What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The American War began development with a team of two. Following the departure of the other team member, I am now continuing development solo at Posh Toffee Games. Early Access allows players to experience the game and provide feedback as I continue refining it. ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Development has taken longer than originally anticipated, and the previous estimate of around 12 months is no longer accurate. With development now handled by one person, the schedule needs to reflect that smaller capacity. The campaign now contains nine missions, bringing it closer to the planned ten-mission scope. Please purchase based on the game’s current content rather than anticipated future updates. ”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The plan for the full version is to expand the campaign from the current nine missions to ten, further develop the museum and its unlockable historical content, and refine combat and comic-book storytelling. These are development goals rather than guaranteed additions, and the final scope may change. ”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of The American War now contains nine missions, alongside a prologue with comic-book cutscenes. A museum lets players unlock historical information about the Vietnam conflict as they progress through the campaign. Online PvP multiplayer is also available. ”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be sold at a reduced price during its Early Access phase as our fans and community's input is invaluable to us and we understand that as a customer you would not like to pay full price for an unfinished product.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Players can share feedback, suggestions and bug reports through the Steam discussion boards and our Discord. I manage this feedback directly alongside development, using it to help identify issues and prioritise improvements. As a solo developer, I may not be able to respond immediately or implement every suggestion. ”

About This Game

The American War is an old-school first-person shooter set during the Vietnam War, combining combat, psychological horror and comic-book storytelling. Experience a US veteran’s fractured account of the conflict, where trauma and military-prescribed stimulants blur the line between reality and nightmare.

Fight through a fractured memory

Take on an old-school shooting campaign told through a veteran’s unreliable recollections. Comic-book panels connect the action with his account of the horrors of combat and the conflict’s lesser-known ramifications.

An edge in combat — at a cost

Use stimulants to recover health and gain an edge in combat, while their effects blur the boundary between the battlefield and disturbing visions.

Uncover the history behind the conflict

Find collectables throughout the levels to unlock historical information in the museum, connecting what you encounter in the campaign with the wider Vietnam conflict.

Features

  • An old-school single-player FPS campaign set during the Vietnam War.
  • Psychological horror and an unreliable veteran’s perspective.
  • Comic-book storytelling between the action.
  • Stimulants that restore health and distort your perception.
  • Collectables that unlock historical information in the museum.
  • Online PvP multiplayer alongside the single-player campaign.

Development Update

The American War began development with a team of two. After the other team member left, I am now continuing development as a solo developer at Posh Toffee Games. Development has taken longer than the original Early Access estimate of around 12 months. Please base your purchase on the game available today rather than on planned additions.

AI Development Note

As a solo developer, I use AI tools to help with coding and troubleshooting, allowing me to make the most of my development time. No generative AI is used to create the game’s artwork, graphical assets, UI, animation or music, and no AI was used to make gameplay decisions.
