What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Making a game with the scope and scale of Black Mesa is a massive undertaking. Back in 2012 we made the decision to release what we had completed up to that point, and were blown away by the community’s response, feedback, and improvements to our work. We want to keep that relationship alive and well by using Early Access as a tool for allowing our community to participate in the final phase of Black Mesa’s development.

In addition, our ambitions go beyond the original Xen chapters found in Half-Life. We have a standard of quality that we have to achieve. Early Access allows us to commit resources to bring you the remaining chapters with the quality that you expect.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently have the first ~85% of our single player campaign completed. For the last 15% we want to not only recreate it, but improve upon it to make it an enjoyable and memorable experience. We feel it will take us considerable time to get the last 15% up to our standards, and putting a time estimate on it would be a total guess.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The conclusion of the single player campaign, with the addition of the Xen chapters
Final polish on the Earth-based chapters of the single player campaign
More multiplayer maps
More multiplayer gameplay modes”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Over 10 hours of single player campaign. Multiplayer deathmatch and team deathmatch with 6 completely re-imagined Half-Life 1 maps on the Source Engine.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Black Mesa will be $19.99 USD during the Early Access phase. This price will not change after we move out of Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We intend to work closely with our community as we complete the final portions of Black Mesa. We started out as a modding team aiming to do true justice to a Half-Life: Source port, and we won’t forget our roots.

The Black Mesa game hub and forums will be the primary points of interaction with our users. Many team members regularly browse these areas to discuss ideas with the community, and to show progress on game development. Community feedback will be sorted into groups and taken into account as we develop.

We also support Steam Workshop, and will be watching and encouraging developments there.”

Surface Tension Update - Patch 2

Note: This update does not contain Xen! We are hard at work on Xen. This is a small stability update aimed at lower-end users.

Programming
  • Fixed a number of potential crashing issues on low-end graphics cards.
  • Fixed an issue with the depth buffer that was causing the game to crash for some users.
  • Fixed some instances of the "Disable CSM" option not working properly.
  • CSM/depth buffer will now be disabled completely by default on low-end graphics cards that are not officially supported.
  • Fixed mat_hdr_level & mat_tonemapping_occlusion_use_stencil convars not working properly. This will hopefully help to resolve a sporadic issue for some users where the game would turn dark after a few seconds. If your game turns dark after a few seconds, try setting mat_tonemapping_occlusion_use_stencil to 1 in the console.

I was never into video games when I was a young kid. I had other hobbies. When I was living in England when I was in middle school, a buddy gave me a "Demo Disk" from the British PC Gamer, and told me to load the game Half-Life on it. The demo was a stand alone level (if anyone here is in their thirties and can remember), and this was at a time where you could fit a few demos on a CD included with a magazine.
Half-Life changed my life. I became a life long PC Gamer. All these years later it's always there. We played it on my five PC LAN growing up; moving onto HL:OP, CS, DOD, and NS. And I played through HL2 a thousand times in High School, College, and the Army. Now my son watches me play them.
Point in fact, the original HL is a master-piece, but dated graphically (textures, models, and effects). Normally, I never buy early access on Steam, but I was willing to take a chance for this. This game is missing Xen, but to be honest, I always thought the Xen levels were a pain. Black Mesa is gorgeous and true to it's source material. I felt the people who made this product were life long fans like myself, and put their talents to good use. The attention to detail makes it a labour of love. In an age of COD madness, this game has a soul, and is worth your time and your money.

Playing Black Mesa is like meeting an old crush, and seeing she's even hotter than she was before. More than just a nostalgic trip through the original HL, it completely re-imagines familiar environments. And it looks gorgeous! The rusted decay of the old rail system, the shiny corporate-esque science labs of the Lambda complex, the war-torn desert surface...it all looks amazingly detailed. Add the improved enemy AI and you've got a hell of a shooter. One thing hasn't changed, however: the short life span of those NPC security guards.

Its presentation is better than the original one with the help of source engine. Scripted and challenging events has its own value for replayablity. If you play it, play on hardest setting and survive the thing.
Multi has about 10 people mostly when ever i go in maps and gameplay has fluidity and mostly trying to survive the next enemy player, by collecting stuff.

A wholly appropriate and honourable rendition of the FPS classic Half-Life 1. This is what Half-Life: Source should have been. If HL1 is too vintage for your taste then give the series a chance with this game, and for players who enjoyed the original HL1 you can't miss this amazing recreation.

If you enjoyed the first Half-Life, then you'll want to make sweet love to this title.

