Greetings Commanders!

Our next update coming later this month will introduce you to new enemies, new missions, and a new progression and rank system. Get ready to put your habitats to the test!

New Enemies - Vampires, Saws, and Breakers, oh my!

The world of Habitat is going to get much more dangerous. In addition to more mobile enemy stations that can hunt you down or run away in combat, you’ll also have to face booster-powered mobile drills and saws, minelayers, and exploders.

Nanomachines, too, have gotten more varied, with the ability to sap resources, throw space junk, and break apart your Habitat’s connectors.

Progression System - Keeping it Fair!

Worried about all the new threats? Fear not. You won’t have to face the worst baddies right away - you’ll level up as you complete missions and the difficulty will ramp up along with your level - as will your ability to grow your habitat.

Completing missions will now earn you experience points toward leveling up your habitat, increasing the max size of your station, number of engineers, and base amounts of production.

Special Deliveries - From Earth with Love!

We’re also introducing a preview of the upcoming Earth Delivery System that will allow you to order up space junk from Earth. Rockets and new command modules can be ordered up for an Omni cost. We’ll introduce more junk types in a future update through an ordering interface in the HAL, but right now we’re bringing you the tools to get you in fighting shape quickly!

We’ll have a full list of all the changes when we release the update, you can expect plenty of bug fixes and tweaks along with these new features! We’re looking forward to bringing it to you!

Update .30 is now Live!

New Features

* Save and Load your Habitat progress. Save Game and Load Game options are now in the Settings screen in-game, and Load Game is an option on the Main Menu and upon player death.


To save in-game, hit ESCAPE or click the Settings button at the bottom-left, and choose Save Game. You can load a saved game from the Main Menu, Settings Menu, or upon the death of your Habitat HQ unit.

The save and load system currently saves the following data: Your habitat configurations and positions, resource counts, and number of engineers. When loading a save game, you will notice that the “world” of loose space junk will have changed around you. In addition, you will be given a new mission upon loading.

If you save your game with any user-generated Junk Workshop content as part of your habitat, then delete that content from Junk Workshop, loading your save game file will not work properly.

The save-game file is in plaintext JSON format. It is not encrypted and can be shared with others or modified (at your own risk! be sure to make a safe copy).

Locations of save files:
PC: Users\<You>\AppData\LocalLow\4gency\Habitat_EarlyAccess_\HabitatSaves
MAC: <Your User Folder>/Library/Caches/unity.4gency.Habitat (Early Access)/HabitatSaves

More data will be saved in future versions including mission progression!

* Random missions. Take on space stations and nano machine clouds for rewards at random points along the map.


There are two types of missions in this first version: Station hunting and nano cloud defense. They will be picked at random. Once a mission is completed, a new one will start in 30 seconds.

Click on the mission tasks in the list in the top-left to zoom your camera to the target in order to aid in navigation.

Be sure to collect the reward at the end of the mission to fully complete the mission.

Many more mission types will be unlocked as we continue development.

* Tutorial mission. Learn the basics about building, flying, and fighting in orbit!


If you’re a first time player you’ll be asked if you want to play the tutorial upon clicking Start Game. If you say No, you won’t be asked again.

You can access the tutorial at any time through the Tutorial option on the main menu.

This tutorial covers only the most basic operations. Deeper tutorial concepts will be covered as we continue development.

* Brand-new user interface for habitat control - major rework of buttons, resource counts, and more


A lot has moved around to make way for the mission list and in order to give a more responsive feel to the game’s controls.

You’ll find most of your controls along the bottom-left corner. Resource counts are now in the top-left.

Keyboard controls remain unchanged.

Features We Missed

* Fog of war - this one didn’t make the cut for the v0.30 update, falling behind save, missions, and the tutorial system. As it can dramatically impact usability and gameplay, we want to be sure it’s up to scratch before unveiling it, and it wasn’t ready for primetime. Stay tuned!

Smaller Features and Fixes

* Selecting “Build Connector” mode no longer makes projectiles disappear
* Turret angles no longer “nudge” accidentally when selected in HAL

Habitat is a successfully funded Kickstarter game from indie developer 4gency. It is a strategic space survival game where you have to build and manage the future homes of humanity from orbital debris that you find in space junkyards surrounding Earth’s orbit.

