Another month of Steam releases is in the books, so with this post we're excited to announce the Top Releases of September. As with past months, this list highlights the top 20 products released in September, measured by revenue generated during the first two weeks following release. We’re also showcasing the top 5 free-to-play products, measured by unique player count following release.

More fun with friends

Steam's Top Release lists are typically full of multiplayer games, but September's list stood out for the co-op variety in particular. With most of the games this month offering multiplayer support, 13 of them include co-op specific modes. Now more than ever, players appreciate the ability to connect with friends to share in their favorite games together. From jumping online for quick round of PES 2021 or Unrailed!, to assembling friends for a weekend-long gaming marathon with Marvel's Avengers, September's list features co-op experiences of all sizes and varieties. Perhaps the most essential co-op experience comes with September's runaway horror hit, Phasmophobia, where having a friend to share in the frightening experience is practically a necessity. If you and your friends are looking for more unique co-op experiences, check out September's full list below, along with the massive list of games in Steam's Co-op Hub.

Classic franchises

September’s list also includes several highly anticipated installments from fan-favorite franchises. With almost half of the games this month being sequels or remasters, it was fun to pause and look back at some of the originals. The innovative dynasty simulator Crusader Kings was ahead of its time in 2004, but if you ask us, the newest version is the best yet. Then there’s Spelunky, which launched in 2008, influencing an entire generation of roguelike platformers. And how could we forget Serious Sam, which first invaded LAN parties nearly two decades ago. Ok, now we feel old.

Early Access completed

We'd also like to congratulate the developers and communities of Hades, Squad and Unrailed!. All three of these games made their successful version 1.0 launches in September after plenty of hard work and updates throughout Early Access. Their development stories are unique, but the theme is the same: the Early Access model creates a mutually beneficial relationship between players ready to jump in-game and developers eager to get feedback. Look no further than these community hubs to see how the dedication from players and developers made these 1.0 releases truly something to be celebrated.

New developers

Finally, it wouldn't be a Top Release list without congratulating the teams that are releasing a product on Steam for the first time. We're happy to welcome these eight teams to Steam: Álvaro García (binarynonsense), Awe Interactive, BlitWorks, Indoor Astronaut, Kinetic Games, Kongregate, Inc., Lyrical Games & Rhino Games, Inc.

Available now through Steam, Chat Filtering allows people to customize the language they see from others on the platform. The new Steam feature takes the chat filtering we built for games like CS:GO, Destiny 2, and Dota 2, and moves it into Steam for a customized experience that is consistent across supporting games, the Steam desktop client, web, and mobile chat experiences.

By default, strong profanity and slurs from people you don't know are now obscured in Steam Chat and supporting games. You can set your preferences to turn this off, or to control whether you want the default filters to also apply to chat messages from your Steam Friends. You can also select the type of language that is filtered. And because each player’s tolerance for difficult words is unique, we’ve included the ability to add or remove words to form your personal filter. You may also upload lists of words or phrases from other sources, enabling groups and communities to work together to define and share your own sets of language guidelines. We believe this level of control is especially important given that language is constantly evolving and is used differently among various communities around the world. With Steam chat filtering, we've made sure you can choose to filter language as much as you want, or not at all.

Read on for more background regarding these features.

Why filter chat on Steam?
Steam’s community of players engage with one another in games and online in all sorts of meaningful ways, whether in multiplayer matches, chat with Friends, group chats, or broadcasts. Most of the time, players' interactions are positive, friendships are formed, and everyone benefits from sharing our love of gaming with one another.

But some of the time, people have negative experiences on Steam due to their encounters with others whose tolerance for various forms of language differ from their own and in the worst case, bad actors. A playful match can quickly turn to a heated competition full of emotion and expression, some of which crosses a line. But where is that line? We've found the answer is different for everyone, and it even depends on who the difficult language is coming from.

How can we help players protect themselves from encountering online behavior which makes them feel uncomfortable, or worse? Steam’s parental controls can help players remain safe with adult supervision. But those of us who go online without these features in place join a world that is just like the real one, full of exposure that can result in experiences both positive and negative.

