Announcing H. P. Lovecraft's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward

Now live on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/1yzkovH

Brothers and Sisters in Almousin-Metraton:—

I this day heard that Senscape got the license for H. P. L. This is a firste in that accurs’d video game industrie; for Players shall be able to delve into Spheres beyond of the sort that Abdool Al-Hazred describ’d in his VII. Booke of ye Necronomicon. I am fearfull, as these Things are Dangerous. I also hear there’s one of those newfangl’d Kickstart’rs involv’d, and Senscape is promis’g the most faithful H. P. L. game ever — crucially a Third-Person Adventure (whatever that meanes) that will throwe Players back to a Golden Age of gaming.

They say renowned scholar and H. P. L. authority S. T. Joshi is assist’g the project, and a rigorous documentary about the making of the game and H. P. L.’s life in Prouidence shall be produced too. It is welle knowne that The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is the only novel H. P. L. wrote, and one of His more popular. The booke tells of ye Adventures of the foolish and naïve Charles as he becomes obsess’d with Witchcrafte and Occult Arts across vintage Prouidence and Salem to calle up Flesh from dead Saltes. Senscape says it is a perfect storie for an Adventure Game adaptation. They are even hint’g at more H. P. L. games if the Kickstart’r Endeavour proves successful enough!

This can not be. I shall arrange for my returne to Prouidence — this news demands my attention, and I must continue in Gett’g at Olde Matters in my Way. In one monthe it shall be Hallow’s Eue and ye Thing is breed’g in ye Outside Spheres. I was tolde many times that One shou’d not call up Any that One can not put downe; but under these circumstances we have no option but to call up Him; the Beyond-One that commandes in Yuggoth; and which ye vaporous brains know by ye untranslatable Sign… and bringe back ye Crawling Shadows to human-kinde.

Do keep the Guards in Shape and Talk often with Those Outside; and waite for my com’g Backe as an Other.

About This Game

How long has it been? A man sits in a distant getaway cabin waiting for his wife Serena. Where is she? Things in the cabin evoke memories, and the husband comes to a disturbing realization...

This short point-and-click adventure is the result of a massive collaborative effort between dozens of fans and designers of adventure games. Rallying to support the venerable genre and its passionate community, these developers have brought together a grim and highly detailed horror story in what is the largest, possibly even the first, game project of its kind. Talents include crew from renowned indie companies Senscape, CBE Software, Infamous Quests, Digital Media Workshop, Guys from Andromeda, and many more.

Features

  • A (twisted) love letter to the adventure game community
  • Over 40 contributors provided their wit and talents
  • Extremely depressive mood, and a bit of fear here and there
  • A haunting story that will challenge your intellect (and temerity)
  • Amazing voice acting by legendary adventure game designer Josh Mandel
  • More awesome acting by popular video producer Pushing Up Roses
  • Yet another overwhelmingly astonishing surprise cameo by an ex-designer from Sierra!
  • Did we mention the gut-wrenching atmosphere?

Serena is a short and atmospheric exploration game that plays like a simplistic point and click game without the usual gameplay elements such as inventories, puzzles or different locations and is set in a cabin in the woods, where you play as a man who seemingly lost his memory and now is trying to find clues about the whereabouts of his wife, Serena.

While the gameplay itself isn't anything special, it's the story that keeps the game going. It starts out as sort of a love story of a young couple but the further you progress and the more memories you regain, the clearer your mind gets and faces you with the sad truth of what your relationship with your beloved wife has become.

I don't want to spoil anything of the story, but it's an intense emotional rollercoaster ride throughout the ~1 hour of playtime and if you're looking for a relaxing game that tells both a sweet and sad story, make sure to check the game out.

It's free!

It is important to tell upfront that this is not a game in the common sense of the word, there is no real gameplay here. This is an interactive story, so people not interested in that can walk along.

