Info over het spel

Set several years after the end of Risen, raging titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep. His quest begins with rumors that the pirates who frequent the southern islands are the only ones who know a way to get rid of the creatures once and for all and end their reign of terror.

With an all-new pirate-based theme, Risen 2: Dark Waters aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales. A third-person role-playing game set in a dark and gritty universe, Risen 2: Dark Waters maintains the most immersive features of the original Risen, with multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions. These choices will serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character. Together with a highly interactive environment and a full day/night-cycle affecting countless aspects of the game world, Risen 2 will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far.

For anyone who has ever wondered what the Gothic series would be like if it went 'mainstream,' here's your answer. Risen 2 wastes its interesting setting and solid content by wrapping it around horribly flawed mechanics and watered down design. Melee combat is bad, ranged/firearms are absurdly overpowered, voodoo is a shallow replacement for the magic of the past few games, the 'boss' fights are laughable, there are no factions.... There. Are. No. Factions. Rather than improve on their past mistakes, Piranha Bytes is content to just give up and phone it in so long as a publisher is willing to fund the project. Risen 3 should be a trip.

Let's see... Risen 2 is a classic Piranha Bytes game. So what's a Piranha Bytes game like? Well, it is an open world rpg which presents a fabulous world to explore and has ♥♥♥♥ty fighting mechanics.

I am a fan of Gothic series, especially Gothic 1 & 2. So I liked Risen 2 very much. Tough beware if you are not familiar with Gothic. This game may not be the game you want or think. Or it may be.

Risen 2 presents very very very beautiful lands to explore. Besides the models, the graphics are very good and the only thing that prevents you to feel you are actually in that tropical island is the lack of wind on your face. The short but adequate soundtrack also plays it's part well.

So if you like open-world RPGs I definetely recommend the Risen 2. Just keep in mind that Risen 2 is a little "different" game.
Overall game mechanics may be and will be awkward sometimes. The fighting mechanics are broken as in every Piranha Bytes game, especially for the first 10 hours in the game (But don't give up, it gets easier and enjoyable after you get some skills and stuff). The progress is slow and painful. The story is not strong but the cheesy characters are somehow enjoyable.

So it's like a negative review. Actually it is not. The point is, Piranha Bytes never learn from their mistakes. Yet their all games has a kind of strange charm in them. They make you angry, but they make you happy more. Those bad gameplay mechanics that you will complain, you will get to enjoy them after a point. At least, you will ignore them. The "charm" that the game possesses makes you enjoy the game. Besides, Risen 2 really puts you in the world, as Gothic 1 did back in the time. Maps are so lively. You can play and enjoy the game even just for that.

Piranha Bytes, you really disappointed me. The game itself isn't THAT bad, it's just...neither Risen nor a Gothic. It's just way too easy, except the beginning, which was ok.

It just really sucks that I have to play for hours to get atleast a little gold, but in the last third of the game I have so much gold, gear and I've got all the skills but I don't f**kin need it anymore. And no that isn't normal at all, it just makes me angry that I've searched all these chests and treasures for nothing. Then there's another thing. The short ammound of time I needed to get thorugh that game, (I couldn't finish it completly though, because I felt the huge urge to puke, because of how bad it was (wasn't more than 1 hour to the end though)) I only needed 30 hours for all quests, main and sidequests. That's like a joke for an RPG like this.

I mean, there were some really funny parts in that game, especially the gnome island was cool and all, but I still felt like I was just playing to finally come to the good part, like..when the hell is it finally becoming a Risen?

Just let Risen 3 become a real Gothic PB. Do not buy this game. I can't recommend it at all.

