I am fearfull, as these Things are Dangerous. I also hear there’s one of those newfangl’d Kickstart’rs involv’d, and Senscape is promis’g the most faithful H. P. L. game ever — crucially a Third-Person Adventure (whatever that meanes) that will throwe Players back to a Golden Age of gaming.

They say renowned scholar and H. P. L. authority S. T. Joshi is assist’g the project, and a rigorous documentary about the making of the game and H. P. L.’s life in Prouidence shall be produced too. It is welle knowne that The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is the only novel H. P. L. wrote, and one of His more popular. The booke tells of ye Adventures of the foolish and naïve Charles as he becomes obsess’d with Witchcrafte and Occult Arts across vintage Prouidence and Salem to calle up Flesh from dead Saltes. Senscape says it is a perfect storie for an Adventure Game adaptation. They are even hint’g at more H. P. L. games if the Kickstart’r Endeavour proves successful enough!

In one monthe it shall be Hallow’s Eue and ye Thing is breed’g in ye Outside Spheres. How long has it been? A man sits in a distant getaway cabin waiting for his wife Serena. Where is she? Things in the cabin evoke memories, and the husband comes to a disturbing realization...

This short point-and-click adventure is the result of a massive collaborative effort between dozens of fans and designers of adventure games. Rallying to support the venerable genre and its passionate community, these developers have brought together a grim and highly detailed horror story in what is the largest, possibly even the first, game project of its kind. Talents include crew from renowned indie companies Senscape, CBE Software, Infamous Quests, Digital Media Workshop, Guys from Andromeda, and many more.

Features

  • A (twisted) love letter to the adventure game community
  • Over 40 contributors provided their wit and talents
  • Extremely depressive mood, and a bit of fear here and there
  • A haunting story that will challenge your intellect (and temerity)
  • Amazing voice acting by legendary adventure game designer Josh Mandel
  • More awesome acting by popular video producer Pushing Up Roses
  • Yet another overwhelmingly astonishing surprise cameo by an ex-designer from Sierra!
  • Did we mention the gut-wrenching atmosphere?

That's an art piece, not just interactive fiction. I wish there were more of those. Although the gameplay elements are almost non-existent, It has much better deliverance of the story, than if I'd simply watched it on YouTube.
You associate yourself with Protagonist, therefore the story affects you much stronger. Overall 9/10.
Can't wait for Asylum.

First note: do not press ESC during gameplay. It will exit the game and you'll have to start over.

Serena is a very interesting experience. I hesitate to call it a game since there's no real gameplay. You only interact with a small environment and learn the story of your unnamed narrator and his wife Serena.

I won't go into details about the story, but I will mention that the twist took me a second playthrough to truly understand. The first time through I pegged the game as predictable, but I didn't realize how much of the story I had missed. The second go round, I discovered the "real" twist ending (and felt quite stupid for having it fly over my head before).

Because of this, I definitely recommend you to play through slowly and carefully. Use the spacebar to highlight objects you can interact with and click through them until you've heard every story dialogue from them. There are small clues scattered throughout as to what happened in that lonely cabin.

If you pace yourself and listen through the whole story, the ending goes from predictable to quite rewarding (for you, at least).

But as I mentioned earlier, I can't really call this a game. If you're looking for a horror game, this isn't the title for you. If you want a tense, haunting experience, you're in the right place. This would be a game worth a few dollars; the fact that it's free is icing on the cake.

The atmosphere is dark and moody, and the music and sounds really seal the deal; the songs will knock you off your mental balance, and the silences will raise your nerves on end. It's a short experience, but it's one that will stick with me for a while.

If I had to make any changes, it would be these:
  • Take out the ESC quitting the game issue. I tried to pause the game partway through my first run and had to start from scratch. Most people expect ESC to lead to a menu, so I imagine this is a common occurence.
  • A bit more notification that an object has been fully interacted with would be nice. It's a short game, but there's no need to pad it out further.

I finished this game in just 1 minute short of an hour, and I must say, with all of the intensity they packed into such a short ammount of time in this game, I was only disappointed in the sheer fact that it was over.

I thought there were going to be a couple of jump scares but lo and behold, there were none to be found. Though in this case, this wasn't such a bad thing.

The musical feel mixed with the diaglogue gave you the feeling that you were there. That this nightmare was really happening to you.. I caught myself personally asking 'Where could Serena be?' more than once, and that, my friend, is what makes a good game.

10/10, why aren't there more games like this?

Once in a while, I play again through the story of "Serena". I can't really explain why but somehow there is a sordid beauty and a secret fear hidden in the development of the character's personality that you play in this very short adventure.

