Announcing H. P. Lovecraft's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward

Now live on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/1yzkovH

Brothers and Sisters in Almousin-Metraton:—

I this day heard that Senscape got the license for H. P. L. This is a firste in that accurs’d video game industrie; for Players shall be able to delve into Spheres beyond of the sort that Abdool Al-Hazred describ’d in his VII. Booke of ye Necronomicon. I am fearfull, as these Things are Dangerous. I also hear there’s one of those newfangl’d Kickstart’rs involv’d, and Senscape is promis’g the most faithful H. P. L. game ever — crucially a Third-Person Adventure (whatever that meanes) that will throwe Players back to a Golden Age of gaming.

They say renowned scholar and H. P. L. authority S. T. Joshi is assist’g the project, and a rigorous documentary about the making of the game and H. P. L.’s life in Prouidence shall be produced too. It is welle knowne that The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is the only novel H. P. L. wrote, and one of His more popular. The booke tells of ye Adventures of the foolish and naïve Charles as he becomes obsess’d with Witchcrafte and Occult Arts across vintage Prouidence and Salem to calle up Flesh from dead Saltes. Senscape says it is a perfect storie for an Adventure Game adaptation. They are even hint’g at more H. P. L. games if the Kickstart’r Endeavour proves successful enough!

This can not be. I shall arrange for my returne to Prouidence — this news demands my attention, and I must continue in Gett’g at Olde Matters in my Way. In one monthe it shall be Hallow’s Eue and ye Thing is breed’g in ye Outside Spheres. I was tolde many times that One shou’d not call up Any that One can not put downe; but under these circumstances we have no option but to call up Him; the Beyond-One that commandes in Yuggoth; and which ye vaporous brains know by ye untranslatable Sign… and bringe back ye Crawling Shadows to human-kinde.

Do keep the Guards in Shape and Talk often with Those Outside; and waite for my com’g Backe as an Other.

How long has it been? A man sits in a distant getaway cabin waiting for his wife Serena. Where is she? Things in the cabin evoke memories, and the husband comes to a disturbing realization...

This short point-and-click adventure is the result of a massive collaborative effort between dozens of fans and designers of adventure games. Rallying to support the venerable genre and its passionate community, these developers have brought together a grim and highly detailed horror story in what is the largest, possibly even the first, game project of its kind. Talents include crew from renowned indie companies Senscape, CBE Software, Infamous Quests, Digital Media Workshop, Guys from Andromeda, and many more.

Features

  • A (twisted) love letter to the adventure game community
  • Over 40 contributors provided their wit and talents
  • Extremely depressive mood, and a bit of fear here and there
  • A haunting story that will challenge your intellect (and temerity)
  • Amazing voice acting by legendary adventure game designer Josh Mandel
  • More awesome acting by popular video producer Pushing Up Roses
  • Yet another overwhelmingly astonishing surprise cameo by an ex-designer from Sierra!
  • Did we mention the gut-wrenching atmosphere?

-It´s FREE xD
-Buenos graficos.
-Los cambios de humor del hombre son bastantes sorprendentes y eso le da un buen toque al juego.
-La historia (aunque no entendi el final).

Mi puntaje seria un: 6,8.

It is important to tell upfront that this is not a game in the common sense of the word, there is no real gameplay here. This is an interactive story, so people not interested in that can walk along.

The whole game takes place in a cabin lost in the woods, where you unfold the plot by exploring objects and opening furniture. The main character is deftly voiced, his emotions are convincingly genuine. There is no jump scares, loud sounds, and so on, the fear comes from the well crafted story and presentation. The game world might be small, but each items hold lots of memories, and as the plot advances, you see them in completely different lights.

The length of the game is perfect (roughly 1h30) for what it aims to achieve, and the pace consistantly ramps up in tension. The writing is descriptive, metaphoric and subjective. The emotional side is highly nuanced, and despite the length, you will feel conflicted several times concerning the characters and the situation it presents.

In short: a free game with the quality content you expect from a commercial product. Be aware this is a condensed experience focused solely on storytelling.

So, this is a free title, so based on that fact, there really isnt a reason for you to not draw your own conclusions and form your own opinion.

For me, this was okay. It seemed pretty obvious to me how this would play out. The ending does leave a bit of mystery, and so you are left to decide what you think actually happened. It's really not scary or shocking or anything, but it is definitely a dark tale.

The gameplay itself is super simplistic. Point and click left mouse, and you can use the space bar to highlight interactive items. Outside of that, it's all about finsing the right sequences to unlock the next part of the story. Everything happens inside the cabin, so you arent really going anywhere althoguh you do move around the cabin examining stuff.

The voice acting was not all that great. Not sure why it was lauded on the store page, lol. Could have been much better.

The actual setting looked nice and the game was easy to grasp. The story itself...you can play through it in about a half hour.

My overall rating for this game would be 6 out of 10. It's not a waste of time, but it's not all that exceptional either. I feel they overhyped the collaborative effort of the various programmers/developers/writers. This game seemed more like the sort of thing you would create in a one or two day workshop (graphics notwithstanding). Still, it's free nd very short, so why not give it a try and see for yourself. A lot of people seemed to have appreciated the artistic effort more than I did. You might be one of those. Check it out and see.

