Okay this is my second review, I have already deleted the first one.
The first time I wrote one only 50% of those who read it found it useful.
So I am attempting to make it more useful, so it is going to be a lot longer.
How long have you played the game?? I started playing the game when it was in Beta and only had 1 world, no quests so over 3 years. A lot longer since I played on the original website and the steam hours does not reflect any of that.
Do you recommend this game?? Yes I do. I have "Won" the game and got reset many times while playing.
Why do you recommend this game?? It is a persistant castle building MMO, you come in build your tiny village from scratch, build a castle, research and recruit more buildings and troop types. A single player can hold between 1 and 40 villages.
What makes people stay away from this game?? In my own experience and from what others have told me they leave because they get bored. This game takes a long time to play, you can not win in 15 minutes. The first round on world 1 took over 500 days to complete.
Is it Pay to Win?? It is a mmo, there will be thousands of players. Do players spend hundreds of dollars on this game, yes they do. There are 2 parts you pay for, one is called premium, basically a subscription service like your MMO Worlds of Warcraft. It lets you research 5 things at a time and build 5 things at a time and sends out your scouts and merchants once every 4 hours. The way the game is set up and runs it does not take long before each building you make, each research point takes 9 hours or longer to complete so paying to do 5 at a time is a complete waste of money for me. Also the auto scout and auto trade only works once every 4 hours and not at all if you are online. The second pay option is to buy a random deck of cards. These cards can be anything so there is not really an option for you to go buy 1 card to get an advantage. Everyone gets free cards per week, even the free to play players. All cards are random. There is an option to trade in 5 cards for some card points you can use to get 1 card you want but you need to buy the whole pack first. I spent $10 on this game and have the maximum 14 free cards per week.
Graphics?? The game is over 3 years old, it uses the same graphics from the original stronghold game that came out over 10 years ago. It is okay for what the game does, you will not find "Eye Candy" here.
Sound?? The game plays the same "music" track, which gets old but hey if you listen to the same cd for 1 year you would get tired of it as well.
What do you do in this game?? You start out in a small village, you do research, build production in your villages, research and build your castle. This game is player versus player. That means you will get attacked by other players and they can and do kill you. When you die you can reset or start over on the same world and keep all the gold, honour and research you have at the time of your death. You also get wood and stone amounts equal to the amount you can store on your stockpile for one day. The game is designed around a guild system. You have the option to form or join a group of players in a faction. These groups can then merge into a larger group called a house. The entire game is structred around this key component. Ultimately only one house can survive.
Key features of the game?? The key features of the game are
1) persistant castle mmo
2) player versus player
3) village construction
4) castle construction
Can you tell us some of the things you did not like about the game??
The types of troops is too limited, you have an archer, a pikeman, a swordsman and a catapult.
The parish steward feature is too easy for other players to abuse. The parish army takes no weapons to create only gold. The parish makes its gold from taxing the players villages. A parish army can be used to wipe out a players village. Holding a parish is the only way to get votes to vote in a sheriff or king / queen. This means that only someone in a house will get and hold onto a parish. In my opinion the parish army that the villages paid for should only be used to get rid of the ai enemies, the wolves, bandits and ai castles. I know many players, myself included, would like to have a chance to run a parish especially when some of the current parish stewarts only log in once every 4 days, then do not clear any of the parish enemies but use the parish army to attack other smaller players instead. This one thing seems to be the number one reason why most new players leave the game and should be looked into.
Hopefully that was a better and more useful review for anyone who is thinking of playing Stronghold Kingdoms.
If you have read through this entire reveiw and still did not find it helpful to you please take a moment to leave a comment what you were looking for and I will add it to this review for the next player.