Even though it is the exact same game but with a face lift, there are subtle references to the original. (i.e. the dialogue with the Not-Barney Security Guard in the beginnig.)

A must have for the Half-Life fan.

Let's start by saying it's a great remake of HL1. I played it back in 2012 when Crowbar Collective released the free version. What can I say?

Advantages:
1) Great graphics. Overall beauty of the world geometry is amazing.
2) Details. Every level, model, texture and particle is made 'with love' and looks like it's suppose to be there. There's no feeling like 'oh, why this door is here' or whatever like that.
3) Brilliant voice lines. I don't know if you asked the original actors to record voice lines, but it feels extremely native to HL atmosphere and very professional.
4) Hi-Tech and Sci-Fi. All these highly advanced machines, generators, teleporters are amazing. Nothing to say more. For me it's heaven to play Lambda Core all over again.
5) Hit registration. Not sure if you did something special to lagcompensation/raytracing system in multiplayer, but it's just perfect as it supposed to be.

Disadvantages:
1) Prediction. What is that??? Why predict when we can not! The prediction system in this game is completely broken. You don't see anything wrong in SP, but as soon as you join a MP game to some high-latency server you'll see and hear that all sounds and effects are doubled. It feels like your programmers forgot to put SuppressHostEvents before running prediction. It does crash all the time the game is trying to predict for falldamage sound on Lambda Bunker map.
2) Paticles/muzzle flash effects in MP. You definetely did something wrong to these two aspects. Even on my PC it's lagging as hell when someone is shooting on your screen, but it doesn't when you shoot yourself! Feels like something to do with DLight allocation.
3) MP balance. When I first joined the MP game, I felt like I played it already for my whole life. You did some really good job balancing weapons/damage/health/armor. However, it feels like you appreciate 'luck' in this game, since every explosive weapon is completely overpowered in MP. RPG. You can just pick it up and it doesn't matter if you're good or not - you can just shoot the enemy with 100/100 with one shot in close range BUT you wont die! Even if you had less then 100 HP and no AP, you'll be still alive, but your enemy with 100/100 not. It is OK? Satchels. You can just throw them in to enemy and just press M2. Your enemy is dead. Doesn't require any skills to do so and moreover most of people are doing it in a very 'rat' way. Crossbow. Zoom with it is just fine (except for sensetivity), but explosive mode is just overpowered as well. You can pick it up, face 100/100 enemy and shoot 4-5 arrows to his feet and he's dead. Tripmines. What's wrong with their hitbox? You almost have to face it to explode with bullets. The dot product shoud be > 0.7 to hit it. Not really convinient. Grenades. Why do you use QPhysics for grenades? It's 2016 outside. Moreover you don't see the grenade itself when someone is throwing it at you. Trails and sprites (like in HL2DM/TF2) would be really nice to see in updates.

I would love to help you guys with these issues, so feel free to add me any time.

Black Mesa offers gamers to experience the action and survival packed world of Half-Life again by utilizing the capabilites and elegance of Source engine.

The game has stunning visuals. Adding the physics capabilites of Source engine to the gorgeous graphics takes your gaming experience to another level.

I think it is a game that every Half-Life fan should play and have in his/her library. I highly recommend it.

Team Crowbar has written a love letter to Half-Life and Valve, and it was well worth the wait. This was extremely fun to play through. If you love Half-Life, and you want to run around a secret underground science facility shooting aliens and marines, look no further.

Black Mesa is a faithful remake of Half Life for a modern audience, but still retains the elements which made the original so revered - challenging platforming and combat, a lack of hand holding and complete immersion into the extraordinary world.

I played this back before it was put on steam, and I was Impressed as well as satisfied with the then finished product. I went and picked up the steam version to show my support for the dev team and letit sit in my library for a while, and recently replayed through it when my internet was out - It's improved.

I reran the original Half life countless times over, and Opposing force, and Blueshift, and now I seriously wish that both of those were remastered in such a stupendous manner as Black Mesa. The characters are much more alive, the dialog is crisp, the visuals are modernized and appreciable in their merits, but most importantly it's actually a refreshing take on the old game.

Certain portions have changed since GoldSource, some puzzles have been removed and replaced with different ones (Mostly it appears for the sake of the older puzzles not fitting with the updated visuals) and the overall experience is revamped. I actually felt sorry for one of the Guards at one point into the storyline, which baffled me seeing as how many times I've given Half Life a run through.

TL;DR To summarize without any more rambling, Black Mesa is worth paying for, and I cannot wait for the release of Xen to complete the game.
