Gloomsday is a dark roguelite action-platformer. Thief-turned-mage Gary entered Colwell Academy looking for loot. Now he must fight to escape. Draw mana from your surroundings to cast spells—keep moving or you’ll run out. To be still is to die, but in Colwell Academy, death is only the beginning.

Leaving Early Access: Q4 2027

Note: The developers have not communicated any updates for over a year. The information and timeline described by the developers here may no longer be up to date.
What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Gloomsday's systems are customizable and modular: composable spells, glyphs and pacts. We could not create builds that appeal to all kinds of players without player input. We want an active community shaping what we build next: spell ideas, balance, movement feel, characters, etc. Early Access is how build and communicate with that community.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We aim for a full release in Fall 2027.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“For full release we plan four regions with at least two bosses each plus a final boss, the story's conclusion, and a larger pool of spells, glyphs, and pacts. Early Access launches with the first region and its boss. Exact scope may shift with resources and community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Stable and playable. As of the launch build (July 2026): one full region and its boss, fourteen spells, each with an active cast and a passive enchantment half, 48 upgrade glyphs, health pacts, the Grand Hall hub with persistent movement upgrades, and a practice arena. The practice arena also constitutes the free demo. Runs take about 20 minutes, and there are roughly 3–5 hours of content today. The boss remembers you between attempts, win or lose. For the current state at any given moment, read the latest patch notes. We aim for an update every 2–4 weeks and post them here on Steam.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The demo is forever free, and the full release will come with an increase in price. Early Access may also increase in price as content increases. Buying early means buying a smaller game for a smaller price with free upgrades.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Our Discord is where all development happens in the open. There are forums for spell suggestions, balance discussions, bug reports, and playtest feedback. We aim for updates every 2–4 weeks and post patch notes here on Steam. We read everything.”

About This Game

Gloomsday is a dark roguelite action-platformer where the mana is literally in the air. Survive the ever-shifting halls of Colwell Academy by spending its precious mana wisely. Your enemies will.

THE WORLD IS YOUR MANA BAR

There are no mana bars here. Charge your spells from the mana hanging in the air. Casting drains the region around you; stay still and the world greys out, your spells die, and then you die. But it recovers, slowly. Enemies cast from the same field, so every fight is also a fight over ground: bleed a caster's corner dry, or watch him do it to you.

BUILD YOUR WIZARD

Fourteen spells and counting: beams you charge, heals you channel, fire you wear, summons that fight beside you. Layer on the glyphs, enchantments, and pacts you find along the way. Train your meager thief skills into real mobility. Thousands of combinations, and every build comes out different: glass cannon, tanky summoner, invisible assassin.

WEAVE AGILITY AND SPELLS

Standing still is how casters die. Movement feeds everything here: repositioning keeps your mana flowing, a double jump refunds spell charge, and tight platforming is how you line up the perfect cast. Find your own rhythm — move, cast, move — and turn the room's hazards against your enemies.

COLORFUL CAST

Mora has a plan. "Hat", the hat that talks, has... suggestions. And of the horrors in the academy's depths, some are beginning to remember Gary's name. Triumph or die, friends and enemies alike will have things to say.

EARLY ACCESS WITH US

Gloomsday launches in Early Access with the first map and the first boss: 14 spells, 4 enemy types, the Grand Hall hub, a practice arena, and dialogue that progresses with your wins and losses — about 2–3 hours of gameplay today, growing with every update. The free demo is the practice arena: try every spell against the basic enemies. Want a hand in active development? Join the Discord and give your input. We read everything!
