20世紀80年代正當中國實行改革開放的時候，也是剛剛從文革的恐慌中走出來不久的時候，新的政治體制、經濟制度、社會思潮等矛盾不斷衝擊著社會上的每一個人。中國的改革步伐不斷加大，社會中的各階級的社會心態也在不斷的發生著變化。

自中國實行改革開放以後，中國人們的心態也變得更加的開放和包容起來。開始引進外來先進的科學技術和優秀的文化來促進本國的經濟的發展。一直以來社會上流行了這麼一句話“80年代下海經商，90年代炒股，00年代搞網絡”，這反應了不同的時代獨具特色的追求財富的社會現象，但是也從側面反映出了當時中國人們的社會心態和思想潮流。 “80年代下海經商”說明當時人們心態上越來越多的人看到了市場經濟和商品經濟的優點和利益，為此，當時也有很大一部分的知識分子紛紛“下海”，其實從本質上來說，是他們從心裡已經認可和肯定了改革開放的國策了。
1981年3月20日，中國北京大學學生在慶祝中國女排奪得世界冠軍的遊行集會中舉起來“團結起來，振興中華”的旗幟，引起全國億萬青年的強烈反響。

美國在整個80年代，美國經濟一片欣欣向榮，處於復蘇和擴張之中，但是副作用是通貨膨脹率很高，1989年年底通貨膨脹率接近5%。在這個時段，美聯儲一直採取緊縮性貨幣政策，於1988-1989年大幅度提高短期國庫券利率，總算將通貨膨脹率壓制住了。但是，隨後美國經濟出現反轉，1989年之後經濟增長開始缺乏動力。

但是，自從20世紀80年代以來美國的種族歧視呈現抬頭趨勢，並愈演愈烈。這在無形之中給美利堅民族融合蒙上一層揮之不去的心理陰影。 1985年11月2日，一場反種族隔離行動發生在倫敦市中心。

20世紀80年代以來，許多亞洲和拉丁美洲地區的發展中國家大力推行外向型經濟發展模式，積極引進直接投資和其他形式的外國資本，並且採取一系列鼓勵措施促進出口。它們持續保持了5.5%～8%的年經濟高速增長，在較短的時間內成功地實現了由初級產品出口國向製成品出口國轉變。據國際貨幣基金組織統計，1989—1994年，發達國家的對外貿易年均增長率為3.65%，而發展中國家為9.59%，其中發展最快的是東亞和東南亞地區。

經濟全球化使美國獲得了巨額的國際資本。過去十多年裡，美國始終是全球最大的資本輸出國，同時也是最大的資本輸入國。大量的外資淨流入，有效地抵消了國內私人儲蓄水平持續下降和巨額貿易逆差的不利影響，對於保持較高的就業和經濟增長水平具有重要作用，同時為美國保持較低的物價水平做出了不小的貢獻。
