20世纪80年代正当中国实行改革开放的时候，也是刚刚从文革的恐慌中走出来不久的时候，新的政治体制、经济制度、社会思潮等矛盾不断冲击着社会上的每一个人。中国的改革步伐不断加大，社会中的各阶级的社会心态也在不断的发生着变化。

自中国实行改革开放以后，中国人们的心态也变得更加的开放和包容起来。开始引进外来先进的科学技术和优秀的文化来促进本国的经济的发展。一直以来社会上流行了这么一句话“80年代下海经商，90年代炒股，00年代搞网络”，这反应了不同的时代独具特色的追求财富的社会现象，但是也从侧面反映出了当时中国人们的社会心态和思想潮流。“80年代下海经商”说明当时人们心态上越来越多的人看到了市场经济和商品经济的优点和利益，为此，当时也有很大一部分的知识分子纷纷“下海”，其实从本质上来说，是他们从心里已经认可和肯定了改革开放的国策了。
1981年3月20日，中国北京大学学生在庆祝中国女排夺得世界冠军的游行集会中举起来“团结起来，振兴中华”的旗帜，引起全国亿万青年的强烈反响。

美国在整个80年代，美国经济一片欣欣向荣，处于复苏和扩张之中，但是副作用是通货膨胀率很高，1989年年底通货膨胀率接近5%。在这个时段，美联储一直采取紧缩性货币政策，于1988-1989年大幅度提高短期国库券利率，总算将通货膨胀率压制住了。但是，随后美国经济出现反转，1989年之后经济增长开始缺乏动力。

但是，自从20世纪80年代以来美国的种族歧视呈现抬头趋势，并愈演愈烈。这在无形之中给美利坚民族融合蒙上一层挥之不去的心理阴影。1985年11月2日，一场反种族隔离行动发生在伦敦市中心。

20世纪80年代以来，许多亚洲和拉丁美洲地区的发展中国家大力推行外向型经济发展模式，积极引进直接投资和其他形式的外国资本，并且采取一系列鼓励措施促进出口。它们持续保持了5.5%～8%的年经济高速增长，在较短的时间内成功地实现了由初级产品出口国向制成品出口国转变。据国际货币基金组织统计，1989—1994年，发达国家的对外贸易年均增长率为3.65%，而发展中国家为9.59%，其中发展最快的是东亚和东南亚地区。

经济全球化使美国获得了巨额的国际资本。过去十多年里，美国始终是全球最大的资本输出国，同时也是最大的资本输入国。大量的外资净流入，有效地抵消了国内私人储蓄水平持续下降和巨额贸易逆差的不利影响，对于保持较高的就业和经济增长水平具有重要作用，同时为美国保持较低的物价水平做出了不小的贡献。
