Gamespy.com - Adventure Game of the Year - "Dreamfall stands so far out of the pack, we believe it would have been a stellar candidate no matter what year it was released". If gaming is ever to be more than merely colored lights and sensation, though, it needs these types of experimental projects to move forward. Gaming may not yet be "art," but with Dreamfall, we're one step closer"

As I said in a review of one of the other Dreamfall games, I was feeling nostalgic after moving and so unboxed my original XBox. While doing so, I found this game unplayed and still in its shrink wrap with all my other games. I knew absolutely nothing about it whatsoever except that it had a pretty girl in a pink tank top on the cover (maybe that's why I originally bought it, lol). But I was surprised at the quality and immersiveness of this game right from the start. The details of the scenery are completely believable. You have the ancient city of Casablanca with it's original arcitecture and wooden and stone benches along side high-tech computer terminals and holographic billboards. You have sleek ultra-modern glass cars driving along narrow stone roadways, and modern skyscrapers off in the distance. Exactly how things will probably be in such places. One thing I must point out is that I actually played this game on the original Xbox. I just recently bought this game on Steam as part of a package because, after finishing it, I wanted to play the prequel "The Longest Journey" and the sequel "Dreamfall Chapters." One minor gripe I have with the Steam version of this game (which I actually didn't play very long because I played it to the end on the Xbox version) was that the mouse was inverted left to right, which made it nearly impossible to control. There was no option to invert the left-right movement of the mouse. It did the same thing with my Logitech USB gamepad, the left-right movement was reversed with no way to invert it. When, oh when, will developers learn that it is absolutely necessary to provide "invert" options on EVERY control axis?!?! Otherwise, this is arguably the best of the three games, though I really liked how Marcuria was an open-world city in the first couple of chapters of Dreamfall Chapters.

Sequel to the Longest Journey, a game I strongly recommend. If you played that, play this too for more of the world you've likely come to love.

Pros:
-Story, if you aren't here for story then you really shouldn't be playing this game at all.
-None of the bizzare puzzles and even more outlandish solutions that plagued the first game of the series.
-There are still some puzzle elements, but not really a focus of the game.
-The already well established setting of the first game is built upon here in the sequel, and you really start to get a feel for this world as a whole.
-More characters with more interesting motivations and personalities.
-The humor is still there and still great

Neutral:
-Not really a ton of gameplay, mostly walking and talking with a few fights, puzzles, and other segments sprinkled in on occasion, which isn't a negative for me, but opinions may vary.
-This game is way shorter than The Longest Journey, and way shorter than the sequel Dreamfall:Chapters as well.
-Combat is pretty garbage, I didn't care, but maybe you might, just know going into this one that they focued more on story than gameplay.
-The graphics are good enough that it isn't distracting.

Overall, if you love story focused games, play The Longest Journey, then play this and the sequel.

After playing The Longest Journey, which I enjoyed so much, I had to play this game.

Some gameplay elements were confusing at first (camera movement, combat system) but I got used to it, and after a while I found myself immersed again in the amazing story.

The witty dialogues, the funny characters, all the good things from the first game were back!

The puzzles were like the first game: mostly doable, but some I had to look up.

So yes I totally recommend this game, but play the first one first.

Beautiful. Emotional. Amazing.

I really think playing the first game before helps to set the whole setting and the mood for it, so be sure to do that as well.

The battle system is horrible, but I still think the game is perfect.

I've also ran into bugs with the res, but quick solutions around the net in guides solving them (like changing a Res for a certain scenes).

Also be sure to pick a guide to know how to adjust the mouse setting to improve the gaming experience.

An amazing game, even now. Though very different from The Longest Journey in many ways, it still manages to captivate the player with the story and draw them further into the world that is Stark and Arcadia. A defnite must if you enjoyed The Longest Journey.

