据史料记载，从公元前8世纪建城到公元2世纪，古罗马用了1000多年的时间崛起从而称霸欧、亚、非大陆，却在不到200年的时间里迅速瓦解衰败。其间，罗马由欧洲边缘一个不足15万人的弱小国家成长为吞并意大利、横扫地中海、称霸欧洲的耀眼帝国。

　　罗马非一日建成，从地缘小国到欧陆帝国，罗马在变革与转型中崛起：从公民间平均分地到大土地所有制取代小土地所有制；从对黄金的单一贮藏到制造通货膨胀扩大财政收入；从残忍打压基督教徒到政教合一；从民主共和体制到权力高度集中的帝国元首制。期间罗马人口增长数百倍，疆域扩大数千倍。

　　一个国家的兴衰很大程度上依赖于该国的财富涌现能否满足人民的自我肯定需求。古罗马的成功在于政体演变和财富分配，宗教发展和军力增长的综合支撑，而财富的合理有效分配极大地决定了其它诸要素的正常运转。罗马由共和到帝制、由民主到专制并不是历史巧合，而是经过利弊权衡、多方博弈后的一种最优选择。但即便如此，古罗马最终还是衰败分裂，其原因并不单纯是末代君王昏庸无能、天灾人祸难以预见，事实上，当国家发展到一定程度，由于国家财富积累与国民自我肯定需求的极大不平衡，导致各种社会矛盾开始凸显并持续激化，最终使得罗马帝国衰败倾覆。

　　纵观其发展历程，古罗马通过侵略扩张、修筑道路促进对外扩张、透支未来和发展宗教四种主要方式，多方面、多维度地实现财富汇集和流转，满足人们的自我肯定需求。但这四种方式在罗马发展中的作用却不尽相同。