For those of you who engage with Steam online, we have invested in systems for store and community content moderation, which are enabled by default. Content available on our store is reviewed for accuracy in reporting titles of various ratings. Profane and hateful language are obscured in forums, user reviews, and user comments. Potentially inappropriate imagery posted to the Steam Community is blurred preemptively by default, when detected by image recognition or reported by users. Reports of abusive users are moderated and resolved, as appropriate.

While we continue to develop longer-term solutions in this space, Steam users are in search of ways to specify their own tolerance in the face of online communication which crosses their personal line. So we have built a simple system to filter strong profanity and slurs in chat.

What will I experience with Steam chat filtering enabled?
Any commonly used strong profanity and slurs will be obscured when sent from people you don't know via chat. These words will be replaced with symbols. By default, Friends’ chat text remains unfiltered, though users may indicate they wish it to be included.

Note that our filtering does not catch all profanity and slurs. If you see a word you wish you hadn’t in chat, adding it to your custom filtered list will help us improve our filtering for all Steam users while immediately updating your own experience to avoid seeing that word again.

Also note that the user who enters any of your filtered words will see exactly what they’ve typed, even if they have filtering enabled themselves. Whether others see it too will depend upon whether they have filtering of these words enabled.

Now that you can identify these words in chat, why not ban them outright?
While we do ban profanity and slurs from being displayed in more public places like user reviews, comments, forums, and broadcasts on Steam, we do not want to outright block user text in chat, but rather, let users choose what they see from others.

We know marginalized groups can reclaim language for themselves, and we don’t want to stand in the way of them from doing so when chatting with one another on Steam. Additionally, feedback from our Labs experimentation corroborates that context matters, and that strong language is often received differently when shared among Friends. So players have an option to obscure profanity and slurs from their Steam Friends, but we’ve disabled this by default.

Where is this filtering applied?
* Steam Chat
* Chat in Supporting Games

What's on your filtered lists, and how did you decide?
We have two lists. The first consists of commonly used strong profanity, which players requested we separate in early development of these features. The second consists of commonly used slurs against various racial, religious, ethnic, and other identifying groups.

We built our English lists from a variety of sources, then searched for instances of them across a large sample of in-game chat. Based on this sample, we've found that by filtering variants of the top 5 most commonly used strongly profane or hateful words, we can eliminate about 75% of profanity and slurs used in chat. Over 56% of the instances of profanity or slurs found in our sample were a variant of f***. Another 10% of them were variants of s***. Another 10% were instances of potty-mouth schoolyard language we've chosen not to filter as strong profanity or slurs. The remaining 24% of the instances were strong profanity and slurs we found to be used commonly enough that we've also added them to our lists.

We will continue to refine these lists based on the words you choose to allow or block on Steam.

How can I customize my filters?
Visit Community Content Preferences in your Account Preferences. Here you can indicate your preferences for viewing difficult language, include messages from Steam Friends when filtering these things, and enter words to always or never filter, or upload lists to do the same.

F U Steam, how do I turn this thing off?
If you'd prefer to see strong profanity and slurs, you are free to disable some or all of these filters, or otherwise customize them as you see fit.

How did you decide this was a good idea?
We’ve created these features in response to user and partner requests, and worked to understand user response to them by first experimenting in Steam Labs. Now we’ve widened our audience to all Steam users, we'll continue to refine these features based on your feedback.

I'm a game developer. How can I leverage Steam chat filtering in my game?
Check out our Steamworks Chat Filtering API Documentation for information about how you can take advantage of Steam chat filtering in your game.

The first ever Steam Digital Tabletop Fest, celebrating games that cross between physical and digital, will make its debut October 21st thru 26th. Produced in collaboration with Auroch Digital, the event will feature virtual let’s plays, panels, talks and more streaming activities that explore the fusion between physical and digital games with legendary designers, upcoming studios, and you.

