This short point-and-click adventure is the result of a massive collaborative effort between dozens of fans and designers of adventure games. Rallying to support the venerable genre and its passionate community, these developers have brought together a grim and highly detailed horror story in what is the largest, possibly even the first, game project of its kind. Talents include crew from renowned indie companies Senscape, CBE Software, Infamous Quests, Digital Media Workshop, Guys from Andromeda, and many more.

L’article d’aujourd’hui est déconseillé si vous n’avez pas le moral au top. Vous avez peut être entendu parler d’Asylum, le point & click horrifique de l’argentin Agustín Cordes dont la campagne Kickstarter s’est terminée il y a un an.

Entre temps, le développeur de Buenos Aires s’est associé à des personnalités du monde du jeu d’aventure pour créer Serena, qui utilise le même moteur graphique, et est disponible gratuitement sur Steam depuis janvier.

First off, this is not, in the strictest sense of the word, a game. You literally just point & click to move the story along, there are no puzzles, and even the order in which you click on things makes only a marginal difference.

Second, this is a free install, and you can experience the whole thing in less than an hour. I'm giving it a positive recommendation as a promise that, if you happen to have an hour to kill, you can get something out of playing this, positive or negative. I really think it's that sort of thing where you just have to find it out for yourself and not spend your time reading lots of reviews first and go into it prejudiced.

Play it now, or put it on your list of things to do at some unspecified point in the future, your choice -- but stop reading the reviews. You can come back to them afterwards. If you read just one review, I hope it's this one. :-)

You walk around in a wooden cabin, examining stuff, unfolding the story, which gets creepier and creepier. It's pretty interesting how the mood (the comments of the character and the appearance of the cabin) changes during the course of the game and gets, like I said, darker.

Good story, originally made up (mindf...) ending with a very nice surprise to it -- sure was an hour well spent.

Free and nice little game. If you are in a mood for discovering mysteries OR just playing old school quests like Myst, this is the game to play! It's intresting and keeps you in suspense! Still I have to admit that I had a game breaking bug in the ending, that seems to hapeen only to me in my machine.

Genre: Point and Click Adventure/Psychological horror

In Greek mythology and the Homerian epics, madness is similarly thought of as a punishment from God, or the gods. Thus Hera punishes Hercules by ‘sending madness upon him’, and Agamemnon confides to Achilles that ‘Zeus robbed me of my wits’. Thanks to the Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377 BC), madness first became an object of scientific speculation.

So Serena (a short point and click adventure set in a single setting - a lonely wooded cabin) opens with a man waiting for the arrival of his wife. As we point and click on various items strewn about the incredibly run-down cabin (a not-so-subtle metaphor used to display the clarity of the mind of its main protagonist) cracks in the veneer begin to surface. Without going into too much detail its suffice to say gamers should expect to see exactly where this story is headed within the first five minutes of playing (the game roughly lasts about 40 min before concluding).

Whilst it's an interesting experiment that comes along with some pedigree - Josh Mandel of Space Quest fame handles the narration of the main character. My mine gripe is that he is probably not the person who should have handled these duties. He comes across as stilted when the script calls for emotional variation and I didn't buy it for one second. The woman who handles the wife's duties comes across as robotic in her line delivery even when called upon to display hysteria and it feels like both are reading from a script as the voice-overs just don't flow naturally. Yes - I realize this is a free little title that probably didn't have the budget to hire professional actors - but having professional voice actors onboard would most certainly have been more beneficial.

I was also not mad about the main character voicing his thoughts about every single little thing we click on. Yes we may be dealing with a descent that's crux is akin to an emotional ship-wreck but having studied basic psychology at Uni before switching, I get that we are mearly an observer inside another man's fractured mind but instead of drawing me in to the complexity of a mind unraveling I was left distanced and more and more annoyed as the tale progressed.

Short and bleak this tale of love, loss and misery is thankfully over quickly. I would hardly call it a "love-letter to the adventure gaming clique" as there are far better examples out there but as a mild diversion you may end up enjoying it more than I did since I can't say I was overly impressed.

Voilà un jeu qui laisse une bien étrange impression. Très court, il revêt tout son intérêt à la lecture, l'écoute de chaque texte, savourant au départ ce lieu étrange avant de finir par tourner comme un lion en cage. L'histoire se débloque alors peu à peu, et nous entraînant dans un tourbillon de sentiments confus, où les émotions les plus opposées se suivent aux moindre clic. Que s'est-il passé ici ? Peut-on sortir ? Où est Serena ? ... En peu de temps, tout se révèle à ceux qui savent regarder, écouter, et se plonger dans cette expérience vidéoludique bien particulière. Attention, le niveau en anglais n'est pas aisé. Mais l'essentiel se comprend assez facilement. Un jeu, court, sombre et envoûtant. Un joli cadeau (jeu gratuit) qui vaut la peine d'être essayé, pour peu qu'on ait la patience, la curiosité, et la ténacité pour en venir à bout. Même si Serena n'est pas vraiment un jeu d'aventure à proprement parler, il s'agit d'une expérience originale à vivre, entre Dear Esther, Anna et une publicité interactive aboutie pour le moteur graphique de création de jeux "Senscape's Dagon engine".