The whole game takes place in a cabin lost in the woods, where you unfold the plot by exploring objects and opening furniture. The main character is deftly voiced, his emotions are convincingly genuine. There is no jump scares, loud sounds, and so on, the fear comes from the well crafted story and presentation. The game world might be small, but each items hold lots of memories, and as the plot advances, you see them in completely different lights.

The length of the game is perfect (roughly 1h30) for what it aims to achieve, and the pace consistantly ramps up in tension. The writing is descriptive, metaphoric and subjective. The emotional side is highly nuanced, and despite the length, you will feel conflicted several times concerning the characters and the situation it presents.

In short: a free game with the quality content you expect from a commercial product. Be aware this is a condensed experience focused solely on storytelling.

This is a game that reminds me a lot of Gone Home, in the sense that it's a point-and-click type of game where you are unraveling this deep story as to why you are at this location in the first place, as well as what had happened there. The story, in my opinion, was very different and was intriguing until the end. However, I did not find any replay value in this game.

If you're looking for a short game that tells an amazing story, then this is the game for you!

I wanted to like this. I tried playing it three times. First time, I got stuck and hit ESC to try and bring up a save menu. Instead I get booted out of the game with no autosave. Second time, I tried to CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open a walkthrough so I could progress the story. Instead, my computer went haywire and my mouse pointer was stuck in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, so I couldn't switch back to the game. Third time, I tried on a different computer (in case it was just a Linux issue) and nope, same problem with the mouse pointer.

After reading some discussions, I realized I'd made it almost to the end of the game anyway, so my reaction is "...that's it?" The Big Twist is predictable as soon as the game starts if you're familiar at all with the genre.

I guess the forced fullscreen and inability to save was intended to make the game more immersive, but the immersion's already ruined by the terrible voice acting and the tedium of wandering around clicking on random things a dozen times apiece until something finally advances the story. I generally like story-based games like this, but the technical issues just made me feel like this was a waste of my time.

Was this a joke? The entire "game" consists of listening to a guy process about his doomed relationship with a woman. This game was undoubtedly made by lesbians, right?

Don't make a game venting to me about your divorce, please.

People on Steam raving about how "GOOD THE STORY WAS"... Seriously? This is your bar for good story? The graphics are offensively ugly, the atmosphere is oppressive and stale (no, not in a good way), and the voice acting is nearly painful to listen to. It's -awful-.

The main character and Serena both come off as selfish people in the end who I found myself more repulsed by than feeling like I could relate to them. Especially the guy. This is one for the trash bin!

A fantastic short story brought to life through a "point-and-click" adventure. Incredible atmosphere, great musical tones added to dramatize interesting finds, and a plot twist I have not seen before.

Great work.

Intersting and emotional experience that's worth your time. Give it a try. It's not too long and you feel like you've gained something after you complete it.

Let me put this plainly - Scary as heck. I don't mean "Boo!" scary, but "Something is gonna f*** up your day" scary. I could only play this for so long alone because of that factor... however, I definitely intend to finish it!

Serena is a short point-to-click game with a creepy ambience. I did not find the game completely horrific and did, I must admit, give up after clicking on everything possible in the game. I found that it got creepier and creepier until a certain point where it just got creepily boring. I liked the game and I liked the graphics, as you can move around your head and look around the place. If you aren't a fan of jumpscares, I would reccomend this game to you, as it is slightly creepy. I don't know if it gets good because it just took so long to get started. Therefore I don't reccomend the game to anybody seeking a horror genre type game. Thanks for reading!

For a short and linear game, this game felt like literature. In a good way. Even though in the end he decides to do nothing about his comments, his emotions are what spin the world around. It is really well-paved. However, as a point-and-click horror, there was no clicky action. Although, this game does great without them. Hint: press the spacebar.

Intrigish, disturbing, poetic and dark. Even if not into point & click genre, worth to give it a try for the storytelling and the atmosphere. I did heard about this game engine some months ago, now I got a better idea how it could be used. The point & click seems not dead yet and can still get some nice surprises.
