Hemisphere Games is a Canadian developer company that released Osmos back in 2009. They give you the opportunity to control a... well... cell. You need to find other cells that are smaller than you so that you can absorb them and grow bigger. This concept, of course, also means that you need to avoid bigger cells until you are big enough to absorb those, as well. If I remember correctly the criterion on each level is always to become quite big (not necessarily to absorb all the cells on the map).

I like how you need to proper yourself ahead to gain momentum - in the process you are losing matter so you cannot really do this forever as you are gradually becoming smaller. Patience is a virtue!

There are several levels and all are part of 3 major zones - each require you to follow a different playstyle and some of the later levels can be pretty challenging.

The game has an excellent soundtrack full of ambient tracks. They accompany this unique gameplay perfectly. I believe Osmos is one of those indie games that is a must-have.

You remember the first evolution stage in Spore? Someone decided to make a full game out of that and it surprisingly ended up being pretty good.
You start off as a little cell in a large map and grow by absorbing other cells, but to do that you will have to move, which costs a bit of your own cell, depending on your current size. Continue to grow until the game says "all right, that's enough, you can move on to the next one now.". And that's about it. There's a couple of little gimmicks here and there and different gravity every now and then, but that's about it. Critics often say that Osmos is a very relaxing and immersive game. Immersive, yes. Relaxing? Hell no. Once you get to the harder stages, the game starts getting pretty frustrating and relies on some luck under certain circumstances. During some of the last stages, I was moving myself very carefully, hoping to god that I wouldn't get killed by one of the larger cells that was barely a pixel away from me. So yeah, claiming the game's relaxing is a lie to the biggest degree.
As for the presentation, I like it. All the cells look great and filled with little details when looked at from up close, but as for the backgrounds, they're basically non-existant. Not that I have a problem with it, considering you're going to focus on the cells for 99,98% of the game.
If there's one thing that Osmos is known for, though, it's without a doubt the music. The OST's been praised for being, well... good. And in this case, I can't deny the soundtrack's pretty damn good. (even though it really doesn't fit in with the player desperately hoping things don't go horribly wrong every stage)
Overall, Osmos is pretty fun, but for 10 bucks, I can't recommend it at that price, but if you can find it on a sale, I'd definately recommend it in that case.

I've seen so many strategy games with a similar objetive: you play as a floating entity, and absorb things surrounding you to become larger. However, this game inarguably stands out from the others. Osmos whisks away the competition with a refreshing experience that will leave you challenged yet relaxed. It's minimalism done right: simple, yet polished and elegant. What more can you ask from a game like this?


Oh, and for someone like me who is constantly anxious, finding a semi-relaxing video game that isn't boring is difficult. Soooo, thumbs up!


(Side Note: I got this game as part of a recent Humble Bundle, but I definitely think it would be worth purchasing for the full price.)

This game is very casual, rules are very simple, and the physics are straightforward. Some very interesting puzzles from some very simple rules.

On the earliest levels it's more of a puzzle, but later it becomes clear. This _is_ what Spore _should_ have made the first primordial life level as. This plays perfectly - but it's more challenging than Spore could afford to make their game (because they were making a game targetted at 5 year olds - but marketted to adults - and Will Wright no more pizza for you, but I digress).

Because you're ejecting your own body weight in order to move, the game is seeing whether it's worth sacrificing size for speed in order to eat other bubbles, and also to avoid bubbles that are big enough to eat you.

The amount of time I have in this game is minimal, but it's been such a great experience so far...so I decided to write this review right away! With the physics of propulsion, and the fundamental aspect of Predator vs Prey and the food chain, this game is great for getting kids engaged with basic physics. As a teenager however, I thoroughly enjoyed this game as I was introduced to new vocabulary such as 'biophobe' and more. There is seemingly no story-line (which is not a bad thing in this case). I absolutely love this game and recommend it to everyone! At first, this did not seem like my kind of game, but venturing further, I can say that I absolutely love this game.

You're a small blob, you want to absorb smaller blobs to become bigger. This lets you eat bigger blobs. But to move you have to spit small blobs behind you! This is pretty much the entire game in a nutshell. It's a great game for those who want something a little more relaxing.

Beautiful, simple, sweet, great soundscape. I seriously doubt you'll be dissapointed with this one. It does have a short lifespan, but you'll enjoy the trip (kinda like Portal 2, but more "ethereal"). Worth the money!

OK, everyone knows the game spore right? Right. Well my favorite part of that game was the cell stage. This is like the cell stage of spore but it never ends. Very fun game, albeit difficult but very fun. I recommend it to anyone who can relate to this review.

