Swarmlake Update 16

Hey all,

Update 16 adds an in-game leaderboard, increases performance by ~100% and improves balance, visibility, presentation and more:
  • Added in-game leaderboard showing 20 global entries around the player
  • Added visual bomb enemy outline
  • Increased CPU performance by ~100%
  • Decreased game over slomo by 50%
  • Improved charger enemy movement by only moving horizontally
  • Improved base font
  • Improved visual game over killer enemy highlight
  • Improved teaching bomb enemy on game start
  • Fixed mid-air burst jump height aim angle consistency
  • Fixed charger enemy velocity after bouncing off the floor
  • Fixed avoider enemy avoiding projectiles on the other side of the arena in rare cases
  • Fixed player rotation when restarting on first frame when restart button becomes visible
  • Fixed theoretically possible crash on startup when all achievements were achieved
  • Updated controller mappings
  • Removed highscore and game over symbols
  • Reset leaderboard
Based on new findings from my bachelor's thesis about game optimization I was able to approximately double the CPU performance of Swarmlake which was already very optimized before. On the maximum supported enemy count of 20,000, which is much higher than players will ever be able to survive, the frame time (CPU + GPU) went from about ~12ms (~80fps) to ~6.2ms (~160fps) on a low- to mid-range machine (i5-4570 + GTX 1050).

Additionally, an in-game leaderboard was added which shows 20 global entries around the player. Seeing your own name on a leaderboard among other players should feel better than merely displaying the number of your global rank like before.

Finally, the charger enemy movement was simplified to only move horizontally, except for avoiding other charger enemies, which should make them more predictable, less likely to clump together and most importantly force players to be more reactive and adaptive with their movement. This will reset the leaderboard, and I am sorry for any inconveniences this may cause.

Thank you

Swarmlake Update 15

Hi all,

Update 15 improves the experience based on player feedback:
  • Increased score-based enemy spawn amount by 17%
  • Reverted burst shoot interval changes of Update 12
  • Tweaked burst shoot gun recoil animation speed
  • Fixed gun idle animation
  • Fixed window DPI issues
  • Fixed massive score exploit due to burst shoot interval change
  • Removed burst shoot music audio ducking
  • Reset leaderboard

Due to player feedback the burst shoot interval changes of Update 12 were reverted as it made the experience less fun. To compensate the enemy spawn amount now ramps up quicker based on the score which further empowers aggressive and fun playstyles.

This will reset the leaderboard since the community has expressed their wish for leaderboard resets on balance changes and I am sorry for any inconveniences this may cause.

Swarmlake is the only game where you can carve through 10,000+ enemies with your gun, soar through the sky by shotgun-jumping off of the floor or enemies mid-air, collide with bombs to take out huge junks of the swarm and collect thousands of dropped shards to beat your last highscore. Featuring an original electronic soundtrack being visualized on the infinitely expanding and pulsating lake, Swarmlake is only made possible with the handcrafted custom-made engine.

Additionally over the past six months lots of community-requested features and improvements were added to increase the overall value of Swarmlake including better balance, visuals, music-visualization, even more intense and fun gameplay, a persistent leaderboard, Steam trading cards, full controller support, rebindable keybindings and more. Therefore the price was adapted and a new trailer created to reflect the current state of Swarmlake:
Thank you to everyone that has supported the game during the months after release since your feedback was essential for shaping up Swarmlake!
