What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“For the final steps of polishing and balancing a multiplayer game, nothing substitutes for hearing about the experiences of actual players. We have already seen how valuable player feedback can be during the development of Verdun, so we wanted to do the same again to make the full version of Tannenberg the best it can be.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Tannenberg will leave Early Access on February 13 2019.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have an updated new user interface, sound improvements, performance and balancing optimizations, more countries represented and the ability to switch in-game between the games Verdun and Tannenberg.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is currently feature complete and fully playable. The open beta period will be used to implement a new user interface, and for improving sounds, balance, performance, and general polish.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will reflect the development progress of the game, and so may increase as new features and content are added. Check out our roadmap to see the plans.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community can provide feedback in many ways, including our Steam Hub and our Discord channel. We will also be issuing questionnaires to collect more specific feedback from players.”

FRONTLINE NEWS: Looking back on 2018, and forward to 2019!

Welcome to the first Frontline News of the new year! We’re going to start by taking a look back on everything which has happened over 2018, and then see what’s coming up in 2019.

2018 in Summary
We started the year of 2018 by merging the code bases for Verdun and Tannenberg. Although there were a few challenges at first, it set the stage for some big graphical upgrade for Verdun and shared progress for both games.
In April players voted on whether they wanted to see Romanian or Bulgarian troops next. It was a close run thing, but the Romanians just won out in the end. By the end of May the Romanians were ready to join the fighting, and they brought the new Mount Cosna map with them!

Last year's April Fools joke was taking a gentle dig at the Battle Royale craze. Battle Royal: Northern Front would have featured booty crates, jetpacks, and more wild stuff…

The focus was on performance through to September, with a ton of things fixed or tweaked and a big networking update released. As well as general improvements, particular attention was paid to the movement of other players so that they would move smoothly even when experiencing moments of substantial lag. Meanwhile in Verdun the first new squad on the roadmap was released: the ANZACs!

In November we implemented the first version of a new user interface in Tannenberg, revamping everything from the menus to the in-game maps and command wheels. It's still work-in-progress and we have more improvements planned before full release! Once everything is smoothed out, it will be put in Verdun too. The trailer below shows off the changes:

In October we updated and improved many of the sound effects in the game, and added a new prestige system allowing veteran players to gain prestige ranks in exchange for resetting their level to one and starting over. Here’s a video demonstrating a few of the new sounds that were added:

It was a special Armistice Day last year, being the 100th anniversary of the day the fighting ended. We posted short stories about 100 people who were killed in the fighting or otherwise died as a consequence of the war.

Looking forward to 2019 and the Tannenberg release!
We also announced that Tannenberg will be released on February 13th, 2019 - and that players could expect a surprise to arrive at launch... we're tight-lipped about details for now, but it's less than two months away now!

The trailer for that also teased the Bulgarians who will be arriving with the release. Bonus points to the keen eyed fans who got the movie reference! Check it out:

Here’s a newer teaser image… can you identify the gun?

We will finalize the UI in Tannenberg, release a tutorial, and apply more polish in the upcoming months.

Game Update: map voting, forgiving barbed wire and more

We have released a new update for Tannenberg bringing a number of improvements to the UI, along with some gameplay changes, bot improvements and a new feature!

Map voting
Tannenberg will from now on feature a map voting system, allowing you to vote after a match ends where to fight next!

Example of a map vote

Barbed Wire Rework
From now on barbed wire will no longer kill you! Barbed wire will be an obstacle that can reduce your health and stamina while limiting your movement speed, making you a sitting duck if you get caught up for too long without killing you.

UI improvements
First off, thank you for all the feedback given on the new UI! We have made several fixes to the (localization) text overlaps, made sure that avatar images show up on all occasions, fixed a few hud elements and more.

Other notable fixes in this update are:
  • Fixed FPS counter not updating
  • Fixed bots being able to walk into forbidden sectors
  • Improvements to spawning; the HQ and sectors, when contested, are not spawnable anymore

You can read the full changelog for more details.

Verdun Free Expansion

We have also released a huge update for Verdun today! Along with the new 64 player Frontlines mode, there is the new map set on the St. Mihiel Salient, the Tirailleurs Sénégalese squad, new weapons, plus many other gameplay improvements.

Tirailleurs Sénégalese ready to fight.

“An eye for detail and an obsession with authenticity, if not complete accuracy, is possibly even more important in Tannenberg than it was in Verdun.”
Fraser Brown (Rock Paper Shotgun)

About This Game

Tannenberg is the latest entry in the WW1 Game Series that started with FPS Verdun, expanding the focus to encompass the Eastern Front. Warfare between the Russian Empire and the Central Powers offers a fresh experience for new and veteran players alike, with five squads, 25+ weapons, five open maps that give players tactical freedom, and a 64 player game mode with full AI bot support so you can experience epic battles at any time!

This historical game takes place across the lakes, forests, and snowy plains of the Eastern Front - it was inspired by the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914, one of the most iconic encirclement battles in history. Players will be able to master a range of entirely new equipment brought to the field by Russian ‘Frontovik’ and ‘Cossack’ squads, the ‘Roumanian Infantry’, or join the Central Powers to serve in an Austro-Hungarian ‘K.u.K.’ squad, German ‘Infanterie’, and soon the Bulgarians. Tannenberg offers a range of game modes - including the exciting new Maneuver game mode reflecting the different nature of war on the Eastern Front, as 64 players battle across large maps where the objectives and battle lines are always shifting. There is a wealth of historical detail including realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, horrendous gore, and maps based on real battlefields, this time in the forests, plains and mountains of East Germany, Roumania and Russia.

Tannenberg key features include:
  • Authentic WW1 atmosphere; accuracy in everything from maps and weaponry to uniforms
  • Tactical squad-based FPS; play as Russian, Roumanian, Austro-Hungarian, German and soon Bulgarian troops
  • Majestic Eastern Front; large maps each with weather variants from snow to summer sun
  • 64 player Maneuver game mode; capture strategic sectors in grand battles of movement
  • Never fight alone; AI bots for Maneuver so you can join epic battles at any time

WW1 on the Eastern Front
It’s all-out war on the Eastern Front! From artillery barrages and poison gas to the deadly heavy machine gun and hard-hitting rifle, there are many weapons to master. The battlefield is a dangerous place, and a little thought will help you stay alive – lead your shots, keep your eyes open, and be ready to engage in ferocious close combat at any moment.

Tannenberg’s Maneuver game mode captures the essence of warfare on the Eastern Front, with 64 players, large open maps, and the freedom to choose which sectors you will attack and defend. Just make sure you don’t get outflanked and encircled before you can do the same to your enemies!

Authentic World War 1 Setting
The WW1 Game Series currently includes Tannenberg and Verdun (set on the Western Front). These authentic WW1 shooters let players choose from a range of squads from across the war, as they fight for control of the ever-changing frontlines.

The development team is aiming to recreate the atmosphere of the Eastern Front with the same level of accuracy as seen in Verdun. Extensive research has been conducted, with uniforms recreated to the tiniest detail and weapons modelled to exact references. The maps use realistic props and terrain layouts based on locations from the hilly forests of Galicia to a Polish village subjected to scorched earth tactics.
