Update 305 Now live on Steam!

It’s been two weeks since our last update, be honest you missed us! Moving to this model has allowed for us to make some much needed changes to our way of implementing and testing changes to the game. This update may seem light, but it has some good fixes and more enhancements to our server browser including a friends filter. This filter will allow you see what servers your steam friends are playing on and get you connected to them.

One of the new additions I mentioned above is “Playtest with the Dev’s,” a weekly opportunity to jump into the beta of next update and play a series of games and give your feedback on the upcoming changes. We strive to make changes that have a positive impact on the community and next to our discord or forums this is a nice direct interface for the players and devs to communicate.

Our newly implemented feedback system has given us some nice results over the last couple weeks. The most selected option for lower rated rounds was “Uneven Teams” and for newer players was “Inexperienced Commander.” To attack these issues we have begun work on a set of new features, the first being a long needed update of our backend Player Skill tracking system HIVE. Hive 2.0 will go a long way towards helping us resolve some old internal bugs, and add some much needed speed to the communication between servers and the database. The second feature is our continued expansion on the tutorials available to players. A new Commander Tutorial is being drafted and developed to give players a better grasp on commanding a team for both Aliens and Marines.

These two features are only the beginning of our Phase 3 plans. We will be starting a new series of QA videos on our YouTube channel to better explain and show off upcoming development on NS2. There will be another blog post next week going into more details on how you can submit questions and feedback for us to talk about in our series.

See the full changelog below and happy hunting!

Update 304 Live on Steam!

With the summer sale now in full swing, we decided to take a lighter approach to the update this week. Minor tweaks and improvements over last week’s patch should address some of the feedback we heard. Moving forward, we are adjusting our patch cycle to be bi-weekly. This allows us to start tackling some larger features and helps with our testing schedule.

As many of you know and for those of you that don’t, each update to NS2 comes with not just hours of development time but lots of bug and gameplay testing. Our playtesters are community volunteers and give many hours each week so that you can enjoy the fruits of our labors. Our EU Playtest Lead Asraniel has been around since the beginning of time and given so many hours that I couldn’t even begin to list all the many influences and tasks he has helped address. Asraniel is taking a step back to focus on his next step in the world and we wish him nothing but the best in his endeavors. He has left his mark on not just this game but our community as a whole, thank you and good luck!

About This Game

Natural Selection 2 pits alien against human in an action-packed struggle for survival. Wield devastating weaponry as a Frontiersman marine, or become the xenomorph as a deadly Kharaa lifeform.

Strategy Meets Shooter

Natural Selection 2 is a First Person Shooter and Real Time Stategy game rolled into one! Each team, alien and human, has a Commander. The Commander looks down on the battlefield and issues orders, places structures, collects resources, researches technology, and deploys abilities.

Here are some gameplay examples: A human Commander could drop health packs and ammunition to a trapped marine squad, and deploy sentry guns to help them defend their position. Or an alien Commander could grow a new Hive to spread infestation throughout newly captured territory, allowing more alien eggs to spawn...

Two Unique Sides

Aliens players choose to evolve into one of five lifeforms: The fast, fearsome Skulk can run on walls and deliver massive damage with its jaws. Lerks fly and deploy gasses to support their teammates in battle. Gorges heal other lifeforms and build tunnels, hydra turrets, walls, and other tactical structures. Fades blink in and out of battle, picking off marines with giant scythes. Finally, the giant Onos is so massive and so tough, that even entire marine squads can't take it down.

Marines wield rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, pistols, and other weapons. Cluster grenades can clear ventilation shafts of sneaky Skulks, flamethrowers make short work of alien structures and infestation, and boosts dropped by the Commander increase combat effectiveness.

When attacking on foot doesn't cut it, marines can construct hulking Exosuits wielding miniguns and railguns, and equip jetpacks for high speed assaults on alien Hives.

Long Term Development

Natural Selection 2 receives constant updates. This year, 2016, Unknown Worlds continues to develop new features, content, and improvements.

Mod Tools Come Standard

Natural Selection 2 comes with all the tools we used to make the game. All game code is open source. That means you can create, and play, an endless variety of mods. Publish, share, and download mods from the Steam Workshop, and automatically download mods when you join modded games.

If you want a FPS/RTS hybrid game you should pick this game, you definitely need a mic and headset in order to play better. It is challenging to beginners especially the alien side. Which mostly requires you to have someone with you when attacking. When taking up this game you should start as the basic unit and not go commander and learn first what is good. So that when you go for commander you know what to do and will lead you and your team to victory

So i bought this game like a year ago and i played 10 hours over the course of a few weeks before deciding it just wasnt fun. Yesterday i decided to reinstall and give it another shot. After taking a few hours to get to grips with the mechanics and feel of the game i was totally hooked. Been playing solidly ever since.

I was kind of worried that upon leaving the rookie servers everything would just feel cheap like in chivalry and id lose interest, but the exact opposite happened. Everyone works together really well and victorys feel hard fought and satisfying. Everytime i died it felt fair, and the large variety of weapons and playstyles avaiable in marines alone lends a ton of replayability.