Leading your team of engineers, you will have to build and fly your space stations in a zero gravity setting, mastering physics driven flight simulation to explore the space around you. In order to thrive and grow you have to manage your population and their environment. In the event of a threat get creative and turn your space stations into deadly weapons using pieces of debris you pick up such as rockets, lasers and particle accelerators to fight and ultimately survive against attacks from the enemy. This is a space survival game where crisis is guaranteed and your only chance for survival is to be creative and decisive in the face of disaster.

Key Alpha Features

This game is good fun for about half an hour - you can build a wacky ship and mess around with fun weapons but that's more or less it. The flight is really difficult, though made a little easier by proper booster placement and hotkey assignment. Maybe some kind of inertial dampening block would be handy to stabilise your ship. (Edit - an "emergency full stop" isn't really inertial dampening...)

As far as the combat goes, you clumsily maneuver yourself into a position where you MIGHT be able to attack a station and then fire your lasers - the station is dead more or less immediately without putting up a fight. You then realise your next target isn't that far away, were it not for the difficulty in getting that short distance - you will spin all the way around at least 2 or 3 times. Once you're there, same story. There isn't much incentive to build beyond your initial working ship - maybe an engineer limit based on habitat pods would be more of an incentive.

Oh yes, the ship will also bump into nothing, causing a change in trajectory, when you had only just got it pointing the way you wanted.

Don't get me wrong, it's fun and it has a fair amount of potential but at £11 the price is much too high for a game which offers little at this stage and has no save feature.

EDIT: It's worth pointing out that by now this review is fairly old and the game will continue to develop with time. I had felt that at the time my review was fair but should have been taken with a pinch of salt because I am more than aware of how games in alpha are. It is also worth keeping in mind that with early access the old "alpha/beta" defining lines are somewhat blurred and "it's an alpha" is not a blanket excuse for exclusion of basic features. This game is fun, keep an eye on it - but be aware of the limits of early development.

This has the potential to be a pretty jolly KSP.
I guess Unity must make it really easy to connect things to each other with intergalactic space ropes, or else there wouldn't be a bazillion people making games like this.
Unfortunately this one too so far suffers from the fact that the performance of the default objects Unity provides you with is rather absymal by the time you hook up dozens of moving objects together. If the developer(s) can fix this, this could become something great. If they can't, it'll just be unplayable crap until we get single-threaded supercomputers in the year 2192.

Really good for a first release, but see above caveat.

*NOTE: This is an Early Access review meaning it will be a lot shorter than a normal review but will still explain what I thought about it. A full review will be published once Habitat has released. By the way, I have a lot more hours than it says, it just wouldn't calculate any of the time for me while it wasn't on the Steam Store.

In its simplest terms it is a strategic space survival game. It is being developed by 4gency and being published by Versus Evil. It's available on Steam's Early Access - as stated above - for $14.99.

Habitat was one of my most anticipated indie games of 2014 when I first saw the Kickstarter. From then I followed it to where it is today. I was able to have a review copy to review. Saying that, there were of course some bugs that have been squashed out, but none of the bugs prevent it from being playable.

Habitat feels like a space sandbox where you can literally make whatever you want with the space debris orbiting around Earth. That includes thrusters, boosters, dinosaur heads, Statue of Liberty heads, anything that's there you can add. This gives players total freedom on what they want their ship to look like. For me; I put the dinosaur head on the top of my rocket ship, with boosters on either side and a controllable booster near the top.

The controls are very easy to learn and do not feel clunky. Graphics are alright, but nothing spectacular, as they aren't the focus of this game. The focus is to have fun building a space ship that YOU made as well as fighting various enemies in the game. Can't wait to see what some of the people's ships look like as well as hoping for Steam Workshop!

This game is great BUT it has just been released as Early Access. A major problem at this moment is the lack of ability to save (there isn't any) The game itself is quiet fun. Combine space debris together to make a working space station capable of destroying enemy stations. Wide variety of weapons was a nice touch, laser/rockets/tanks/cannons etc.

The controls were fun after getting use to them. WASD moves the cam and boosters are used to move the station. Clicking (or hotkeying) to activate items (like booster rockets or weapons) adds to your control over the surroundings. Ontop of that you have manual thrusters you can control with the arrow keys. The combination is very tricky to get use to but as I said, once I got use to them it was fun.

Overall I would have to recommend this game because it is very fun and will surely be made even better as the early release goes forward.
