About This Game

In an alternate-history 2005, the forgotten '80s platformer Cocoboy has found new life through a budding online community. 

It's a crisp autumn night. You bought the console, game, and some mods from online. You've dusted off your old CRT, and just got everything hooked up.

Are you ready to finally discover what was hidden inside this game... all those years ago?

Experience the now-cult-classic Cocoboy like never before with MODCARTS — cartridge devices hacked together by tech-savvy community members. These new devices are the key to making the impossible, now possible.

Slow down time, reverse gravity, equip a weapon, and it only gets weirder from there. Discover clever combinations of these mods in order to progress, uncover tricky secrets, and even break level design in unexpected ways!

Need a break from the platforming action? Take a breather, and decorate your bedroom with Cocoboy merchandise. Immerse yourself in an atmospheric, personal space — and fill it head to toe with your new Cocoboy obsession!

Merchandise and Modcarts are both bought using the coins you collect throughout the game's levels. New online listings are posted as you progress and clear certain challenges.

Browse the Cocoboy Forums and experience a quirky community, growing in real-time as you play. Check discussion threads for game tips, hints, rumors, theories, and arguments. Forum threads are made for every level, as well as certain special topics...

Inspect uploaded images of photographs, maps, magazines and more. You'll never have to look outside the cozy confines of your room in the event of getting stuck!

The secrets of Cocoboy run their roots deep, so you'll have to think outside the box.

Among the secrets, lurks a mysterious Secret Seedling in each level. Collecting each one involves a unique meta puzzle, which will require making clever connections between the Cocoboy game and your room. 

You have a strange feeling... that your journey won't truly be over until you've collected them all. Have faith, little Cocoling!

Summary

• Play a level-based platformer with mods, inspired by the classics you may expect. Then, if you are willing, dive deeper and think bigger to discover the secret truths of COCOBOY. The game will not end upon the initial credits roll.

• Frequently unlock new Modcart abilities to toy with as you progress, which radically shifts the way you play.

• Decorate your bedroom with countless collectible merchandise items, with achievement-like goals to unlock them.

• Utilize the in-game forum for hints, and witness the nonsense that fans are getting up to.

Features

• Listen to an original soundtrack blending classic chiptune for the Cocoboy game (composed by Cereza64), and live-recorded acoustic guitar for the room (performed by Cameron Werner).

• Watch episodes of the original hand-animated "Coco Cartoon" (produced by Autag Melocoy) on an in-game VHS player, including live-action "Mr. Coco" segments.

• No surprise horror twists! While things may sometimes feel odd, tense, or mildly spooky, this is not a horror game.

• Support for keyboard & mouse, controllers, and Steam Deck.

Development History

A prototype version was originally developed in one week for Vinesauce's Shroomjam 2024. After seeing how much the original game resonated, we decided to continue development and make COCOBOY a full game.
