What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Mountainhall is a deep, systemic game, and games like this get better when players push on them. We want people digging into the simulation, finding the stories and the sharp edges it throws up, and telling us what the fort needs next. Early Access lets us build the rest of the game with those players involved, instead of guessing on our own.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to spend roughly a year in Early Access. Really, it will take as long as it needs to. We would rather finish it well than rush it to hit a date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to keep widening the world with more workshops, creatures, biomes, and deeper industry. We want to add proper onboarding, a real settings menu, and controller support, and to grow the game beyond its current challenge into a longer arc with goals worth chasing. Much of what lands in the full version will come from what players ask for along the way.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“A playable pre-alpha. The colony sim already runs end to end: you dig, build, farm, craft, trade, and defend a fortress in first person, with dwarves who live their own lives and occasionally make legendary things. What's still rough or missing is the shell around it, onboarding, settings, and a longer game to build toward. Expect sharp edges, and be aware that saves may not always carry across updates while the game is changing quickly.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the price gradually as the game grows with new features and content. Getting in during Early Access means the lowest price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to work closely with players on our community hub and the Steam forums: reading bug reports, taking feature requests, sharing what we're building, and letting the people playing steer what comes next. Swapping world seeds and fortress stories is part of the fun too.”

About This Game

Dwarves have chosen you. Will you lead them?

A new land, a new opportunity. Will you build a settlement, a fortress, a Mountainhall?

Mountainhall is a first-person colony sim. Most games in the genre hand you a cursor and a view from above. This one drops you inside the fortress. You play the overseer, on foot. You help dig the tunnels. You set down the workshops. And when the goblins arrive, you'll lead them into battle.

A home worth fighting for

Your dwarves look to you, but they have lives of their own. They make friends and pick fights, fall in love and hold grudges, celebrate and grieve. Lead them well and one might vanish into a workshop for days and return with an artifact the whole hall remembers for generations. Lead them badly and, well, you'll find out what dwarven temper looks like.

The mountain will test you. Water goes where water wants, so open the wrong seam and you'll be bailing out the bedrooms by dawn. Magma waits in the deep. Granite laughs at a copper pick, but forge a steel one and follow the right vein, and you'll pour your first bar of bronze from ore you dug and smelted yourself.

Above, the seasons turn. Traders come to haggle. Winter comes to see if you were ready. And some seasons the goblins come to see if you're worth conquering.

Build it. Then hold it.

The mountain never stays safe for long. A hard winter can cost you as much as an enemy. Beasts stalk the deep dark and the woods above. And the greater your hall grows, the more the goblins decide it ought to be theirs. There's no finish line here, only the fortress you keep raising and the threats that keep testing it. Every great hall becomes a story, remembered as much for how it fell as for how it rose. What will they say about yours?

Early Access

Mountainhall is early. The simulation underneath already runs deep. What's still being built is the shell around it: a tutorial, real settings, and a longer game to sink into. Early Access is where the rest gets made, shaped by the people playing it. Play it, break it, tell us what you love or hate, and that's what gets built next.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Currently I am developing this game as a solo self-funded "indie dev" and games need a lot of assets to be fun. I currently have used free (Creative Commons Zero) assets for audio, and generative AI for some placeholders in the game. I am currently in the process of finding both audio and visual artists to replace the AI generated assets, it takes time and resources, but ultimately I want all the assets to be hand authored by humans.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Dwarves like to drink ale and fight goblins! Sometimes battles do not end well against overwhelming forces.
