What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Escape the Flood! lives or dies on one thirty minute race, and the only honest way to tune that race is to watch a lot of people run it. How fast the water should climb, how much wood an island should hand you, how long a group stays friendly when there is one boat between them. We can guess at those numbers, but players answer them properly. Early Access lets us balance against real sessions instead of our own assumptions, and it lets the multiplayer side grow with a community that is actually there when a lobby needs filling.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are planning on roughly twelve months. If feedback pushes the game somewhere worth going, we would rather take longer than cut the work short.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our goal is more of everything the island can throw at you: additional terrain and biome variety, more craftable gear and boat parts, and a wider spread of situations across a run. Alongside that we intend to keep working on balance, performance and polish in both solo and co-op, and to deepen the progression and customisation options. The exact shape of this depends on what players run into during Early Access, so we would rather describe the direction than commit to a fixed list.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The full core loop is playable. Islands are generated fresh each round, the water rises and floods the terrain, and you can gather, craft and build the complete boat from hull to rigging. Drowning, oxygen, the ninety second bleed out, ghosts and shrine revives are all in. Solo play and online co-op for up to four players both work, including proximity voice chat and the captain system that decides who sails and who watches the shoreline shrink. What is still thin is variety: island types, items and longer term progression, plus ongoing balance and polish.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We currently plan to raise the price when the game leaves Early Access, so that it reflects the content added over the course of development. This is our intention rather than a fixed commitment, and we will announce any change on the store page and in our news posts well before it happens.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The Steam forums and our Discord are where this happens. We read bug reports and balance complaints there, post what we are working on, and explain the reasoning when we change something people care about. Patch notes go up for every update, including the parts that did not work out. We are a small team, so we cannot act on everything, but we would rather hear early and loudly that a mechanic is not landing than find out at 1.0.”

About This Game

The water is already at your ankles.

You wash ashore on a sinking island. The ocean climbs, the beach goes first, and the ground disappears under you one stretch at a time. Gather what the island gives you, build something that floats, and be on it when there is nothing left to stand on.

  • A new island every round. Terrain and resources are randomly generated. Nothing to memorize, every start a cold start.

  • Short, brutal rounds. Long enough to lose everything, short enough to immediately try again.

  • Chop, mine, haul, craft. Nothing you need is in one place, and the tideline eats the ground behind you while you fetch it.

  • Stay above the water. Oxygen runs out fast, and the island has no shallow end left.

  • Solo or co-op. Split the island, cover more ground, revive each other.

  • The captain decides when to sail. First one aboard holds the wheel. Wait for the others, or leave them on the rock.

  • Proximity voice chat. You hear whoever is close. Everything else is out of earshot.

  • Axe, pickaxe, spear, fists. All of them work on other players too.

A finite amount of island. Everything else is up to you.
