“Screencheat is the Mario Kart of first person shooters and I absolutely mean that as a compliment”
Kotaku

“Easy going in tone but frantic and stressful by nature, Screencheat seizes on a single novel idea and builds an enjoyable couch shooter around it.”
7.8 – PC Gamer

“Glancing at someone else’s screen and knowing exactly where they are would be nigh-on impossible in most shooters, but Samurai Punk combats this through some smart level design.”

About This Game

Screencheat is the ridiculous split-screen shooter where everyone is invisible so you have to “screencheat” (Screencheat - verb: to look at your opponent’s screens. “Stop screencheating you cheater!”). Master a wide variety of one-hit kill weapons including a blunderbuss, a car engine that shoots bouncing plasma balls and a teddy bear loaded with explosives. Train your skills in the solo time trials then engage in fast and frantic combat with up to eight players locally on the couch or online. With colourful maps, unique modes and a huge number of customisation options including wacky mutators, Screencheat is the ultimate party FPS.

Ranging from the dependable Blunderbuss to the heroic Hobby Horse to the completely crazy Chefolet; a car engine that fires ricocheting energy balls, all are designed to deliver deadly satisfaction. Each weapon comes with its own unique advantages and disadvantages, encouraging wildly different play styles. These include not only the way a weapon shoots but also the 'tells' the weapon leaves such as the smoke from the blunderbuss or the trail of fire behind the Hobby Horse.

From traditional favourites such as Deathmatch to the completely unique Murder Mystery that challenges you to find and frag your specific target with a specific weapon. Play in teams or all against all. Challenge up to seven of your mates on the couch or online or a combination of both, the game is always split screen whether you are on or offline. When your friends aren't around, train your skills and learn the maps in the solo time trials or play against AI bots.

In the spirit of the best arena shooters you’ll spend time traversing 11 maps via air vents and trampolines until you’ve acquired your target and fragged them accordingly. Each map is designed with colour-coded areas as well as plentiful landmarks such as statues, paintings and furniture that allow you to quickly locate other players without being able to actually see them.

Inspired by games like Towerfall we've provided players with a highly granular level of customisation to play the game the way they want to. Choose which weapons you'll allow, how and when they can be swapped or reloaded, apply time limits, adjust the victory conditions, penalties and more. To really mix it up stack on some Mutators such as slow mode, low gravity or flappy jump.

I'd want to recommend this game, but I'm just too disappointed. I still play it once in a while, and maybe you should try it. But the game does not hold up or live to the promise of "goldeneye/halo with mandatory screencheating".

I don't want to just bash this game, as it's fast easy fun every now and then.

Positives:
+ General idea. I played a lot 4 player splitscreen Halo:CE in my teens. First we played with "screencheating enabled". You could tell who took a sniper and where he is looking at. Then we moved to splitting the 32 inch tv with a blanket so only teammate is visible, but you could still cheat by listening... And I kinda miss those days.

+ Color coding the areas. The game divides maps to four or more areas with distinct colored walls and floor. So you can see if the player is in blue area, red/yellow cross or something similar.

+ Weapon diversity. There are melee weapons, wallhacking weapons, grenade launcher, etc. with quite a different feel and gameplay.

So sounds great, right? Well... here are where the game falls apart and differs from what my expectations were:

- Every single weapon is a one shot kill. The weapon balance is... well, there is none. With some weapons, you can just spam, with some you just hope to get lucky, with some you can almost never hit (almost 0 kills with wallhacker) and the basic blunderbuss is really easy to hit from close to moderate distances

- You can start with any weapon. But only one. So you don't want to use situational weapons, or you change weapons just to get away from the game feeling "samey". There are no ammo either, so you don't really have any reason to go for the candelight melee weapon (hobby horse is still cool).

- The last two problems create another: There are no pickups. No armor, no weapons, no health, no powerups - Which means that in the basic game modes, there are no areas the players would pursue and where players would regularly meet. Which also means no one camps - and the screencheating is perfect counter for camping.

- The game is almost as fast as Quake III... how on earth should you keep track of more than one player? You peek upper player screen, quickly check your own, and when you check your opponents screen again, he is on the other side of the map.

Can you spot the problem? The game is too fast, without any chokepoints on maps and all weapons being one hit kill. Poeple just keep running from place to place, if they can see even a hint of right color on the opponents screen, shoot and pray the one shot weapon will hit.

If you are looking for something like avoiding proximity bombs you saw your peer to use, lure your opponent to use his last bullet while he's camping and you can see him pointing the corner, or shooting your pal through the floor while trying to get to the overpowered sniper rifle (which spawns only for one player to use)...

Screencheat is not that game, and that is a real shame.

One of the most innovative games I've ever managed to play.
UK mode will make you hate life.
The infinity loop map will probably make you throw up if you're wearing VR.
If you play with the Devs... They will kick you in the butt.

If you used to play couch coop shooters (goldeneye, TimeSplitters, MoH, Nightfire, etc), and enjoyed it, I would highly recommend this game.

Each weapon is unique; there's even one that allows you to shoot through walls! (Perfect Dark, anybody?)

If you're not good at memorizing maps or glancing at more than one screen at a time, I wouldn't recommend this game to you.

It is an utter shame to see a rather fun game have next to no player base. I would really recommend it though it's probably better to play with a freind rather than rely on public games

Wonderful fun! Well put together game (with its share of bugs, try flying around with flappy jump on multi-layered maps and you'll see what I mean) and an aweseome concept. Great fun for local multiplayer or online with friends. Online is nice & stable too.

This game holds great promise, and is a new concept that has never really been tried before. It's really a shame that there are so many games like this, with awesome gameplay, that all have the same problem: not enough players. I would VERY much recommend buying this game (and getting your friends that play fps to buy it), as not only will you be helping to solve this problem, but not get called out for screencheating!

This is by far one of the most fun and clever games I've ever played. It's an amazing concept to put in to a video game along with an awesome way to make sure nobody takes advantage of the invisibility feature (Color-coding for certain parts of each map). There's a variety of weapons which help to make the game interesting along with many maps and gamemodes to explore. I personally love the graphics which helps to make the gameplay experience even better. 10/10
