Even though RTW was not the first Total War game I played (the one I played first was M2TW), I spent lots and lots of time playing campaigns (still trying to figure out how to win a campaign with the Seleucids on H/VH difficulty :P!) and the multyplayer (and that was when I played ut before I bought it here on Steam) on Rome Total War. A game that was revolutionary for it´s time and that still makes me feel good while playing it over and over again. It is in my opinion the best strategy videogame ever made, and it never gets old one decade after it´s release. In many aspects of it´s gameplay, it is superior to Rome 2 - a game that only is good because of it´s graphics and extra-factions, being awfull in every other aspects in comparison with Rome 1. A game that was a huge dissapointment; a game that was the Anakin Skywalker of the Total War series - it was expected to bring back the glory of the series, but it turned the series back again (which happened the 1st time with Empire TW) into the Dark Side of buggyness, unpolishness, lack of good and new features, and the constant DLC whoring, which consists in using the disgusting bussiness practice of breaking the game into little pieces and then sell those little pieces of the game for extra cash (because it makes a all lot of ♥♥♥♥ing sense to pay 8$ to add factions to the game when you could play any faction in the game like 1 or 2 days after Rome 2 was released, just by adding a simple All Factions mod!!!). For anyone who still does not have Rome 2 Total War and never played the original Rome Total War - buy and try the original(and you should do the same for Medieval 2 Total War and it´s expansion, Kingdoms) and don´t make the awful decision of buying Rome 2!

9.5 out of 10 for Rome Total War (and that is the best score you can give to a game, because no game is perfect enough to have a 10/10) and a 6 out of 10 for Rome 2 (since you can´t make a review on Steam of a game I didn´t bought - and that I never will - I decided to make my review of Rome 2 in here). Also, if any of you read this and you are undecided about my advice of not buying Rome 2, please see the 3 review videos (being the most recent one a review of the game 1 year latter after it´s release) made by Reynold Sanity on his Youtube channel - I have no doubt you will follow my advice after you see them: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEpUCoVQvvo3ipCXUGcQ4kQ/videos).

Absolutely amazing game.. If you can get it to work.. For no apparent reason the game won't work on some computers even if the specs are met (I checked) 10/10 game, 1/10 job on Steam's part. Seriously guys, I've looked everywhere on the Steam forums for help and plenty of people have this problem but the steam "support" team doesn't seem to care.

By buying this game, you have no need to buy Atilla or Rome 2, because not only is this game better than Rome 2 in many ways, but it also comes with the Barbarian Invasion expansion, which is cheaper and is better than Atilla.

Rome: Total War is the most highly acclaimed game in the Total War series. Upon it's launch, it was apparent that the Total War series had something different to offer to fans of Turn Based Grand Strategy games. In time, it would become known as one of, if not, the best Total War games ever made. You might ask yourself why out of all the newer Total War games is Rome the best? Well, there's several simple reasons.

Pros:
- Simple design, as it is one of the first TW games
- Large, sprawling cities to battle in, but not too detailed so as to distract the player.
- The single best Soundtrack you will find in any TW game.
- Large map, but not on a ludacris scale such as Rome II.
- Great choice of factions
- Campaign and battle map look beautiful
- This game can be played smoothly at its highest settings on any modern computer
- Massive replay value

Cons:
- Outdated -
Rome II has been out for quite some time, however it is hard to tell which is better. Rome is a nice and simple, beautifully done game. It is what CA was praised for in the Total War series. Rome II is way more technical with a great deal more to learn.

Honestly, there aren't many cons about this game. Just as I have, almost all major and indie critics have given this game a 9/10, 95%, 4.5/5, etc. This was also given "14th Greatest Game of All Time" apparently and I do think it deserves it.

10/10

Note: Rome: Total War was released around the same time as Steam. I did not have steam until about 2008, therefore the hours shown here do no reflect all hours I've played.

As the user-defined tags suggest this is a historical strategy game. The overworld campaign is a turn-based grand strategy- sort of a simplified Civilization. The battles are mostly real time, with a toggle for 2x or 3x, so I guess it could be argued there is a 4x element to the battle.

The campaign takes a long time to finish, but it is good training if you want to play multiplayer. There are some troops that don't seem to be very good relative to their costs- I'm thinking the Arcanii (why only 16????????!!!!!!!!!!), but for the most part the game seems pretty balanced.

The biggest downside for me was the fact that this game crashes every 4th or 5th battle, and I hear I am not the only person who has this problem. The public order system can also be wonky- I lost a settlement to a gladiator revolt, then recaptured it and two turns later there was another gladiator revolt with the exact same amount of gladiators.

Overall, I would strongly reccomend this game if you like the idea of massive battles, tactical thinking, or time consuming strategic considerations. I know I loved it.

This game is a MUST have for any gamer, especialy RTS enthusiasts. Its gameplay is responsive, its factions compelling, and it sports a beautiful campaign. I believe it is underpriced greatly at 10 US Dollars, but who am I to complaign. If you do not own this game... Buy it... I cannot do it as much justice as it deserves... I actuialy never really cared for roman stuff untill i pkayed this game... now I am obsessed... with Rome... SPQR!

THUMBS UP TO ROME!!!

P.S.
There are Gladiators...

Rome: Total War was the third Total War game from Creative Assembly, and it was the best one at the time. As it was expected, it was a game of epic-scale real-time battles and impressive attention to historical realism and detail.
Shogun was a promising start for the series, while Medieval built on that promise to create an even more engrossing strategy game. Rome took the next step, and it was as much a revolutionary step as it was an evolutionary one, thanks to the at the time new 3D graphics engine that made the series' tactical battles (featuring thousands of soldiers) better than ever.
The results were nothing short of spectacular, helping make Rome: Total War the very definition of an epic strategy game and a beloved classic of the gaming industry.

ALTHOUGH this undoubtably the best game from the total war series and one of the best games ever, I DONT RECOMMEND buying this from steam. I dont know what they have done but the game code is altered(1.51 version) and does not run as smoothly as the original CD version (1.5) especially if you havent the most state of the art PC. Find the original and dont worry there are still ways to play multiplayer as well with even greater quality than you would on steam.

This game is by far, my favorite game. Hands down, no competition. It is old, but I've yet to see any other strategy game come close to this. The graphics are decent, considering its age. The gameplay is complex enough to not be bored and just steamroll through everything, yet simple enough to actually know how to use every feature this game has to offer.

The game is basically you controlling a faction during the time of the Roman Republic, and trying to become the best nation. Diplomacy is simple and allies will betray you constantly, unless you would just completely dominate them (and even then, they still might attack you!) The AI is pretty simple to defeat, their entire strategy seems to be just throwing all of their units at you and seeing who wins.

The challenges come when you get into the Roman Civil War. This is an in-game event where the 4 roman factions fight each other for control of Rome. Up until this point, you've just been steamrolling through barbarians with your heavy legionnaires. Once the Civil War starts, you're fighting 3 other roman factions (2 of which have just as much land as you if not more, each) and they have the same troops as you. If you're not playing a roman faction then this will never happen, but it's called ROME total war for a reason.

If you're into strategy games, buy this game. Even if you're not, you should at least give it a try. The controls might be difficult to use at first, but the tutorial is very helpful. You will probably lose your first few campaigns, but once you get the hang of the game it will be so much fun.
