À propos de ce jeu

How long has it been? A man sits in a distant getaway cabin waiting for his wife Serena. Where is she? Things in the cabin evoke memories, and the husband comes to a disturbing realization...

This short point-and-click adventure is the result of a massive collaborative effort between dozens of fans and designers of adventure games. Rallying to support the venerable genre and its passionate community, these developers have brought together a grim and highly detailed horror story in what is the largest, possibly even the first, game project of its kind. Talents include crew from renowned indie companies Senscape, CBE Software, Infamous Quests, Digital Media Workshop, Guys from Andromeda, and many more.

Features

  • A (twisted) love letter to the adventure game community
  • Over 40 contributors provided their wit and talents
  • Extremely depressive mood, and a bit of fear here and there
  • A haunting story that will challenge your intellect (and temerity)
  • Amazing voice acting by legendary adventure game designer Josh Mandel
  • More awesome acting by popular video producer Pushing Up Roses
  • Yet another overwhelmingly astonishing surprise cameo by an ex-designer from Sierra!
  • Did we mention the gut-wrenching atmosphere?

This is one for an English Literature analysis paper. Too bad you can not put a spoiler alert on a review. Anything I would or could say would spoil the narrative.

NOTE: Short and MUST be completed in a single sitting. There is no save feature.

Tough to recommend, but tough not to.

What is Serena?
Serena is point and click game in the traditional sense. The game involves around the main character looking at objects and telling and remenbering the memories of the life with his wife Serena while he waits for her return to the cabin they call home.

Is this an horror game with spocky creatures or ghosts that jumpscare you?
The answer is no, the game does have its dark moments but there is no monsters or anything like that.

Story
Every object and furniture in the house has a story in their relationship which makes the story quite immersive. Some of them change in appearance according to what the main character has remenbered and is feeling.

Gameplay
In this game you click multiple times in the various objects to get the various pieces of dialogue. Once you make a breakthough in the plot the ambience changes and the objects will then have new dialogue and some objects change their appearance along with the enviroment.

The game doesn't tell you but there is only two keyboard keys you can use: SPACE allows you to highlight all the clickable objects and ESC that makes you quit the game if you press it twice.
The game doesn't have a save feature but it can be forgiven since it is just an hour long.

Voice Acting
The voice acting in this game is pretty good. I was expecting something really bad since it is a free indie game and all but I was suprised for its quality.

Conclusion
This is a pretty good point and click game that delivers it's story quite well though the enviroment and the dialogue.

While the assets, art, and animation of this game are very well done, the voice acting was really grating and it was obvious that the female voice actor was reading lines she had never seen before. That would also be acceptable, except that I guessed the ending/plot of this game literally from reading the blurb on the store page. The twist was so predictable that I felt quite disappointed. If you're 12 and have never read any sort of horror or gothic Victorian fiction, you might get a little thrill out of this game. Otherwise, the writing was less than engaging.

This was an interesting exploration horror game but it took me an hour to complete. The problem is the whole game (almost) is spent learning about the characters and then there is a bit of a jump scare moment and by the end you have no sympathy for any of the characters. Maybe I missed something. I will definitely not be playing this again, even if I missed some. Movement and interaction were an ordeal and the game very quickly feels incredibly repetitive. Also we (or at least I) never find out what led to these events/circumstances.

And yeah you are stuck in the cabin the entire time, and there are things that look like you should be able to interact with, but don't/can't. Also random creepy photos on the wall that are never explained.

Edit: One of my main annoyances throughout the game is that there seems to be no settings/setup whatsoever. The game forces fullscreen and has no size or volume controls.