Of course I know very well what is going to happen, which steps I must pass to achieve the end of the game, anyway, I try to avoid it each and every time, look at the beautiful and prankish details of the game. And each and every time it gives me creeps when I took another step to my inevitable faith which reveals the inevitable truth of what I have done...

This is a work of art. Enthralling story, beautiful visuals, haunting music, everything is here. The game is short, yes, but if someone tried to stretch it out its potency would be lost. This game is a short story, unlike so many games that try to be novels. The writers knew exactly how long to make the game to convey their story, and didn't try to make it longer than that.

Plus, if you have a keen eye, there are some positively *delightful* easter eggs.

A short interactive story with strong emotions.

This one deals with separation after a loving, warm relationship grows cold and distant, one of my deepest fears and joys at the same time. It tugs on my feel strings. Excellent narration, excellent atmosphere, and it does what it was aiming for.

A beautifully haunting short story.

Sweet little horror story, which won't cost a dime. Having a simple "visual novelic" gameplay and extremly short beating time Serena is highly recommended to be played on some mellow friday or saturnday evening.

At first I thought it was slow, and I was looking at the same things over and over, but after finishing it I realise it was pacing it brilliantly. There is tension provoking factors dotted throughout, making you constantly on edge; I was with my sister when I played it, but I was still frightened (I found myself frightened to look at the picture a few times). I won't ruin the ending, but the image of the big reveal is definately one you won't forget soon, for a free game this is positively worth a go. Plus, I recomend reading the names of the books, since they made me giggle.

I paid for nothing, therefore I expected nothing. So despite the fact that the gameplay was severely limited, the story wasn't awful. Without spoiling it for you, there was a twist in the plot which I wasn't expecting. Having said that, I certainly wouldn't pay money for this game. It was an experience. Whether it was good or bad is difficult to say. If it's still free, try it out for yourself.

It won't be everyone's cup of tea but I really enjoyed it; gets very sinister very quickly. Silent Hill fans should certainly give it a go.

Serena is more like an interactive story than your standard game. The style is reminiscent of games like Dear Esther, or other relatively surreal, story driven games. Serena details the struggles of a husband who has all but forgotten the details of his wife. Exploring the one-room cabin yields the details of their lives. The narrative is especially good in that it feels very human. While I did not love the voice acting to death, it still conveyed the emotions of the husband to the player very well. Visually, the game is at least decent, although some of the moving transitions feel awkwardly blended. As the game is free, there is no reason not to give it a try and experience it first-hand.

You play as an crazy old man wondering around in his house, the main plot is the he has no idea what has happened to his wife and is trying to figure it out. You must guide the old man through all the stages of loss. This game showcases how much you can do with a small space and a few interacive objects if you have a good story. The voice acting makes it even better. I highly reccomend it, as it is free. The other huge upside to it, is the lack of jumpscares and zombies, I mean that in itself makes it better than the average horror game. It makes you feel deeply disturebed from the story, as opposed to stuff jumping out at you.

First off, it's free. Second of all it's short. So even if you do hate it it won't be a big waste of time or any sort of waste of money.

This game is a First Person point-and-click adventure with a heavy focus on narrrative and some hidden object charateristics. There are zero puzzles and as long as you inspect everything in the cabin, the story will progress. (note you have to continue to inspect items until the dialogue loops, at first I didn't know he had multiple things to say about each item)

The story is dark and mysterious, and feels like it was able to be thouroughly told in the short ammount of time it takes to play. (My first playthrough: 54 mins with a lot of retracing my steps. 2nd playthrough: half an hour, knowing where items were located and knowing to inspect them multiple times)

If you like point and click first person games or narrative heavy games then this is a must.

If you are looking to test the waters with this sort of game then this is the perfect game to pick up. Not too long, not too difficult, and best of all its FREE.

Every once in a while, you need to take a break from the crazy fast paced games that lack any plot. Serena is a great opportunity for that escape. A very beautifully created point and click adventure story featuring a very dirty and gritty but appropriate environment. The plot follows the main character trying to regain some of his memories about his lost wife. The game does a great job at carrying the player through a gambit of emotions as well as helping to progress the story at an increasing accelerated rate.

The game was created using a brand new adventure engine called Dagon developed by the Argentinian studio Senscape. Senscape was founded by the writer and creator of Serena, Agustín Cordes who also created the hit adventure game Scratches.

Overall, if you enjoy story driven adventure games, this game is well worth the time. It was very short but considering the story, the length was perfect. This was just like sitting down to read to a great short story.