That's an art piece, not just interactive fiction. I wish there were more of those. Although the gameplay elements are almost non-existent, It has much better deliverance of the story, than if I'd simply watched it on YouTube.
You associate yourself with Protagonist, therefore the story affects you much stronger. Overall 9/10.
Can't wait for Asylum.

First note: do not press ESC during gameplay. It will exit the game and you'll have to start over.

Serena is a very interesting experience. I hesitate to call it a game since there's no real gameplay. You only interact with a small environment and learn the story of your unnamed narrator and his wife Serena.

I won't go into details about the story, but I will mention that the twist took me a second playthrough to truly understand. The first time through I pegged the game as predictable, but I didn't realize how much of the story I had missed. The second go round, I discovered the "real" twist ending (and felt quite stupid for having it fly over my head before).

Because of this, I definitely recommend you to play through slowly and carefully. Use the spacebar to highlight objects you can interact with and click through them until you've heard every story dialogue from them. There are small clues scattered throughout as to what happened in that lonely cabin.

If you pace yourself and listen through the whole story, the ending goes from predictable to quite rewarding (for you, at least).

But as I mentioned earlier, I can't really call this a game. If you're looking for a horror game, this isn't the title for you. If you want a tense, haunting experience, you're in the right place. This would be a game worth a few dollars; the fact that it's free is icing on the cake.

The atmosphere is dark and moody, and the music and sounds really seal the deal; the songs will knock you off your mental balance, and the silences will raise your nerves on end. It's a short experience, but it's one that will stick with me for a while.

If I had to make any changes, it would be these:
  • Take out the ESC quitting the game issue. I tried to pause the game partway through my first run and had to start from scratch. Most people expect ESC to lead to a menu, so I imagine this is a common occurence.
  • A bit more notification that an object has been fully interacted with would be nice. It's a short game, but there's no need to pad it out further.

I finished this game in just 1 minute short of an hour, and I must say, with all of the intensity they packed into such a short ammount of time in this game, I was only disappointed in the sheer fact that it was over.

I thought there were going to be a couple of jump scares but lo and behold, there were none to be found. Though in this case, this wasn't such a bad thing.

The musical feel mixed with the diaglogue gave you the feeling that you were there. That this nightmare was really happening to you.. I caught myself personally asking 'Where could Serena be?' more than once, and that, my friend, is what makes a good game.

10/10, why aren't there more games like this?

Serena is a short and atmospheric exploration game that plays like a simplistic point and click game without the usual gameplay elements such as inventories, puzzles or different locations and is set in a cabin in the woods, where you play as a man who seemingly lost his memory and now is trying to find clues about the whereabouts of his wife, Serena.

While the gameplay itself isn't anything special, it's the story that keeps the game going. It starts out as sort of a love story of a young couple but the further you progress and the more memories you regain, the clearer your mind gets and faces you with the sad truth of what your relationship with your beloved wife has become.

I don't want to spoil anything of the story, but it's an intense emotional rollercoaster ride throughout the ~1 hour of playtime and if you're looking for a relaxing game that tells both a sweet and sad story, make sure to check the game out.

It's free!

Hi i wanted to say this small point and click adventure is exciting you feel like you are in a bad movie and the mood is very deppressive. But this little story is quite nice made the voice acting is also very good and keeps you clicking through the story. I can recommend this really to play once at least you need at most 1 hour or less to play it through.

A short interactive story with strong emotions.

This one deals with separation after a loving, warm relationship grows cold and distant, one of my deepest fears and joys at the same time. It tugs on my feel strings. Excellent narration, excellent atmosphere, and it does what it was aiming for.

A beautifully haunting short story.

This is a great game, tho it could have been done as a flash game, but its free so that doesnt matter, the game is very short and can be completed in less than half an hour, but doesnt lack on the story.

You live in a cabin, with your wife serena, but she has gone, you must find out why she has left.
I don't want to spoil the end but it left me really confused.

This is a game that reminds me a lot of Gone Home, in the sense that it's a point-and-click type of game where you are unraveling this deep story as to why you are at this location in the first place, as well as what had happened there. The story, in my opinion, was very different and was intriguing until the end. However, I did not find any replay value in this game.

If you're looking for a short game that tells an amazing story, then this is the game for you!

I am absolutely useless at horror games. Once, someone left me on my own in a dark room to play Dead Space on his phone with headphones on. I bailed before the first monster.

So I had reservations before downloading this until I realised 3 things: I was bored, I'm a broke student and the word 'Free'. What more did I need?

The key to this game's effectiveness lies in it's atmosphere, like all good games and indeed all good scary media forms. I wouldn't call the game 'scary' per se, more 'eerie'.
The premise is simple: a man waits for his wife Serena in their holiday cabin, while trying to piece their life together in his mind. The best part (no spoilers) is where there is a shift in mood: voice tone changes, eerie music creeps up on you slowly, the tone shifts and a tactile tension settles like the dust covering all this cabin's memories. The voice acting by both leads is very laudible for an independent, largely fan-funded game.

The short version: Wonderfully atmospheric, disturbing, well-written game which will leave you uncomfortable in the best way.