Working with Valve, indie studio Auroch Digital is helping curate the program of events and line up speakers such Sandy Petersen (Call of Cthulhu RPG, Quake, Cthulhu Wars and more!), Steve Jackson (Munchkin, Ogre, Car Wars and many more), Ian Livingstone (Co-founder of Games Workshop and Fighting Fantasy, Chairman Sumo Group plc), Elizabeth Hargrave (creator of the hit game Wingspan) and author and New Yorker writer Simon Parkin talks about how a board game helped the allies win WW2, among other topics.

Here’s a look at just some of the other wide-ranging activities happening during the event:
  • Plague Inc: Evolved - Where James Vaughan, game designer of the digital and physical version plays the digital game's boardgame scenario while discussing the design of both versions.
  • Othercide - The tactical-RPG blending strong art style, unique lore and challenging tactical gameplay, presented by its Art Director and Lead Game Designer.
  • Gloomhaven - llivestream, featuring the developers, will discuss the upcoming content for the next major update of Gloomhaven’s Early Access on Steam.

  • Virtual panel on Cthulhu games - Where some of the most notable Cthulhu-themed designers from digital and physical ask about the cultural impact of such titles and more.

Join in during the live broadcasts to chat to the devs about the topics of conversations and their games, or catch them via VOD if you can’t make the live steam. More panels and talks will be announced as the event gets closer.

The Steam Digital Tabletop Fest features games that run across the lines between digital and physical games; this can be a digital port of a physical game, a game which has produced a physical version from the digital one, a game that simulates the physical play experience, or a digital game whose aesthetics are inspired by tabletop games.

Returning to our monthly Top Release series, we're excited to unveil Steam's Top Releases for the month of August. Many games made their debuts, but this list highlights the 20 that rose to the top of the charts. Like with previous months, we establish the Top 20 by looking at revenue generated during the two weeks following each game's release. We are also highlighting the top 5 free-to-play games, established by the total number of unique players they acquired during launch.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

As we watch the Top Release lists fill out over the course of each month, it's always a fun surprise to see the different types of games players are enjoying. August saw that variety on a unique level, with an entire spectrum of transportation options finding success. Whether taking to the skies with Microsoft Flight Simulator, exploring rail networks around the world with Train Sim World® 2, getting into the driver seat with Project CARS 3, or ferrying across mystical seas in Spiritfarer®, August brought an unbelievable variety of vehicles. As the months roll on, we'll have to keep an eye on what new conveyance options become available on Steam.

Remote Play

We were struck by how many of August's Top Releases offer some level of Remote Play integration. The feature, which is available for about half of August's releases, allows games to be launched from a PC and then streamed and played on a number of supported devices. It's not uncommon these days for players to have several different portable tech devices, so it makes sense for developers to give players the freedom to enjoy their games from whatever device is appropriate for the moment. For some players, this means looting aliens in Risk of Rain 2 with a swipe on the tablet. For others, a phone might be the preferred device for knocking out friends in Fall Guys. If you enjoy the convenience of playing from a phone, the uniqueness of interacting with a tablet, or the comfort of sitting in front of the TV, be sure to check the Remote Play Hub, where you'll find thousands of games supporting Steam Remote Play.

Three of the games on August's list go a step further by offering Remote Play Together support. With this feature, Remote Play technology allows friends to connect to each other's sessions as if they were sitting in the same room. If you or a friend just purchased this month's hits, Captain Tsubasa, PGA TOUR 2K21, or Spiritfarer®, make sure to join a session and experience the timeless thrill of sitting together (virtually) to play some local multiplayer.

New to Steam

Finally, we'd like to congratulate and welcome the teams that are making a Top Release list with their first-ever launch on Steam. Congrats and welcome to DDNet Team, Eleon Game Studios, Gniller, Guerrilla, jacktostudios, KLab Inc., Panache Digital Games, PuffballsUnited, TAMSOFT CORPORATION, Thorium, https://store.steampowered.com/app/1194840/Frog_Fractions_Game_of_the_Decade_Edition/, and Wube Software Ltd.

