Design-a-Troop Project!

Hi Everyone!

Thanks to a great community suggestion over the weekend, we've decided to do something a little unusual for one of our upcoming troops... we're going to let YOU design it!

Here's what you need to know:

One of our forum regulars, Jainus, has very kindly agreed to manage the whole process for us (it was his idea after all), which is great for everyone, because it leaves us more time to work on the game!

Jainus has kicked off the thread, which is in the Community Content area of the web forums here: http://community.gemsofwar.com/t/design-a-troop-project-part-1-poll-1-is-live/7718

More details:
We will be keeping a watch on the whole process, for both balance & technical & copyright issues. We DO reserve the right to change some stuff, but it will be mostly because our tech might not allow certain traits/spells to be created (our system isn't infinitely flexible, unfortunately).

The troop will be Legendary, so you'll be creating not just a troop and a spell, but also a Legendary Trait!

When the initial design is done, it will go out to art, and you'll get to see the various art iterations as they come in.

And finally we'll make the troop available to everybody when it's done in a Glory-Reward pack, along with some matching traitstones.

The whole process might take a while (art itself can be slow, and changes to tech can be even slower!) but it'll be a nice insight into the design process for everyone.

So head on over to the forums and start voting!

Best,

-GoW Team

* Tier Rewards can be collected once when you’ve reached a new tier level.
* Rank Rewards given at the end of an event are based on what rank you were when the event ended.

Casual:
* Allows you choose between 3 opponents for a fun battle that does not affect PvP points or ranking.
* Casual is played at your currently-selected difficulty.
* Casual battles have a slightly reduced reward compared to Ranked battles.

Stats:
* Shows various stats for your PvP Career including:
* Current Tier and rewards for each Tier.
* Current Rank and rewards for with week’s event.
* Current Wins and Losses for Invades and Defenses.
* Favorite Troop for invading.

* The Battle Log displays all of your recent battles (invades and defenses), whether you won or lost, and how long ago the battle was.

Leaderboards:
* Leaderboards show both your current rank as well as the top 100 players in the current weekly event.

Summoning Improvements
* Summoning is no longer limited to a cap of level 15 for troops.
* Summoned troops are now limited by what level you have raised that troop to.
* Summoned troops now gain any team bonuses earned at the start of battle (from Troop type or Kingdom bonuses).
* Summoned troops come in with any trait you have unlocked on the troop.
* Summoning changes do not apply to Arena.

Hero Profiles
* We’ve added a new social feature to the game: Hero Profiles.
* Hero Profiles allow you to view various information about another player in the game.
* You are able to use the Hero Profile to invite players to your guild or play in a friendly battle.
* Friendly battles do not give out rewards.
* You can access the new Hero Profile menu by tapping on a player’s name in chat or viewing it in the PVP Menus (either from the Leaderboard or Battle Log menus).

New Kingdom
* Glacial Peaks has appeared on the map to unlock.
* New troops (including 2 new legendary troops) have been added to chests.

The single player side of this game is okay. However, the multiplayer becomes more pay-to-win with each expansion.

This is how all the new games should be. It is not a pay-to-win like a lot of people have claimed. It is simply a pay-to-progress faster. There are no cards, equipments, or skills that only people who pay can get. And there are multiple ways to gems to be able to get armors and high level trait stones that seems like you have to pay for them. Yes your progress will be a lot slower than someone who paid, but you'll know that you earned it.

Also I've seen a lot of people complaining about the new pvp system they introduced. But really, I think it's great. I felt like the old pvp system was way too easy and was getting a little bored with it. I haven't spend a single cent on this game and I'm still 170 wins and 4 losses with pvp. The amount of money and items you can gain per week has been greatly incresed. It might seem intimidating playing against someone who has more than double your attack, life, and armor, but that doesn't matter if they rarely ever get the chance to attack. The strength of your team is more important than the strength of your cards.

The game will seem very difficult at first, when you're just starting out. Your team won't be that balanced, and all your stats will be super low. But if you just keep playing your team will continually get stronger, and you'll get keep getting further. This is great game, and they are constantly updating it with new cards and features. Don't give up on it.

Your standard Bejeweled type game with a twist. It's easy to pick up and play for a short break, but hard to put down. Highly recommended.

It's Puzzle Quest but with Free-to-Play mechanics that are not fun. Expect slowed progression, a throw-away narrative, and design aimed at your wallet and not fun.

I don't have a problem with all F2P games; some of them do it well and have small offerings that are aesthetic and don't break the main title, but this isn't one of them. It is definitely pay-to-win in PvP and pay-to-have-fun in PvE. I'd hoped that the Puzzle Quest folks had more integrity than this.

My two fav types of games are match 3 and ARPG games. This is an awesome combination of the two. I really enjoy this game. I play it both casually and seriously depending on time available. I recommend this game to anyone who enjoy these two types of games and for those who play both seriously and casually. Come try this game out and enjoy.

