About This Game

Looks cute. Isn't.

Bad Beans is a deathrun party game about adorable little beans and the horrible, horrible things that happen to them.

Every round, one player is the Bad Bean. They sprint along a balcony beside the course and slam big red buttons that fire the traps below. Everyone else runs. The beans who reach the finish win. The rest become scenery.

Run for your life (and your limbs)

  • Jump, hop and dive. Hold jump for a full jump, tap it for a hop, or belly-flop forward and hope.
  • Hug your friends. Grab the bean in front of you and it slows right down, dragging you along. They have to mash jump to get free.
  • Shove. Run into other beans to push them out of your way. Friendship is a resource.
  • The floor is lying. Some tiles are fake, and the lies move every round. Only the Bad Bean sees them clearly. Runners get a faint shimmer, if they stop to look.
  • Revenge. Made it to the finish? Hit the Revenge Button and the Bad Bean's balcony collapses, with the Bad Bean on it.

49 traps. Ten horrible ways to die.

Trapdoors, crushers, axe pendulums, a crumbling bridge over lava, avalanches, a freeze ray, laser fences, a shredder floor, falling chandeliers and pianos, a toy train, wind-up chattering teeth, giant whack-a-mole mallets, a carousel that will not stop, and a boulder called Gerald.

Beans get squished flat, sliced in half, impaled, toasted, zapped to a skeleton flash, blown to chunks and dragged under the floorboards. Some traps only take an arm or a leg: you hop or crawl on, a bone sticking out, and bleed out in 30 seconds unless you reach the finish. Bodies stay where they fall until the round ends. So does the blood. You will leave footprints in it.

Being the Bad Bean

  • Time your buttons to catch the whole pack at once.
  • Bluff: flash the warning lamp and fire nothing. Watch them flinch.
  • Chain kills into combos: DOUBLE TROUBLE, TRIPLE THREAT, MEGA MEAN, TRAP LORD.
  • Press too much, too fast and you overheat: every button locks for 4 seconds and the runners get away.

Seven maps

  • Sugar Rush Factory: trapdoors, crushers, taffy pullers, cookie cutters and Gerald the boulder.
  • Temple of Nope: ancient, sacred, on fire. Fall off and you land in lava.
  • Cold Feet Peaks: icicles, avalanches, a snowplow, a freeze ray and an ice floe that tips you off.
  • Glitch City: zap floors, saw tracks, laser fences, hunting drones and the Conveyor of Doom.
  • Manor of Mistakes: chandeliers, a guillotine, falling pianos, haunted armour and hands under the floorboards.
  • Toy Box Terror: a giant bedroom with a toy train, jack-in-the-boxes and chattering teeth.
  • Carnival of Carnage: whack-a-mole, bumper cars and a carousel. Step right up. Stay forever.

Party on

  • Online: host a game on Steam and invite friends from the Steam overlay, or join one from the list. Up to 8 beans. Bots fill the empty seats and take over when someone leaves.
  • Solo: you and six bots, including Sir Trips-a-Lot, Big Steve and Kevin. You are the Bad Bean every third round, or whenever you volunteer.
  • Mutators shake up the later rounds on a map: Moon Bounce, Googly Eyes, Buttered Floors, Speed Demons and Tiny Beans.
  • Main Character Mode: the last bean standing gets a speed boost, a slow-motion moment and everyone's full attention.
  • Dead? Spectate the survivors and judge their choices. Every round's clock is under two minutes.
  • Graphics presets from LOW to EPIC. The game benchmarks your PC on first launch and picks one for you.

Dress for the funeral

Make your bean yours: 24 colours (8 of them special skins like Galaxy, Hologram and Lava Lamp), 21 eyes, 18 mouths, 24 hats and 18 outfits, from capes and scarves to wings and a turtle shell.

Every round pays coins for your score. Spend them in the shop on new looks and emotes (10 emotes in all, from Dance to Play Dead). No microtransactions: every coin is earned by running, dying and pressing buttons.

Fair warning

Bad Beans contains frequent cartoon gore. It is not for small beans.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Bad Beans was made by its developer working with an AI coding assistant (Anthropic's Claude). The game's code was written with heavy AI assistance, and that code builds almost everything you see and hear in the game: the 3D models of the beans, traps and levels, the level layouts, the materials, the sound effects, the menus and the in-game text such as trap names and death messages. The developer directed the work and play-tested the game. The music was created with an AI music generator. The studio logo shown at launch was also designed with the AI assistant. Nothing in the game is generated by AI while you play.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Bad Beans is a cartoon party game with frequent, exaggerated gore. Cute bean characters are squished, sliced in half, impaled, burned, electrocuted, blown to pieces and dragged under the floor by traps, with lots of blood that pools and stays on the course until the round ends. Some traps tear off an arm or a leg, and the bean keeps going until it bleeds out. There is no sexual content or nudity.