July was a busy month for games launching on Steam, so we're presenting another exciting list of Top Releases. With this post, we'll be looking back at the top 20 products released in July, measured by revenue generated during the first two weeks following their release. As always, we will also be looking at the top 5 free-to-play releases, measured by their total unique player counts.

Controller or keyboard & mouse?

July's list features an impressive amount of games with added controller support. Of the Top Releases in July, an overwhelming 19 of them give players an alternative option to the traditional keyboard & mouse experience. Whether you're strapped in with an advanced force-feedback racing wheel for F1® 2020, or just plugging in your favorite console controller to relax on the couch with Destroy All Humans!, gone are the days of downloading added software or spending time configuring and calibrating your device. For players, it's pretty much as easy as making sure your favorite controller is charged up. For developers, it's become more and more important to consider Steam Input support as an avenue to reach a more diverse set of players. If you're the type of player who wants to delve into more games that support controllers, check out our Controller Friendly homepage for ideas.

Worldwide catalog

We've become accustomed to seeing a diverse representation of games and developers on each month's list, so it was no surprise to see that yet again in July, with games coming from nine different countries (check the list below for full country & developer details). No matter where players are plugged in, they are able to choose from games made all over the world. Developers have paid attention to that too, as most games now support a wide variety of localization options. July's Top Releases offered a huge amount of support in that regard, with games this month supporting an average of seven languages each. DEATH STRANDING takes the cake, with a whopping 20 supported languages, and 12 with full audio support.

New developer highlights

Finally, we'd like to highlight the 11 development teams who made this month's list with their first ever Steam release. Some of these developers have been making games for years on other teams or platforms, while some are making their first-ever game. Congrats and welcome to the following developers - we hope to see more amazing work from you in the future:  Catfood Studio, Cradle Games, Easy Day Studios Pty Ltd, Final Strike Games, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, Phobia Game Studio, Robot Squid, Spilt Milk Studios,
Thunkspace LLC, Veewo Games and 甘肃嘉元数字科技有限公司.

If you're curious about previous months, here are more Top Release lists:
Steam News - AndrewL

With the action-packed Steam Summer Sale drawing to a close, it’s a good time to take a look back at some of the awesome games released in June. The month was filled with exciting releases, but these are the Top 20 games that found the most success with players in June. As a reminder, we measure monthly Top Releases by looking at revenue generated during the first two weeks after launch. We're also showcasing the Top 5 free-to-play games released in June, measured by total unique players.

When the Top Release lists come together each month, we’re always curious to see what themes end up being shared among the top games. One theme that seems to appear nearly every month is the consistently high volume of Top Releases that utilize Steam’s Early Access (EA) model of development. June featured an EA trend of its own, but in quite a different way than in previous months.

Electronic Arts (EA) stormed the charts this month, racking up eight of the Top 20 New Releases for June (Battlefield™ V, Command & Conquer™ Remastered Collection, Crysis® 3, Dragon Age™ Inquisition, Need for Speed™ Heat, The Sims™ 4, STAR WARS™ Battlefront™ II, and Titanfall® 2). EA’s developer list for these titles reads like of a who’s who of game studios, with DICE, Maxis, BioWare, Crytek and Respawn all making appearances on June’s Top 20. No one can be sure what games will end up on future lists, but with EA already announcing several upcoming titles, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them here again.

Along with EA’s huge showing in June, developer Quantic Dream also claimed two spots this month with their story-driven hits, Detroit: Become Human and Beyond: Two Souls. June also saw the Steam debuts of two incredibly popular franchises as fans all over the world rejoiced in the arrival of both SpongeBob SquarePants & Megami Tensei. Traditionally, you’d see a batch of big name releases like this during a holiday season. But the old notion of seasonality is becoming more and more out of date. No matter the weather outside or the day of the week - it’s always a good time to find your favorite Top Release on Steam.