Its just so satisfying suiting up in a jetpack and having your manouverability increase by like 500 percent. Zipping around like an angel of death blasting away with a machinegun or getting up close and dirty with a shotgun. Or if the situation calls for it whip out a flamethrower or grenade launcher. Maybe just dedicate yourself to accompanying the players decked out in giant mech suits repairing them on the go, while you save up for your own giant mech suit.

This game is just insanely fun and the community isnt nearly as bad as some of the reviews here make it out to be. So far i havnt seen anyone get kicked let alone unfairy and the people using voice chat are fairly relaxed and possesing great teamwork. Theres always 2-3 full servers and at least one full rookie server. Maps are well designed and have decent if not overwhelming variety.

I can easily see myself playing hundreds of hours of this game over the next few months, if this game cost 20 euro id say it was fair. For 10 euro its a freakin steal.

Good. If you like/liked dinosaurs and monsters as a kid, this game is for you. A little hard in beginning, but once you get the hang of it, its awesome.

For example,
Once I was an Onos (big scary gorrilla thing), and was tanking and rebutting entire waves of marines by myself and an occasional Lerk (really helpful, but don't pick if you're new). Every time the marines gained a foothold, I would destroy their buildings. Of course, this was pretty annoying to the marines, so they sent two exos after me. I destroyed one and the other one ran back home. Eventually, with no resources or outposts, the marines were destroyed altogether.

Pretty good, but will get you severely hooked. Only play if you have lots of time .

Best game I have played in my life can't say enought good things about it. But there is a learning curve and he really need to like the game to love it. It has been losing a lot of popularity but there are still about 200-300 actice players around the world and these who sticked are in active commuities are very hard working. I believe if a reboot of the game like a NS3 would take off in the next 2-3 years it would be one of the best games of the year. Over all I love the game and will keep supporting the community and I believe anyone on the edge of getting the game should buy it cause it is worth more than CSGO and DOTA 2 and LOL it really has a friendly community and has very little new members so join and play lots and have fun.

Natural Selection 2 is a great game thats fun and very entertaining, the best part about it is how the commander stations work, so that even if you are not into any FPS games this game can still be very fun to play. For example a friend of mine hates fps games and is a huge fan of rts (which is honesty is a very great trait to have in this game if you are going to be the commander) and he loves this game. I havent put many hours in his game yet but i am definitly planning on doing so.

And P.S. Devs are amazing and really care for the game and are constantly making sure it grows keep up the great work guys!! :D

NS2 is a great game and i really do like it alot. I just cannot recommend it to anyone new because the ship has sailed in more ways than 1.

The main issue is the community, don't get me wrong the playerbase is generally very friendly and accepting of newcomers, it is mostly a plesant experience and they are pretty dedicated to the game. It's just that it's rather small these days and the players who remain are really damn good, even with the basic tools and classes.

You will be the equivilant a Star Trek Redshirt for a long time untill you eventually reach a point where you can at least get some objectives done, and even then you will still be lightyears behind the community skill level, it's so far ahead in fact that i fear that new comers won't catch up, you will spend alot of time lost and dead.

As a result i just can't recommend this to anyone now simply because i don't think you'll get enjoyment from it. Which is a shame because the asymetical RTS gameplay is otherwise great.

Ok, so this is gonna be the first game that i´ll ever review. Can i recommend it? The answer is pretty short, yes i can. It has one of the most interesting game ideas ive ever seen and a pretty good graphic. The gamplay feels nice and smooth, the atmosphere is really great and both races (Marines and Aliens) are pretty even so no race can be called op. Personally i like the community (sure there are always some people that behave like idiots) and would love to see new players in Ns2.
So if you read this and consider buying it, i can only say that these are some well invested 10 euros. And if youre able to get this in the summer sale for 5 euros why are you not playing already?

For people that dont like reading: Should you buy it? -yes you should.

cheers Syntexx

MOST FUN I HAVE HAD IN A WHILE.

This game is fun and lives up to its 10$ price tag. With freinds this game can be a blast and evenmore fun when your team has a good commander.

Buy this game and you will have tons of fun.

PS: Dont buy skins on the market, unless you want to waste money!

Ideally it's a good game but practically it's impossible to play.
There are about two servers in this game always full of players +4 spectators waiting for the next round to join and if you're lucky enough to play inside, you get 999 ping and the game crashes.

Other servers are empty and obviously wont start until there are two commanders in both teams so you basically have nothing to do in this game.
It's online only team deathmatch where in total there are about 48 players and unstable servers.

Amazing concept, mixing RTS with FPS. Think skill-based combat of counter-strike, with a big hint of real time strategy. And aliens.

One of the biggest tragedies I've witnessed in my life is the quite minimal community for this game (I think an average of ~300 player playerbase). In an ideal world, this game would have multiple thousands of players daily. It's a great game, extremely competitive and fun.

Just buy it, expand the community, it's cheap anyway.

Good game, hard for new players to get in to, but good for keeping your twitch and FPS skills sharp. You can usually find teammates to work with if you want to do something fun or interesting, and the community is nice and mature besides a few toxic players and pervasive stacking. As a long time player, the new changes are really good, I don't even like playing on the server that is still on 'classic' mode. Recommended if you like a strategic team game that challenges your twitch skills.