Prepare for a journey of self discovery through distant lands and fantasy wrapped science fiction flavoured worlds.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is primarily an adventure game following the story of one Zoë Castillo and taking place in multiple different and diverse environments. Futuristic sunny and warm Casablanca, downtrodden rainy Venetian canal ridden streets of Newport, snowy medieval steam punk infused Marcuria and even hidden damp tree house based Swamp City. The characters that fill these worlds are also all interesting and unique. As the game relies on plot to drive the player forward, I will not mention anything about it but it does its job very well. The story is interesting and full of well designed characters and locations. The lore is presented in easy to swallow chunks and allows room for interpretation while still feeling solid and believable. This is a must as much of the game relies on walking and interacting with objects. There are some light environmental puzzles that slow down your progress through the story and break the monotony of walking or pushing through the story too quickly. Though it did feel like there could have been more of them as the gameplay is a very shallow mostly consisting of walking and talking too characters. There are some fight sequences but you can see the developers did not invest much time into them as they feel very wonky.

Technically speaking, the game has no larger problems. Mouse and Keyboard controls are not the best but can be tweaked to your liking – I found the gamepad works best. Graphics are acceptable for a 10 year old game and the high colour vibrant art style means time has been kind to it. 1080p works fine with no frame drops on modern machines. Voice work is all very well done and the soundtrack is nothing less than wonderful.

It took me 12 hours to finish it and I couldn’t get enough of it. As a game relying on story employing not all that spectacular gameplay, I was left wanting more. This game is the sequel to The Longest Journey (separate storyline of other character) and prequel of Dreamfall Chapters (continuation). I eagerly recommend this game to anyone looking for something story rich and similar to games like Life is Strange™, Syberia, MYST and anything from Telltale.

It's hard to tell if i would recommend it, it's (more or less) a telltale game

I don't think it's worth it if you are just going to play this one without the prequel or the sequel.
But if you intent to play the Sequel you can get it (on a sale)

Pro:
+ decent story
+ puzzles

A beautiful game about a normal person launched unwillingly on a great quest. This was a touching journey into a wonderful world of modern headaches a magic.

I will admit when I first played this game a few years ago I went searching after words for The Longest Journey because throughout the game I felt like I was missing a part of the story.

This entire series has been amazing and definitely worth looking into. My first experience was on the Xbox 360 with my dad, however somewhere in the middle of the game my xbox had met its fatal end and I was never able to complete the game back when I was in Elementary school. When I first found that it was available for PC and it was on steam I was so excited I bought it right away, yet didn't play it. Instead I looked into it's predecessor "The Longest Journey".
The game is ten times more satisfying if you have previous knowledge or experience playing the first game "The Longest Journey" in April Ryan's point of view. I couldn't be bothered actually playing the first game myself since I have a hard time
getting into games with really low graphics, so Instead I watched an entire playthrough of the first game no commentary before starting the second one. I am super glad I did, since they referenced several things from the first game and acknowledged characters that I could actually recognize, it was just so satisfying to be able to recognize them.

The only thing I didn't like about the game was the lack of consequence or choice effect in the game, whether you chose to do one thing or not didn't effect anything in the story. The most difference it did was effect one aspect of gameplay to make something harder or difficult, like silently disarming a guard or attacking them full on, going the long way around, or taking a short cut. The only differences were dialogue, and even then, most of the dialogue was mandatory to read anyways leaving little to none replayability.

At the same time, I liked that there was lack of choices I know I'm contradicting myself... It was telling you a story in the way they visioned it instead of you putting your own input to it. I loved it, to it's very end.

I also got super excited hearing the news of the third installment Dreamfall Chapters, and knowing that the choices DO actually effect storyline and have tons of replayability.

10/10 Definitely worth playing, Highly recommend playing or watching a playthrough of the first game beforehand though.

P.S The Soundtrack is beautiful.

A very intriguing linear based game with an intersting storyline.

Much like Mass Effect and Dragon Age the story progresses through chosen dialogue. Although here no matter what you choose the path is always the same.
Also just a heads up for anyone on Steam; Dreamfall: The Longest Journey comes before Dreamfall Chapters.

Great gameplay for it's time, and very enjoyable!
