your memory) make this a fairly terrifying adventure. In terms of gameplay "Dead Space" delivers a unique combat system that offers bonus damage when apendages such as arms and legs are dismembered. WIth all of the weirdly deformed monsters you'll fight along the way each encounter is about quick aim and creating space as your aggresors desprately try to violate your eyes with a gory death cutscene. While the combat is fun, it should be noted that there are some issues with the weapon balancing. While much of your aresnal is really cool, it will become quickly apparent that 2 or 3 weapons in particualr outshine the rest.

Verdict
"Dead Space" is a gory, dark and unforgettable experience with fun combat that pushes its ultra-violence over the top. However, the weapon balacing could use some work.

guys...what if the deadspace experience is all a dream? the delusions of the madman engineer isaac clarke, who killed half the crew of the ishimura blew up a mining complex killing thousands and was eventually captured. went to the insane asylum on the sprawl, managed to escape and begin killing again all while a riot was on. and his friend ellie is another crazy person who shares the same delusion and the other guy off the ishimura is thier hostage, they think he is the crazy guy with all the secrets and when he assaults ellie he is actually trying to run for his life? and when all that is done he escaped and was hiding out on a colony, when another "marker" appears he killed hundreds more again, those unitologists that were trying to capture him? nope they were the special forces sent in to kill isaac. carver and the other guy? paid mercenarys that were paid by ellie to bring isaac to saftey, isaac goes to the ice planet with the hope to destroy the planet and the moon killing everybody on the planet but are being chased by special forces, led by general Danik, the mercenarys dont mind at all as they are being paid billions, enough to retire. isaac and ellie rip one of the poor colonist apart and cut his limbs and then put him back together to figure secrets out. isaac manages to kill danik and severly kill the special forces morale most of them fleeing the planet, as isaac and carver killed most of them. isaac only manages to destroy the moon but the damage is done, without the moon the planet is plunged into chaos, carver does not survive the aftermath and most colonists are killed off in the various earthquakes and tsunamis, and isaac? he is stuck in a natural cave with no way out left wandering till he eventually dies. and then he wakes up,because it was all a dream, and dreams have no impact on reality, isaac prepares to board the ismimura to repair the "com arrays".........

I played this game a lot when it came out in 2008. It's the scariest game in the Dead Space series. The gameplay reminded me of Resident Evil 4, the sci-fi element and horror reminded me of System Shock. Though I could never really enjoy the story or the Dead Space world, I appreciated how much work went into expanding it (mini-games, movies and books). What I enjoyed most about this game is the complete lack of UI. Without the UI the whole experience feels more like watching a movie (found footage?). I think that this is one of those games that you just have to have in your Steam Library. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=710414302 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=710913128

I'm never touching this bloody game again. It made it hard to sleep for two nights because of how awesome/intense it is. You never get a break from the terror. You wanna walk around that corner? Make sure you're reloaded. You wanna open that door? Better aim and take a step back. Death can come from anywhere, and you're always low on health and ammo. It's not scary like typical horror games. It doesn't need jumpscares or anything like that. The incredible atmosphere of the game is enough to keep you terrified for the whole ride. I'm never touching this bloody game again.

Dead Space is in my top ten favorite games list. I love all of the Dead Space games, but something about the first one is just different. It's far scarier than the later games, too.

Even though the game is getting older now, and some of the texture don't look great anymore, I still give DS1 a thumbs up. For sure.

Yes, this game has weird mouse controls. Now, with all the negatives out of the way, this is hands down one of the greatest survival horror games out there -- that is, if you play it on Hard or higher (a strange bug causing your game to suddenly switch difficulty from Hard to Normal has however yet not been resolved and never will be). Love atmospheric survival horror but feel like being unable to defend yourself is not fun? Dead Space has you covered -- in layers of blood. Yes, one or two well placed shots to limbs (great system, headshots make no sense here anyway) can disarm (har har) the enemy, but the same pretty much applies to you -- ignore an enemy and say goodbye to half of your medpacks.
Yes, this game utilizes jumpscares. A lot. But it also loves to fake them with long build-ups that result in a vent cover simply falling off. Together with DS2, this is THE survival horror series of our time. And yes, DS2 has superior gameplay, but it lacks the Alien-like atmosphere of this one. And DS3 lacks the ability to let your wallet intact (don't bother).

Do you like space? Do you like zombies? Do you like fighting through wave after wave of faceless, terrifying enemies? If so, this game is a must!

Story: 9/10 As Isaac Clark, you get plunged into a desperate struggle for survival as you try to find a way off of the USG Ishimura, a deep-space mining ship that becomes infected with an alien parasite that turns corpses into vicious, mindless zombie things called Necromorphs. You must fight your way through the ship, repairing key systems and unravelling the mysteries of the ship's mission. The tory does a great job of keeping the tone of the game consistent throughout. The whole time, you are seemingly one step behind, as you desperatley try to repair life support systems, engines, etc. The problem I have with the story is the plot twist at the end, which I won't spoil.

Gameplay: 9/10 This game has one of the most creative combat systems I've come across in my many years of gaming. It is, at its core, a third-person shooter, but not like the Mass Effect series where you run around guns ablaze. To kill the necromorph enemies, you have to dismember them with your improvised weapons made from engineering tools. You have to use your environment to your advantage. The weapon upgrade system is very simple, yet rewarding. As the game progresses, the enemies become more challenging to defeat, and require different strategies and weapons to beat. Also, this game does a great job, in my opinion, of making boss battles. They are simple and not too challenging (at least at easy difficulties), but I can't think of many modern games with actual boss battles. Pretty much every level ends with one. You also have at your disposal a stasis tool that sets anything it hits, wether it's an enemy or malfuntioning door, into slow-motion. You also have a kinesis tool that allows you to grab things from afar and throw them. You will have to use these things in conjunction to solve puzzles.

Setting: 9/10 The USG Ishimura gets a little boring after a few levels, as everything kind of looks the same. That being said, I'm a sucker for scientifically accurate space games. Upon entering the vaccuum of space, you loose sound for the most part. There are many places of zero-gravity, where you get to float around in dissorienting fashion. The ship is creepy and almost archaic-looking, which fits the tone of the game very well. The game has a few moments of horror, especially at the begining. You pick up voice and text logs throughout the game, which add depth to the story.

Overall, I really enjoy this game. It also has some nice replay value as it allows you to keep all of your weapons, with their upgrades, and your suit when you start a new game. The story is also pretty fun the second time around because of the several plot twists you know about from the first play through. The best thing about this game is the atmosphere it creates when you play it. If you aren't playing with all of the lights turned off with sound-cancelling headphones, you aren't playing it right!
