What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are creating a game we always wanted to play.
Being both game developers and players, we know that strategy gamers are an active and dedicated but also very demanding community. The game we are working on is based on fresh ideas and unique game mechanics. We believe that making Driftland: The Magic Revival available at this stage of production will allow us to gather feedback from enthusiasts of the genre and achieve the expected quality. Players’ support and participation in the development process is an invaluable help, especially to a small studio like ours.

Join us to dive into the world of Driftland, test innovative game mechanics and help to create a truly unique strategy game!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We estimate the duration of Early Access for about a year. It is the time that we have planned to complete the game development, but as we want players and their feedback to have an important impact on the decision to move to the final version of the game, the time may be reasonably longer.

During the entire Early Access, we will keep you informed and provide you with regular updates, so you will always know at what stage of our development plan we currently are.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Two playable races and procedurally generated maps versus AI (including hostile Barbarians) will be available from the very launch of Early Access. (Edit: four races are already available)
For months to come, the game will undergo many changes. We are going to continue working on features that will be available from the beginning and add new ones. In addition to many minor features, the main elements to be added are:
  • grouping of warriors in the camps
  • multiplayer mode
  • four intertwining campaigns (one for each race)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is currently a playable alpha version. Our Early Access players will have a choice of four races with their buildings and upgrades, procedurally generated single player maps to exlore, hostile barbarians, and wild beasts to fight and tame.
The current version of this mode is ready for playtesting, should be pleasant but challenging. Bugs should not be excessive nuisance, but of course can happen. Additional features, tweaks, bug fixes and game modes will follow soon.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. One of the advantages of participating in Driftland’s Early Access is getting the game at a significantly lowered price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“It’s important for us to have as close contact with our players as possible. We will be at the players’ disposal on social media (like Facebook or Instagram) and want to regularly talk with our community on Reddit and Steam forums.”

Update Notes 0.7.76

Dust from the 0.7.x release has settled quite a long time ago and today's update closes this chapter of Driftland's Early Access. The next update (0.8.x) will welcome us with the first campaign and quite quickly give way to 0.9.x, which will enrich the game with a multiplayer mode :steamhappy:

But wait! Maybe let's focus some more on here and now.
In this update, we've developed AI, improved a lot of mechanics, and fixed some bugs.

Here are the full details:

AI updates:
  • AI expands the attack area into the enemy's empire
  • AI empire more effectively uses spells, eg Heal, Freeze
  • AI interrupt the attack if it incurs too much loss
  • AI manages resources trying to rationally plan expenses and saves adequate resources to build desired structures
  • if necessary, AI tries to evacuate units from the enemy's territory with portals
  • AI joins the islands to obtain treasures
  • AI tuning and minor fixes

UI updates:
  • a modifiable list of units in the raid flag window
  • correction of trimmed texts
  • the number of units in the camp has been added in the map view
  • new info messages added to the event log
  • nests added to the event log
  • buildings have the depletion of the resource information instead of simple "building has been destroyed"
  • the name of the newly discovered empire in the event log
  • further cleaning of the event log and deletion of duplicated information
  • minor UI fixes

Bug fixes:
  • rare "freeze" bug fixed
  • memory leaks fixed (could cause slowdowns or even an infamous "fatal error")
  • bugs reported by community :steamhappy: fixed
  • minor bugs fixed

May your lands remain unshattered,

Patch Notes 0.7.66

Greetings fellow Mages!

We’ve rolled out a small but significant patch that most of all fixes the bugs reported by our great community. Here are the full details:

Bug Fixes
  • Fatal Errors - We've made a lot of bug fixes including all of the ones you sent us. Many of them were rare but critical and ended the game with the infamous Fatal Error message.
We are counting on you that you will not stop sending us bugs if you come across any, and once again thank you for your help!
  • synchronous flying units - we fixed the bug sometimes causing flying units to fly in a synchronized manner
  • minor event log errors - bug fixes and streamlining of messages displayed in the event log on the right side of the screen

New Features
  • raid from the camp - a new button in the camp window that allows you to initiate a raid from this camp

  • camera tracking the unit - the camera follows the unit selected from the upper left list of units menu or event log or from the magic sphere if it appears there
  • AI improvements - minor AI improvements including better money and bridges management. Further AI improvements are on the way.

Meanwhile, I'm going back to work on the campaign, and in the breaks for multiplayer game tests ;-)

May your lands remain unshattered,

About This Game

After a devastating war between ancient mages, a powerful spell is all that holds together the shattered planet of Driftland. Faced with the destruction of their entire civilization and life on the planet, the warring factions called a truce and tried to repair the damage – but it was already too late. By using all their remaining magic to cast a powerful spell, they managed to keep their world in relative balance.

Many dark ages passed, but when all seemed lost, a ray of hope emerged once more: new sources of magic appeared, and new mages were given birth to across the planet. Now, as the dormant conflicts once again surface, this rediscovered power will determine whether Driftland is restored to its former glory or wiped from the cosmos entirely.

You take on the role of a Mage Overlord with your own castle, tower, and a small realm on one of the landmasses. With your unique powers, you can explore a procedurally generated world and connect floating lands to expand your kingdom.

Gameplay focuses on setting general goals for all your units without the need to micromanage each of them. The warriors, archers, and mages under your command are able to tame and ride different kinds of flying beasts and create various aerial units.

  • Procedurally generated world
  • Resource- and magic-based economy
  • Move and terraform scattered landmasses with magic
  • Tame and ride dragons and other creatures
  • Explore and fight on the same map
  • Set goals instead of directly controlling units
  • Single player, campaign**, and multiplayer**

** Will be added during Early Access development
