What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Coldwatch is built around one question: how deep can you get before the dark takes you? That kind of escalating, run-based survival horror only works if the tension is real, and the only way to know is to put it in players' hands. Early Access lets us tune the core loop, the threat, and the sense of dread against real feedback rather than guesswork. The community's input on what feels fair, what feels broken, and what feels genuinely frightening is the single most valuable thing we can get. We want to build Coldwatch with its players, not just for them.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan for Coldwatch to be in Early Access for roughly 12 to 18 months. This gives time to expand the world with new maps and threats, deepen the upgrade and progression systems, and let the story unfold across more of the descent, while keeping the experience stable and polished at every step. The timeline may shift depending on player feedback and the scope the game grows into, and we would rather take the time to get it right than rush the full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version delivers the complete core experience: drone flight, night-vision and thermal scavenging, the survival loop, and permadeath. For the full version, We plan to expand significantly on this foundation. We plan to add more maps to explore, new threats lurking in the dark, deeper drone upgrades, additional game modes, and more of the story that explains what came with the dark. We also plan to introduce features like an endless mode, global leaderboards, and full controller and Steam Deck support. The goal is for 1.0 to be a richer, deeper, and more complete version of the game Early Access players already love, shaped in large part by their feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version launches with the full core loop playable from start to finish. You pilot your drone out into the dark each night using night vision and thermal, scavenge for resources, and weigh greed against a draining battery and the coming dawn, knowing the danger is drawn to your light, heat, and noise. At launch it includes the shelter base phase with upgrades, a starting set of maps with randomized loot and threats, run-based progression with permadeath, and the first layers of the mystery of what happened to the world. This is an early build. Expect rough edges, ongoing balancing, and systems that will deepen over the course of Early Access. Content, difficulty, and polish will grow throughout development, guided by player feedback.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as Coldwatch grows with new content and features during Early Access. Players who join early get the game at its lowest price and help shape its direction, which we think is the fairest way to reward early supporters. The exact pricing may be adjusted as development progresses.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is central to how Coldwatch will be developed. We plan to stay closely involved through the Steam forums, a community Discord, and regular development updates. We're especially interested in feedback on how the core loop feels, whether the tension lands, whether death feels fair rather than cheap, and which threats and mechanics are genuinely frightening. As a small team, we can stay flexible and responsive, and we plan to let players input directly guide what gets added, adjusted, and prioritized as the game evolves toward 1.0.”

Roadmap

About This Game

Coldwatch is a single-player, run-based survival horror game. Something came with the dark a few weeks ago — now you survive alone in a shelter, sending your drone out each night to scavenge for supplies, parts, and the truth, using thermal and night vision to see in a world with no light left. But every light you switch on draws the dark closer. Grab what you can. Get home before dawn. You won't last forever — only deeper.

THE LOOP (WHAT YOU DO)

  • Plan your night from the shelter — check your supplies, pick which map to risk, prep the drone.

  • Launch into the dark and fly out using thermal and night vision — your only way to see.

  • Scavenge for food, drone parts, and story fragments scattered across the map.

  • Scrutinize what you find — is it loot, a survivor, or something that shouldn't be there?

  • Carry only what fits — the heavy part or three rations? Fill the load and turn back, or push your luck?

  • Extract before dawn — drain the battery or run out the clock and you don't come back. Die out there and you lose everything you carried.

THE DARK REACTS TO YOU

The danger is never seen — only felt. And everything you do draws it in.

  • Your light, heat, and noise pull it closer the longer you linger.

  • You'll never see it clearly — you'll know it by its signs: a heat signature with no body, something moved since last night, a sound from the wrong direction, cold creeping into your feed.

  • The deeper you push for better loot, the more dangerous the way home becomes.

SURVIVE, UPGRADE, GO DEEPER

Build yourself up between nights — everything you scavenge keeps you alive a little longer.

  • Drone: bigger carry capacity, longer battery, better sensors, repairs.

  • Shelter: light, power, and — when the dark starts reaching you — defense.

  • Character: food and health to push survival further.

MULTIPLE MAPS, DIFFERENT RISKS

Travel between locations you unlock — but you never leave the drone's eye.

  • The Farm: open, learnable, moderate loot — recover and rebuild here.

  • The Hamlet: abandoned houses and tight interiors — richer, more to scrutinize, more places it can be close.

  • The Deep: remote, dark, unreliable signal — the richest loot and the boldest danger. Push your luck.

THE RUN NEVER ENDS THE SAME WAY

The world is fixed, but the night never is.

  • Randomized loot, threats, and anomalies every night.

  • Fog, rain, and pitch-black nights that change how far you can see.

  • An escalation that grows worse the deeper you go — and always, eventually, wins.

FEATURES

  • Single-player first-person drone gameplay with thermal and night vision.

  • Greed-vs-extraction loop under a battery and a dawn deadline.

  • A danger that reacts to your light, heat, and noise — felt, never shown.

  • Scrutinize-and-judge scavenging: tell the loot from the wrong.

  • Run-based survival with meta-progression: upgrades, unlocks, and uncovered story.

  • Multiple maps with different risks, rewards, and specializations.

  • Randomized nights for high replayability.

  • Built around a distinctive, clippable night-vision/bodycam look.

EARLY ACCESS NOTE

Coldwatch is being built in public: the core loop comes first, then more maps, more danger signs, more resources, deeper shelter defense, and more of the story behind what came with the dark.
