What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Evolve is built around deeply connected systems. From survival, weather and seasons to wildlife, farming and world simulation. Early Access lets me develop and balance these systems alongside players, using real feedback to shape priorities, improve the experience and ensure each new feature strengthens the world as a whole.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Expected to be in early access for 2 years.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to expand the Early Access foundation with deeper survival and crafting progression, more prehistoric wildlife, biomes, resources, building options. We also expect broader multiplayer features, improved mod support, further optimization and substantial polish informed by community feedback. The core sandbox experience will remain the same.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access release will begin with the Stone Age: gathering natural resources, knapping stone tools, making fire, hunting, farming, building shelters and surviving changing weather and seasons. It will provide the complete foundation of the survival sandbox, with content, balance, performance and supporting systems expanded throughout Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Unknown at this time.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to use Discord as the main place for development updates, player feedback and community discussion. Players will be able to report issues, share ideas and discuss balance, usability and new features. This feedback will help us identify priorities and refine the game throughout Early Access.”

About This Game

Evolve: First Age is a hardcore survival game set in a prehistoric world ruled by dinosaurs. You start in the Stone Age with nothing. Dig into the land and reshape it, build a home that can survive the winter, hunt, tame and ride dinosaurs, and lead your tribe forward through the ages. Play it alone, with friends, or against rival tribes.

Shape the land

The terrain can be dug and reshaped. Cut into hillsides, flatten an area for building, or tunnel underground. Water flows through the landscape too, so you can dig channels from rivers to redirect water into moats, fields or wherever you need it.

Build using timber, wattle, mud, stone and thatch. Start with a small shelter and gradually expand into a settlement with farms, workshops and defences. Buildings need proper support, so how you put things together matters.

Worlds range from roughly 10 km to over 100 km across, surrounded by ocean.

Hunt, tame and ride dinosaurs

Dinosaurs don't simply spawn around the player. They exist in the world, moving around, feeding and interacting with their surroundings. Herbivores travel in herds, while predators hunt and can follow you through forests and across rivers.

Hunting a large dinosaur can provide enough food for days, but getting close to one without proper protection is dangerous.

Some dinosaurs can also be tamed, saddled and ridden. They can help you travel faster, carry supplies and explore further from home.

Survive the seasons

Weather and seasons play an important part in survival. Rain leaves you wet, winter brings freezing temperatures and shorter days, and without shelter or a fire, surviving the cold becomes difficult.

Farming follows the seasons too. Crops have different growing periods, frost can destroy what you've planted, and wild food becomes harder to find in winter.

Preparing for winter means gathering fuel, preserving food and making sure your settlement is ready before the temperature drops.

The world also continues to progress while you're away. Crops grow or die, and fires eventually burn out.

Play solo, with friends or against other tribes

Evolve has been built with multiplayer in mind from the beginning, but the entire game can be played alone.

Play solo at your own pace, or form a tribe with friends to build, farm, hunt and explore together.

On PvP servers, other tribes become another threat to deal with. Build defences, compete for territory and raid other settlements while protecting your own.

Dedicated servers are supported up to 32 players, with configurable rules for PvP, raiding, death penalties and survival difficulty.

Progress through the ages

You begin in the Stone Age, with the longer-term goal of progressing through different ages and discovering new materials, equipment and technologies.

Progression involves exploring the world and overcoming challenges rather than simply earning XP.

Some caves lead deep underground, where powerful creatures guard items needed to advance. The first of these is the Ancient Crucible, which allows you to build a furnace and begin moving beyond the Stone Age.

Future ages will introduce new materials, environments and challenges as development continues.

Hardcore survival

Your character develops through physical activity rather than traditional XP bars or skill trees. Running, carrying heavy loads and other activities improve strength and stamina over time, while inactivity can cause them to decline.

Combat uses physical weapon contact, so attacks need to actually connect with their target, and every swing costs stamina.

Death has consequences. Your belongings remain with your body for a limited time, and you'll lose some of the physical progress you've made. Anything you've built remains in the world.

Early Access

Early Access will begin with the Stone Age, with later ages added throughout development.

The focus is on building each age with enough depth and content before moving on to the next. Evolve is a long-term project, with plenty more planned beyond the initial release.
