Cataclysm Patch - 15/11/18

Hey all,

The new version that has gone live is v. 65163.

The core of this patch is AI updates that make it play the end game far more intelligently.

Apologies to those with trackpad issues and those with online lag issues, they won't be addressed in this update. We have fixed the online lag but that was done too late to test and involve so that will form the base of an update next week. We're yet to find a solution for the trackpad issue but we are working on it.

Cataclysm - OUT NOW!

Hello all,

Happy end of the world!

The four horseman rose with the Harbinger to rain chaos and destruction and they have turned the land to ash and cinder - now, nobody knows who resides in Talisman's iconic locations.

It has been a generation since the earth cracked open and the sky fell. The seas rose up to swallow the land, and the land crumbled down to cover the seas. It was the end of the world, yet the world did not end.

The rulebook can be found here.

35 years of Talisman

Today also commemorates 35 years of Talisman. On this day in 1983 the UK's answer to DnD was released to the world. In those years since we've seen many evolutions of Talisman and to celebrate this we'll be discussing what it's like to work on Talisman physically and digitally with guest speaker, John Goodenough. You'll be able to find that here at 4pm GMT.

As is standard, tracking specific bugs between the live build and different builds that we've been working on is normally tough so we are unable to produce a list of bug fixes. This is especially so as we have maintained different builds for the Woodland public build, the Catacylsm, our engine build and the build that we're using to work on what comes next. If you want to know if anything specific has been fixed then please ask.

Dev Note

Some users may see a continuation of issues that presented themselves when we released the new engine. These problems have been difficult to squash as they are proving to be very specific. Unfortunately, it's not a case of us having just broke Macs - for all the users that report failures to launch, struggles to run the game and various other issues, we have updated and fixed some of these problems for some of these users. In development, it's a far easier problem to fix nothing or fix everything with updates as that provides a clear next step. Fixing the same problem for some users, however, is far more of a headache as it seemingly makes no sense for some users to have the problem fixed and some users not to. Rest assured, we plan to continue to dedicate ourselves to ensuring that all users possible can make the leap to our own engine and we will continue to keep contact with those users having problems.

Another standard for a new update, please complete any games that you want to complete on the old build before updating as old saves on the new build may be rendered unplayable.

Along with this, if you lose your Runestones and XP, please go to the leaderboard and hit refresh.

Special thanks…

As always, we are grateful for all the hours that people choose to give to helping us improve the quality of Talisman: Digital Edition. For this expansion we gave more people access at an earlier stage and some folk really went above and beyond in helping us ensure the highest standards possible.

Thanks especially to sjgf, Neil, Nemomon, Neogambit and talismanisland for your continued hard work and support.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Talisman?
Talisman is a board game in which you move around the board building up your character’s strength and magic power by battling monsters, finding treasures, completing quests and trying to be the first player to reach the centre space – the Crown of Command.

Can I play dirty?
That’s at the very core of Talisman! Cast spells at other players to make them miss turns! Steal from them! Turn them into toads! Send powerful allies to do your fighting for you!

How replayable is the game?
The emergent nature of the game means that every game will tell its own tale. The board starts with just the playing pieces and builds up to become a land filled with terrible danger and fabulous treasure! As you move around the board, you must make careful decisions about where to travel as each space can become more dangerous or more helpful as the game progresses. To help you get around, players can use things like teleporting, magic portals and fate, which allows you to re-roll your dice to get different results.

How long is a game of Talisman?
The physical board game can take 2-5 hours with 6 players, but our digital version cuts that down drastically, with an offline 6 player game typically taking no more than 1 hour. Offline and online games can be saved and resumed at any time so your adventures can take as long as you like! We’ve also added some features which decrease the length of games – House rules and Runestone cards. House rules change the basic rules slightly to speed-up the game and Runestone cards, exclusive to this digital edition, give characters extra abilities and allow them to become very powerful much quicker, making for shorter games.

Is there a hotseat mode?
Yes! Look your opponents in the eyes as you face them in deadly combat or sneak up from the shadows and steal their favourite items! All of the fun and social enjoyment of the physical game is captured in the digital version, but with no setup time!

What’s included with the base game and are there expansions?
For the initial purchase, everything that you get with the physical board game is included – all of the characters, spells and adventure cards, plus a few bonuses we've added. Many expansions are available now. These add lots more spells, events, monsters, characters and alternative endings! Extra characters are also available to purchase, including rare characters from Talisman’s history.