I love this game. It's an attack match three. Most match threes can become tedious overtime, but this game really has a diversity that keeps me hooked. I even play it on multiple platforms.

Unlike most attack match three games, building the strongest team isn't just about leveling up. I recently decided to switch around my teams and went from a team with attack power over 4,000 to one under 3,000, but was doing better just because the team worked better together.

You can join a guild which allows you to connect with other players, but also to increase your daily earnings. The other thing that keeps it fresh for me, is if I ever get bored of battling, I can just relax and play a treasure map which is all about making big matches to earn gold, glory, keys, and traitstones. There's no way to lose your rewards so it really is stress free and a nice break.

Call this the Counter review. Countering a lot of the negative reviews here for 2.0. I didn't play the previous build, so I don't have an axe to grind. I'm not really invested in the game, so I don't care if it's different than it was before. There are lots of reviews here from players who feel wronged by the game's changes. Since those changes didn't impact me, I'm just going to talk about the game as it is and the experience of playing 2.0.

I played Puzzle Quest 1 and 2 a lot. And several of the other Puzzle-type games from this and other publishers. And while I really enjoyed the earlier titles, after awhile they just got boring. They were slow and it was more fun to go play Diablo or something else with a little excitement to it.

So I'm very happy to report that this game is fast. The animations are fast, the tile moves are fast, the tutorial is fast, the interface is fast. But at the same time, you're totally in control of the speed. If you like to spend time stratgezing before making a match, you can. If you just like to play oh-what-thehell and make matches as fast as possible, you can.

There was a certain amount of grinding in the other games and a storyline to follow. There is here, too, but much more rewarding and no where near as tedious. Every match gives you something.

When the game opens, after a 3-step tutorial, you'll end up with a few important things. Your first town, your first troop cards, your first rewards, which consist of some chest keys, some soul stones and some gold. You can spend the gold leveling your town, which will give you more daily gold or you can spend the gold in other ways to improve your game. The keys you use to open chests that give you more souls, cards and trait stones. I got an epic troop card from my second chest.

I took that epic card and upgraded it with my soul stones. I then put it on my team (not sure why they call your troops a team, but whatever). I equipped my hero with a new weapon, added a few common troop cards I received in my other chests and started on my first town's quest.

Pretty soon I had enough gold to buy another town, which contained another quest string. I now have four towns, each with their own separate quest string. I received an epic troop card for completion of the first town's quest line, upgraded that and started playing PvP.

I really wish they had not named it PvP, even though it is, it isn't. One reason I wish they had not is because a lot of players have negative views of PvP, since it often engenders a toxic community, loss is often ridiculed and the pressure to compete leads players to make ill-informed or just plain poor decisions regarding their real life money. Another reason I wish they had not named it PvP is that you actually don't play another person. You play against the AI, which is using the other person's team (of cards, like yours).

So, I gave it a whirl and it turned out to be no different than playing the quest line or the PvE challenges. The game is exactly the same. You simply get some different rewards and rank up, which gives you more rewards, gold and soul stones, to improve your game. There's nothing horrible about it. No one makes funny noises or calls you names. Because there isn't anyone there. The AI loses gracefully or wins gracefully and you move on.

Pros:

Fun graphics
Plenty of PvE
Fast gameplay
Sense of advancement
Enjoyable PvP
Classes as you level up
Troop card animations
Troop card improvements (leveling, new traits, ascend in rank)

Cons:
No cursor tooltips
No explanation of the icons of which there are a great many on cards, on character sheet, on the UI, etc., etc.

The Cash Shop:
Will give you an advantage on how fast you level, acquire gold and other in-game currency. Whether you can parlay this into a top spot on the leaderboards depends on whether you have a good, basic strategy to begin with.

Rating: 8/10

Quite enjoyable and fast-paced. Great way to spend a few hours.

You can play this as a repetitive PvE game or a pay-to-win PvP game that still feels like PvE. Either way, it has a compelling set of core rules but lacks enough confidence to let them shine; it's buried in a 5-pronged progression system that discourages experimentation. It's an acceptable way to kill time on your phone but isn't worth any more than that.

I wanted to like this game. Really I did. I mean, it's basically Puzzle Quest, and I LOVE puzzle quest. For a free game, there is a lot of content to it, from quests, to items, challenges, troops for your party, and so on. I should love this game.

Then I ran out of coins, and could no longer play the game.

To elaborate, at the start of the game, you're given a few hundred coins. These aren't used to buy better equipment or level up your soldiers, (as far as I am aware, I may just not have gotten that far yet) they're the currency that lets you play the game at all.
Yes, your kingdom generates a certain number of coins per hour I believe (up to 500 per day max to start) and quests earn you a meager amount, (most I've gotten so far was 9) but every single challenge and quest takes about 50 coins to play.

The cash shop I don't mind. It's a free game, and they need to make money to stay in business. I understand that part.
But I will never understand game mechanics that actually prevent you from playing the game. Any desire I might have for potentially spending money on the shinies is killed by the fact that I just plain can't play the game until a set period of time passes.
