What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We believe Early Access is the ideal way to develop innovative games – by playing with players and listening to players.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect the Early Access phase to last between 6 to 12 months. However, we don't believe development on ToV will drastically slow down after release. The cycle we follow – play the game, listen to players, add features, fix bugs, repeat – is, in our experience, the only viable path for online games.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will offer a more polished experience, along with potential feature additions such as:
- Core loop: More objectives – Explore, Exploit, and Exterminate will complement the existing Expand.
- Core loop: We plan to expand the Diplomacy layer – with more functional Alliances, more demanding and oppressive Suzerainties, neutral systems, open systems.
- Core loop (optional ideas): We aim to keep core gameplay simple and elegant, but we’re considering additions like Doomsday Devices, Gas Clouds, Warp Gates, Jump Gates, Wormholes, Scan Amplifiers.
- Social: full localization into additional languages, and optional primary / secondary campaign language selection.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Players can currently create custom campaigns and play them – which covers about 90% of the core gameplay. We invite you to try it and share your thoughts – we're excited to hear your feedback!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“ToV is free to play and always will be. We are considering optional paid cosmetics and campaign customization features, but it's too early to share concrete details.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“All community members are welcome to share feedback, reports, comments, and suggestions. We plan to focus on the most effective communication channels:
- Our Discord server
- The Steam Community Hub
Both will receive prioritized attention from the developers.”

About This Game

  • ToV is a slow real-time / turn-based hybrid game, where turns (called ticks) end automatically. A typical game (called a campaign) takes a week or longer.

  • ATWAR (Advance Tick When All Ready) mode allows to advance ticks faster, making possible to play the whole campaign in one evening.

  • Rule-based diplomacy:

    • Defense pacts with defensive wars auto-join

    • Alliances with shared scan range

    • Inter-bloc diplomacy (joins, expulsions, war declarations, peace proposals) resolved by vote

    • Suzerainties with tributes and, well... vassals!

  • Campaign event notifications are sent to your mobile device (currently Android only), so you don’t need to check the game constantly or keep it running in the background.

  • No cheating – each client receives only the information it’s allowed to see.

  • Co-participation info shows which players in your campaign have played (or are playing) other campaigns together – helps detect multi-boxers.

  • Local tick control lets you review past ticks and preview future (predicted) ones – useful for analysis and planning.
