About This Game

A terrarium that lives on your desktop

Monstarium sits along the bottom of your screen, on top of your other windows, and stays out of the way. Clicks go straight through to whatever is behind it. Only the monsters themselves catch your mouse.

They don't stay put

Monsters wander off the strip and climb on top of your open windows. Move a window and they tumble back down.

Hatch, merge, evolve

Buy an egg, wait a minute, meet someone new. Drag a monster onto its twin and the two become something bigger. There are 37 evolution lines, 95 forms and 5 biomes to open, with new species turning up every day of your first week.

Collect every look

Each form comes in 4 colors and 6 rare variants: crystal, autumn, spotted, starry, rainbow and one that belongs to its biome. Rebirth a biome and its forms unlock a golden look too. That adds up to over 1,000 looks. A built-in guarantee means you are never stuck hunting the last one forever.

They have a life of their own

  • Pet them, drop a treat and watch the race, or throw the ball around.
  • Monsters that play together become best friends.
  • Grant their little wishes and they earn stars of affection.
  • Open a monster's diary, give it a name, or take it for a walk on a leash.
  • Dress them up with 17 hats. Some you buy, others only come with an achievement.
  • Send a team from the box on an expedition and see what they bring back.
  • Birthday hats, Christmas caps, real seasons, a rare golden visitor, hide and seek, and a few secrets.

Idle for real

Nobody starves and nobody dies. Nothing piles up while you are busy. Leave it alone for a week and your monsters are still there, glad to see you.

A companion for work and study

Pick a favorite to live in the corner of your screen. Feed it, play with it, and it keeps you company: it reminds you to drink water, naps through your focus sessions and cheers when you finish. It never gets sick. It just misses you. If you like, hide the strip and keep only your companion.

Focus with them

Set a focus timer from 15 to 90 minutes and keep a short to-do list next to it. Monstarium counts your focus minutes for the day and the week, and when you finish a task a monster cheers. Mix rain, fireplace, birds, stream, night and ocean sounds at whatever volume helps you work.

Made for the background

Monstarium earns coins while it is closed and goes to sleep when you step away. On our test PC it uses about 1% of the CPU, and a low-power mode cuts that further on laptops. It never reads your keyboard or what you type in other programs, and there is no store inside the game: buy it once and everything is yours.

For streamers

A green screen mode for OBS and an optional Twitch hookup. Viewers type !monster and a name in chat to name one of your monsters.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The monster sprites and their animation frames were generated with an AI tool (PixelLab) from our own written descriptions. Every monster was then picked, cleaned up and recoloured by us, and part of the animation (wings, breathing, walk timing) is done in code. The in-game text was written by us in Portuguese and English and translated into the other languages with AI assistance. Store page text was drafted with AI assistance and edited by us. Scenery, interface art and music are not AI generated.
