An offensively inaccurate depiction of the competition between Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti told with cartoonish sensibilities. | Ah! To be "vuomo eccellentissimo e singhularissimo"...

About This Game

"History doesn't rhyme, it repeats."

...

I don't know, you know?

I'm always rather bad at writing these descriptions. But I'll give it my best shot for the love of the game!

This is Concorrenza, my third iteration on my quest to "Make Videogames Literature".

In this iteration, I've created scenes that are almost comic-like in nature... At the very least, they are sequential art.

Now, whether or not the format is "comic" is up for debate, but surely you will agree that much of the storytelling is comic in nature. I tend to find my interest lies in an odd mix of comic and confrontational philosophy. However, while my previous works, Everything I Know, and Everything I'm Ever Gonna Know and Basic Parade or: "you should be depressed" leaned more heavily towards confrontational philosophy, I made the conscious effort to make Concorrenza lean more towards the comic.

It does, however, still retain elements of this "confrontational philosophy."

Though, perhaps less explicitly? The theme at the root of this modern visual novel is "the struggle for candles to show their beauty when in the presence of fluorescents." Whether or not this theme is evident in the pattern of the story, I suppose, is up to he who interlocutes with it.

But I digress.

Once again, as with BASIC PARADE, I have chosen to write this as a particularly linear modern visual novel. I'll likely do some more experiments with branching going forward, but it has been quite freeing -- strangely enough -- to tell a story almost entirely without branching.

So I suppose that just about wraps it up for this description. I don't know if I even explained what this is, but I hope you'll give it a shot anyways. There's a demo if you want to dip your toes in first.

[FEATURES]

  • Press space or button south to continue!

  • There will be lots of images and dialogue :0

  • Funny goofy emotional story.

  • Salai is kindof creepy.

  • At some point in the novel you will control a character that can walk.

  • Weird.

  • SEXY!

  • ...Well, no.

  • Large mouth guy based on a sketch from Leonardo's actual notebook. I found out about it from reading Walter Isaacson's excellent biography based on Leonardo. When I saw the sketch of this disembodied mouth with its lips prosected... Well, I just had to turn it into an adorable character! Most of the story is only pseudo-fantastical, but this character is an exception. I kind of like this with my fantasy, you know? Almost like a merging of different fantasy philosophies. In this case, merging mere "cartoon" fantasy with historical fiction and almost like a biological fantasy of some sort. I don't know if that makes sense...

  • Limited color palette!

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This is a story based on Leonardo DaVinci and Michelangelo. Major themes in their lives and art revolve around sex and sexuality. Many references are intended to be comic due to the general tone of the visual novel, yet I have been intentional to handle said references with good taste none-the-less. Any direct depictions of nudity come purely from classic works. (Michelangelo's David may make a guest appearance, for example.)