I got a bad first impression as there are many regressions compared to previous Piranha Bytes games (Risen and the first three Gothic). Graphics glitches, a poorer NPCs behaviour (more static, more repetitive movements, more exploitable....), a few of important changes in the gameplay such as the missing animation while you use a potion or food to heal yourself that makes the fights much easier as the healing effect is immediate or almost so... Despite that, it is still clearly a Piranha Bytes RPG game and I very enjoyed it. It seems what it is really improved compared to the first Risen are - at least - some aspects of the story: narration, dialogues (not always good though), two-three well done characters (especially Jaffar, "♥♥♥♥ yes", he is a fun travelling companion). I'm not a fan of the Pirates, but looks as it may be a good game for people who is looking for this, due to the gameplay and even the story.

I loved this game, and I kind of feel bad that the first 3 top reviews for this game are negative. It is not an amazing game, and to begin with the Gothic games were never regarded as really good games anyway, but it is surely a game worth checking out. I have great memories with Gothic 1 and 2, and while i did not enjoy Gothic 3, Arcania (even though someone else developed it) or the first Risen, Risen 2 is in my opinion a game worth playing and finishing and the best Piranha Bytes made so far.
So starting with the good bits, the story is quite good. It is memorable and so is the world and the quests. There are some exceptional characters with an amazing personality (Jaffar, Bones). It's supposed to be the kind of game where you want to explore every corner of the map, open every chest, kill every mob and do every quest to get the highest amount of exp and gold to become overpowered. And this is why it is the best 'Gothic' game, because it does a very good job at that.
And the bad bit: the combat is simplistic, and the boss fights not that epic. The factions are not as good as the first games. The talent tree is not perfectly optimised but there are unique 'piratey' items in the game that sort of help that later in the game. Some abilities are pointless and require a lot investment to get them and muskets are just too strong. And while you are a pirate captain and hunt down other pirates and have your own crew, plus the drinking and shooting mini-games and treasure to find, it just doesn't feel like you are a pirate. Oh yeah and main flaw, achievements stop counting if you exit the game.
So if you want a relaxing 'piratey' game, with lots of conversations, zones to explore and loot to find I think it does a pretty good job at that.

This game is absolutely terrible and I recommend that you steer clear of it.

It has perhaps the worst combat I have ever experienced in the game, and it was a nightmare to play. I thought the original Risen had some terrible combat, but this one has somehow been made worse. You have to level up your sword fighting abilities before you can actually perform moves likes parry and riposte. So for the first 10 hours of the game I was just blocking with my sword and doing simple attacks.

The other problem is that the enemy combat AI is horrendous. A majority of enemies felt like they were literally programmed to just keep attacking you every half second, effectively locking you out of performing any moves whatsoever. Add to the fact that groups of enemies (which you tend to encounter most, rather than a single enemy) will just gang up on you and you'll just see your life quickly tick down as you stumble with each attack, never getting a moment to even initiate your own attack.

But if you wait it out long enough, you will eventually get moves that can counter an enemy. Unfortunately, these moves are really only meant to be used against human enemies. And the majority of enemies you fight in this game are animals and creatures, so again you're back to just the spamming attack method.

If you wait even longer, after about 20 hours into the game you can craft an extremely powerful sword which basically kills enemies in two shots. So suddenly after the long, drawn out, tedious battles that you had to put up with for the entire game, now you have the ability to stomp all over everything. But the game's almost over at the point, so it's pretty much a waste.

I don't know why I continued playing this game until the end, but I wanted to see if there was any redeeming aspects later on. The story and quests are only decent at best, but definitely not worth putting up with the terrible combat for. And I suspect that most people will get fed up with the combat so early on that they'll miss the actual RPG elements in the game.

And finally, if you do make it to the end of the game, the final boss fight was the easiest battle in the entire game. And it was such an anticlimatic finish that I was confused when there wasn't more to it. So no, there was nothing worth sticking through the entire game for.

I'm just baffled how this game could have made it so far into its production lifecycle. It's such a mess, and this is one of the few games that I will actively tell people not to purchase.

About a dozen of the achievements are broken. And every time you quick save it creates a separate file on your computer. And I was constantly quick saving, so every time before I exited the game I would end up with about 100 wasted files that I would have to delete myself.
