Coming Soon To Early Access

The developers of this game intend to release as a work in progress, developing with the feedback of players.

Note: Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“With more than 1,800 Kickstarter backers already playtesting Macabre, we have seen how important community feedback is for a game built on unpredictable enemy behaviours, procedural maps, and randomised objectives.

Early Access allows us to involve a wider group of players. More players means more data, better feedback, and stronger systems. The more people we have in the Rift, the sharper and scarier the experience can become.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect to remain in Early Access for up to two years. This gives us room to expand content and refine systems while continuing to improve the foundation with real player input. The timeline may change depending on progress and feedback, but our focus will remain on delivering a strong, replayable experience throughout.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan for Macabre to grow during Early Access. Development will be guided by player feedback and our creative goals. Areas we are looking to expand include:

  • Crafting systems for tools and equipment
  • Dismemberment for more visceral monster encounters
  • Roaming animals to add tension and unpredictability
  • Non-verbal communication such as hand signals and emotes
  • New procedural maps in varied atmospheric locations
  • Additional monster forms with unique behaviours and abilities
  • More responsive AI and dynamic world systems
  • Expanded objectives and guidance from Banjo
  • Richer lore and narrative discoveries
  • Additional language support based on demand

These are our current plans, which may change as development continues and community input shapes priorities.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build already includes a playable map with procedural layouts, randomised objectives, and adaptive monster behaviours that react to team size. Core systems such as stealth, progression, objectives, proximity chat, and online co-op are in place and actively refined.

Thousands of hours of playtesting from Kickstarter backers have helped us reach this point. Early Access players can expect a complete experience that is being polished and expanded as feedback comes in.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually increase the price as Macabre expands with additional content and features. Players who join during Early Access will keep access to the game at no extra cost when the price changes.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community involvement has been central since day one. Player feedback has already shaped monster behaviours, map design, and system refinements. We plan to continue this approach through Discord, playtests, surveys, and open discussions.

As a small indie team, we believe transparency builds trust. That is why we share progress openly and respond directly to players. Whether you want to test, observe, or simply follow the journey, your input will always be valued.”

About This Game

Macabre is a high-stakes co-op extraction horror where stealth is survival and the Rift is never the same twice.

Maps shift, objectives change, and the monster adapts. Scavenge rare resources and fight the urge to panic as you stabilise each Rift before it collapses.

Survival isn’t guaranteed. Escape together or abandon your team to save yourself. Trust is fragile. Betrayal is easy.

One truth remains… It’s Macabre.

You will not be able to shoot your way out of this nightmare. Macabre is about stealth, cunning and wit. Stick together to survive, or betray your teammates to keep the loot for yourself.

Just remember, Macabre preys on those who stray from the pack.

Luckily, you meet a fellow Rift enthusiast named Banjo, an eccentric survivor who guides you with his knowledge and gear. He is your lifeline, offering equipment and upgrades that give you a fighting chance. Spend your resources wisely.

Macabre learns as you play. Rely on the same tricks and it will adapt. Each encounter forces you to improvise. Distractions, stuns and even sacrifices may be the only way out.

Every run is a gamble. To keep what you have scavenged, you must reach the Extract alive. If you die, you lose everything. The Rift does not forgive mistakes, and neither will your team. Greed, hesitation or betrayal can be just as deadly as the monster itself.

While avoiding Macabre, you will scavenge powerful artefacts and strange items from fractured timelines. Every piece of loot matters. The right equipment can reveal hidden truths, distract the monster or help you survive long enough to escape.

No two runs are ever the same. Each Rift reconfigures itself with randomised layouts, shifting objectives and unpredictable monster behaviour. You will never feel safe, no matter how many times you enter.

Macabre is a co-op survival horror game from Sydney-based Weforge Studio, an indie team with a passion for horror and multiplayer gaming. Our aim is to deliver one of the most immersive multiplayer horror experiences on Steam. Early Access marks the first step. Revenue from sales will be reinvested into continued development, and we plan to expand the game with new maps, monsters, puzzles and chapters as development progresses, guided by player feedback.

Macabre’s design is shaped by years of gaming experience. The adaptive AI channels the tension of Alien: Isolation. The extraction style risk and reward loop reflects the intensity of Hunt: Showdown and Escape from Tarkov. The social dynamics of trust, betrayal and chaotic teamwork take cues from DayZ, Phasmophobia and Dread Hunger.

At its heart, Macabre is about people. In-game VOIP creates unpredictable alliances, rivalries and betrayals. Just like our co-founders Jay and Jake, who first met through voice chat in DayZ, we want those connections to feel real.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Macabre includes many classic horror elements, such as monsters, intense suspense, and blood. It features mild but frequent depictions of violence and gore, as well as general mature themes. While players can expect a chilling atmosphere, jump scares, and tense situations designed to evoke fear, the game also incorporates a subtle, tongue-in-cheek comedic undertone. This adds an element of fun and light-heartedness to balance the intensity of the horror experience.