This game is amazing. It's like we are a time traveler who journeyed back in time to witness the origins of our Solar System from the gas and dust between the stars. You play with a small comet from the interstellar cloud where you and other clumps of matter are gravitating towards the center. Smaller peripheral clumps colide and become planets.

Long ago, this kind of natural selection is what happened to our own Solar System. The highly elliptical orbits tended to collide and be destroyed. The planets with circular orbits tended to survive. If events in those billions of small cosmic collisions were have been even a little different the Earth would have never have formed and some other planet at some other distance would be around. We owe the existance of our world to random collisions in a long vanished cloud, and I owe the hours of fun that I invested in this game, to the developers. 10/10

Short Verdict: Osmos is a physics game where you control a sphere (some kind of cell? I'm not 100% sure if it's in space or in a microscopic environment) in order to eat the smaller ones so you can grow. Let's say I enjoyed this game for about 10 stages, then I kept going just because of the achievements. But it got harder and harder and even harder, until the point I was stuck for 3 hours on the same stage and it was wise to just rage quit. In the end, despite its qualities, it wasn't fun to play. Whoever tagged this as "Relaxing" definitely haven't played enough.

Pros:
  • I think it's safe to say its physics aspects are spot-on: gravity, orbits, momentum, action and reaction etc.
  • Graphics are beautiful in a simplistic, clean way
  • There's a great variety of levels--some rely more on skills and agility, others are more focused on puzzle and strategy
  • Being able to play procedurally generated versions of a level you're having trouble with is a great feature that might help you move on

Cons:
  • The speed flow was the most annoying thing to me. Some levels get waaaaay too slow, even on the fastest speed. It's even more irritating when you're retrying a level for the 213048th time.
  • Controls aren't as intuitive as one would hope--it gets better with practice, but it remains relatively weird
  • The BGM used could be nice in a different context, but when you're on a stage for 10 minutes, for the 213048th time, those interesting noises are just obnoxious (even though it's quality music).
  • Moves way too fast from easy to insanely hard
  • Made me actually dizzy and I caught myself biting my nails after many, many, many years--I'm serious! Osmos is anything but relaxing!

Bought on / for: Humble Mozilla Bundle by Humble Bundle for an average of US$ 0.20 (R$ 0.50). Can't say I feel bad for spending that money on this game, since it was fun for a while, but I wouldn't deliberately spend any money on it had I known what I do now.

很早就听说过了这个游戏,一直想秒,但是一直都没等到时机。后来,在那个捐款拿Humble Indle Bundle 3号包后,前几天闲得没事,再去看看;却意外的发现人家直接给又送了Humble Indle Bundle 2号包。所以就这样拿到星噬了,同时,时空幻境也白浪费钱买了。
是的,以前想秒是因为以为这个游戏简单的很,估计也就是1天的功夫10小时就把游戏给过了,没想到,开始确实很简单,到了力量星区,我勒个巢,有引力星,各种引力线搞的非常抓狂,最后这游戏确实也是跟先前估计的差不多,用了16.8小时通的,3天时间(中间又有别的事耽误了一晚上),我敢说其中8小时都磨在最后的引力星区的几个关卡上。最难的就是给你摆几个引力星,模拟的跟太阳系似的,结果才给你一点点点星球,想要变大都很难,结果目标还得是把全部的引力星给吞噬掉。忘了说游戏规则了,很简单,就是根据各种物理定律,作用力反作用力,动能动量守恒,引力星区是各种万有引力和离心力向心力,万有引力作向心力啥的。开始你是个小星球,把比你小的星球吃掉,你能变大一点,同样,比你大的星球要是碰到你,你就被吃了。就靠这么两条简单的规则,一个游戏主文件才1.5M。开始我以为这游戏和真菌世界、宇宙战争联盟啥的差不多,没想到不一样。那俩是星球/细胞上出兵打别的星球,这个是直接用星球吃别的星球,连兵都省了。除了引力星区,其他关卡还是玩的很欢乐的,但是到了引力星区,又得克服引力又得变大,而且有些关还有边界,碰到宇宙边界你就消亡了。不过玩完以后真是对整个宇宙系统印象非常深刻了,太阳变大会怎样,变小会怎样,黑洞是咋出来的,等引力星区全玩完,自然全了解了。
总评:开始很欢乐,最后太难太难,过不了的人会产生阴影,过了的人那一瞬间就感觉到突然解脱了,但是再也不想玩这游戏了。画面太黑暗,白天玩看不太清。

First half of the game is really good, if you like calm and tranquilizing games. You can play this while stoned. :D

Second half is utterly frustrating and the cause of the heap of antidepressants prescriptions in this land. xD
