Announcing Endless Legend: Tempest & closed beta contest

Hey guys and gals!

We've been hinting at it for a pretty long time now, from subtle hints in our Meet the Team blogs to our answers around the forum, with tote bags labelled Endless Legend: Tempest mysteriously making an appearance during our Beer2Gether at Gamescom. The cat's finally out of the bag: Endless Legend's fourth expansion will be Tempest, focused around control of the seas of Auriga!

This expansion will introduce the Morgawr, an aquatic-based Major Faction specialized in naval warfare and manipulation of other creatures. Factions will now be able to fight for dominance of the oceans through the control of sea fortresses, although they will have to wrestle these from the grasp of the Fomorians, a new Minor Faction.

Bring your daughter to work is always a big success with the Morgawr.

Naval Warfare: Naval battles for everyone! You will be able to battle on the seas. All seaborne units can instigate and reinforce sea battles. Exotic mechanics and tile effects spice up this new type of battle!

Ocean Control with Weather System: Arcane structures have emerged from beneath the waves: these Endless relics provide strategic and luxury resources as well as other bonuses to the empire able to control them. To do so, their mysterious guardians must be parlayed with or defeated in battle. The same guardians will patrol “wild” ocean regions, making them a lot less safe to cross without a convoy. Expect clouds, rain and storms to appear on your map.

Sea Fortresses and Minor Faction FomoriansNew generated ocean regions, including a Sea Fortress, offer strategic locations in the water for players to battle it out. Anywhere from zero to three fortresses are located in each ocean region, so expect more in oceans that are more strategically pivotal, between islands or continents.

About This Game

Create your own Legend

Another sunrise, another day of toil. Food must be grown, industries built, science and magic advanced, and wealth collected. Urgency drives these simple efforts, however, for your planet holds a history of unexplained apocalypse, and the winter you just survived was the worst on record. A fact that has also been true for the previous five.

As you discover the lost secrets of your world and the mysteries of the legends and ruins that exist as much in reality as in rumor, you will come to see that you are not alone. Other peoples also struggle to survive, to grow, and perhaps even to conquer.

You have a city, a loyal populace, and a few troops; your power and magic should be sufficient to keep them alive. But beyond that, nothing is certain… Where will you go, what will you find, and how will you react? Will your trail be one of roses, or of blood?

Explore fantastic lands.

  • Lead one of eight civilizations each with a unique gameplay style and storyline.
  • Survive through cold dark seasons that drive Auriga to its end. Will it also be yours?
  • Experience an endless replayability with randomly generated worlds and quests.
  • Set the size, shape, topography and more... to create your own world to discover.

Expand beyond the unknown.

  • Conquer, build and develop villages into feared fortresses or wonderful cities.

China, it's time to stop.

Oh, and this game is amazing, can't wait for the new expansion. If you're a fan of 4X Civ-style games, then go and buy this. Or read some more informative reviews by people who have more free time than me and go buy it afterwards =)

Visually the game is stunning, the art work and the 3D rendering is exceptional. Each and every major faction is different from one another, and this really changes the way you play, and interact with the other factions and the fictional world of Auriga. Each major faction throughout the game, follows a compelling interactive questline which is followed throughout each game. The game has a rich lore, linking this game with Amplitude's other games, Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless. The lore, coupled with the refreshing mechanics, and all of the effort Amplitude has put into this game make this a fantastic game. The game offers several new variations on the traditional 4x formula. Instead of building a city anywhere, the player can build only one city per region, which means initial placement of cities is especially important. Instead of limiting cities to a certain size on the strategic map, as in Civ, this game allows one to expand the physical boundaries of cities. Endless Legend has an unusual tech design, instead of following one tree, the player has some freedom to skip techs to progress from one age to the next, which promises more replayability. Endless Legend is, without doubt, one of the deepest and most inspired 4x turn based fantasy games I have had the pleasure of playing.

Tough game to win. I suggest reading through some of the tutorials, and walk throughs of other players when just starting out. As good or better than Endless Space. Very complex, and hard to master any aspect of the game. To me this means hundreds of hours trying to learn how to dominate. Which means, I'll likely be playing this for months/years to come.

On paper this game sounds like a dream come true. Civilization with heroes, quests and a great interface. The reality is that it's mostly half realized. Boring quests that are often too tedious for me to invest in. The heroes perk tree only really matters early in the game. But the interface is pretty good I'll give it that.

I guess what really irks me is that I find the end game cities to be too OP. The end game can be summed up by 1 word: stalemate. You can't really lose and you can't really win. There's no super weapons to turn the tide. You just have armies of probably low level units that have no chance in gaining any ground at all.

If you like playing a 4x RTS that requires an aggressive expansion strategy and games only last a few hours then this game is probably for you. Otherwise, if you like a 4x RTS that lasts for days/weeks/months (dare I say years?) and has interesting end game just go classic and get Civ or maybe Sins of a Solar Empire if you're into that.

I have no idea why the recent reviews on this game say mixed. I read that its because of some problem with a chinese language conversion mod. However when I saw that I felt the need to come and defend this game with a positive review. Buy this. PLay this. Watch some Let's Plays on YouTube beforehand though so you're not so overwhelmed.

There are too much issues in the balancing to be considered a good 4X game.

