A cute block hero, dragged down through a grim voxel dungeon. Souls-like combat: read the glint, then parry, clash or roll. At every stair, a gate of flowers or a gate of thorns: mow down a horde in the open, or duel champions in the dark. Your loot is your build. Death is permanent.

About This Game

He would rather stay in his chair.

Doomy Downer is a top-down action-roguelike in a lit voxel world. A small, cute block hero is hauled out of his armchair and sent down, floor by floor, through rot, bone, drowned halls and fire. The world is grim. He is adorable. He doesn't get a say in going down, only in how.

Combat you can read

  • The glint. In the last instant of every enemy windup, a glint flashes. Gold: strike into it for a CLASH, or raise your guard to parry (projectiles bounce back). Red: it can't be countered. Roll.
  • Stamina decides. Swings, blocks and rolls all spend it. Empty the tank and you're winded: crouched, able only to block and shuffle until you catch your breath.
  • Blows land when the blade arrives, not when you press the button. Every hit crunches.
  • Poise and stagger. Break an enemy's poise and it reels, taking double damage.
  • Perfect dodges slow time. Only two enemies commit to an attack at once; the rest circle and wait.

A gate of flowers, a gate of thorns

At every stair, two gates wait over the void: an arch of blooms and butterflies, and a black arch strangled by thorns between roaring braziers. Nothing tells you which to take.

Through the flowers lie sunny meadows, woods and shores, and a horde of oddly cute things that keeps streaming in. Mow them down, vacuum up their souls, and ride the massacre streak.

Through the thorns lie lava halls, desert canyons and misted crags. Fewer foes wait there, but every elite is a champion with named, telegraphed powers. Take them one duel at a time.

Floors flow into each other. The ground, the light and the weather change under your feet as you walk from one place into the next.

Every finished run leaves a statuette in the curio cabinet beside the armchair.

Your loot is your build

There are no skill trees. What you wear decides how you play.
  • Eight weapon classes with their own movesets: swords, axes, mauls, twin blades, spears, staves, bows and crossbows. Tap to combo. Hold to settle into a charge stance, then release a special art.
  • Magic comes only from rings. Each ring is a spell: Emberfall, Howling Nova, Blood Lance, Marrow Spikes, Grasp of the Drowned, Cinder Step, Rime Shards, Soul Siphon. No cooldowns, just cast time and mana.
  • Five rarities, including matching sets, with tiered affixes and rare greater rolls.
  • Affixes that change what attacks do: fire, cold, lightning, venom and void with their own effects, blade waves, shockwaves, ghost arrows, pierce, cleave, execute. Spells gain extra projectiles, echoes and area.
  • Eleven archetypes, from Bleed and Frost to Counter, Blood-price and Minion. Wear three or five pieces of one to wake its resonance. Some gear raises allies: a bone thrall, spectral blades, spirit wolves, a flame sprite.
  • Six legendary foes, one per place, each guarding a unique that drops nowhere else. Wear it with the right catalyst, feed it kills, and it evolves.
  • The Flesh Altar: reroll, temper, imprint and salvage your gear, paid in gold and in organs cut from your kills.

Carve them apart

Every creature is a jointed voxel puppet, and every joint can be cut. Killing blows sever limbs, and a crit can take an arm while its owner still lives. A disarmed archer can't shoot; a legless foe crawls after you.

Bosses have health on their limbs. Cut off the arm that throws the fire and the fire stops. Some bosses devour their own minions and grow new body parts from what they eat. Cut those off too.

Gore can be switched off in the pause menu.

No numbers

Your life is how full a pixel heart is, and your stamina is how fast it beats. Your mana is a cartoon eye whose lids close as it drains, and it looks wherever you aim. The hero's face tells you the rest: a grin when a charge is ready, a gasp when he's winded, a sticker of his face at the big moments.

Seventy creatures, ten bosses

Five dungeon realms (the Rotting Cellars, the Bone Crypts, the Drowned Catacombs, the Burning Depths and the Abyss) and six outdoor places, each with its own natives, landmark and weather. There are shielded soldiers, ceiling-drop ambushers, blink stalkers, rat kings and mimics. Bosses rotate between runs, and after the win the descent carries on in endless mode.

Made entirely from code

Every model, animation, sound and note of music is generated by code. There are no sprite sheets, no 3D model files and no audio files.

Options

Rebindable keys, screen shake, reduce flashing, text size, hit-stop, UI scale, Low / Medium / High graphics, and Gore off.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

AI coding assistants were used during development to write parts of the game's source code, including the code that procedurally generates its models, animation, effects, sound and music. The developer directed the design and reviewed and tested all of it. The game does not use AI to generate anything while you play.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Doomy Downer depicts frequent, graphic fantasy violence against undead, monsters and humanoid enemies, rendered in a blocky voxel style: blood spray, dismemberment, flying body parts and persistent corpses. Organs harvested from slain enemies are used as a crafting currency. There is no sexual content. A "Gore: Off" option in the pause menu replaces blood and dismemberment with a clean effect.