Tech tree is not right- certain technologies are way more interesting than others despite being at the same cost;
the armor custom of units is pointless in terms of strategic depth as all armours give the same pool of stats (there is only a level upgrade but it's not really a custom thing, having an upgrade button on your unit would do exactly the same as putting one by one all the small pieces of armour on the unit)
And the battle aspect is frankly bad designed.

Bad balancing which also affects the game interest in general, you have one major strategy (the aggressive one) which will win against the poor AI every time at every levels of difficulty.

This game is the absolute perfect example of why putting a tone of battle and economic variables and resources does not translate into more strategic depth, it's just useless complexity... because at the end of the day one brainless strat beats the AI all the time.

This is not the definition of smart strategic game design.

Just here to balance out the review score. Endless Legend should by no means rates a 47%. And something like "Don't recommend because no Chinese version." What is this arrogant farce?

The overall aesthetics of EL is definitely amazing to say the least. The futuristic fantasy style design fits so well with the setting. The graphics have a very shrewd and modern fashion, if you are not a retro sucker then you should be absolutely satisfied with them. Hell, this game looks way better to me than the preview screenshots of Civ 6. The music is among the best game soundtracks I have ever listened to. The composer Fly By No really melded different styles of music into it, every time I open the game, the main menu track "Song of Auriga" always gives me goosebumps. Good music adds depth to a game, and for EL this is definitely the case.

The gameplay is pretty good imo. The factions are very distinct, each favoring one or two specific victory condition. The exploration and exploitation parts resemble Civ very similiarly. For the expansion EL features an organic city growing system, which is adopted by Civ 6 now. City districts and extractors need to be put on the map directly, they can be destroyed or raided, which adds more to the strategic layer. The extermination, or the combat, of EL is probably my least favorite part. Instead of doing combat on the map like Civ, battles are resolved in a seperate tactical map. The problem is the combat isn't as diversed and interesting like say, AOW 3. So eventually I would just auto-resolve most of the fights.

Overall, EL is a solid 8/10 for me. If the devs can deliver the rumored "last expansion" about naval thingy plus glitch fixing, I'd gladly raise it to 9.

Pros:
10/10 x4 game. Graphics beat CIV and *definitely* has better mechanics. DLC is a great addition to the game and adds factions/quests, and fun research stuff.

Cons:
♥♥♥♥ developers who don't update their game and fix (multiplayer) bugs. FIX THEM!! It's been 1+ years and people still get the same ♥♥♥♥ing bugs. Plus their website has been down for (almost half a year. Jesus christ, get your ♥♥♥♥ together AMPLITUDE Studios!!
No one plays/hosts multiplayer games. No reason too. Multiplayer lobby list is literally EMPTY.

Past the infuriating bugs the game *still* has, I definitely recommend playing. It's a very very fun game, and it's just as satisfying playing single-player matches. This game had so much potential for multiplayer, it's a real shame.

Around 20 hours played and I love this game. I was a bit afraid of this game just being a re-skin of Sid Meier's Civilization but in many regards got something completely else. The battle system, the neat graphic, variety of the races and really fun gameplays makes me recommend this game fully.

The only bad thing I can think of is the somewhat pricey DLC's. There are quite a few of them and if you want all of them it surely adds up.

Ssenkrad_II is a reviewer that falsifies how this game's mechanics works as well as blocks any comments that bring out the blatant lies the "reviewer" makes. It is possible to win the game through diplomacy, quest, supremacy, etc. This is coming from some one that has the achievements for winning the game multiple ways and has almost the same amount of hours as the reviewer claiming that supremacy is the only way to win.

The false review mentioned found here:
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198072017110/recommended/289130/

Do not trust any reviews from the previously mentioned Steam user as they simply do not go in-depth or even allow people to question the credibility of their claims when they try to paint the game in a light that implies a mechanic is broken.

The actual game itself does not have a hard learning curve if you've played previous turn based strategy games. The diplomacy system is straightforward and shows you whether or not the trade will be agreed. Diplomacy is basic to the point that complimenting an empire for a handful of turns can make a hostile empire more friendly to the point that you can eventually ally them.

Endless Legend is a great game that is an easy pick up for anyone wanting to get into the 4x, turn based strategy genre. Factions are easy to learn and the game allows you to partake in an interesting campaign if you decide to try the quest victory. The AI can also present a challenge at higher difficulties as they are given modifiers to their economy, the handicap for the player will increase as the difficulty increases.

Settling cities is also an easy task depending on how you prioritize your city, where you place your city, and whether or not the city has a hero assigned to it. If you have a city focused on production you can dish out settlers to expand quickly but will have to sacrifice turns in doing so vs. building up that city to become a dust farm (gold).

This game also has a wonderful modding community for anyone that is interested in expanding the game through user-created content.

Under the heading above titled: 'User reviews' please ignore 'Recent'.

Recent examples: There are Chinese guys who aren't good at English and manifestly angry about it (because this game is obviously localized for a hot market like China) and another guy thought this was a HoMM clone. Still others thought it 'boring', 'sterile' and many found it 'confusing'... So I conclude that those who aren't Chinese and know what kind of game this is ought to be the right person to consider buying this title. Those with short attention spans and questionable intelligence, should in theory not enjoy this game.

The rest of you not falling into the abovementioned categories may read the very many positive reviews that dwarf the negative ones entirely and rest securely in the knowledge that you would be buying a well-designed 4X title with plenty of content to justify its cost.

Also don't play it in a hospital for the experience might turn out to be 'sterile'.
