Nearly done!

So for those of you who follow the Trello progress, you'll see that we're finally down to just build testing left to go on this latest, giant update! And even that's over halfway complete!

It's very exciting. I have put almost 18 months of blood, sweat and tears into this update, fixing hundreds of bugs, optimizing dozens of routines to make the game run faster, doing heaps of visual upgrades and new features...

So to those coming in late to the game, here's a quick recap of things:

The main features of what's coming in the new update:

- Boss monsters: At the bottom of each and every dungeon in the game is a special boss monster now, which holds the key to the mega-chest on the bottom floor of the dungeon, carries special loot and, most importantly, can use magic! Be prepared for a big fight... The deeper the dungeon, the nastier the boss monster!

- Permadeath corpses: Now, when a permadeath player dies in the game, they leave behind a corpse in the world at the exact location of their death. ANYONE playing the game on permadeath mode can find that corpse and loot it to get their items. Once it's been looted by someone, it disappears for everyone else.

- Unique items: When you die as a permadeath character, the gear you were carrying gets renamed after your character, so their legacy can live on!

- Procedural magic system: This is the biggie. The entire game has been re-written to work around a new, procedural magic system. This system is crafting-based using special items you can search for and collect throughout the world. Because it's crafting based, there are a MASSIVE number of spell combinations available for you to make. Combine multiple effects, add auto-repeat functionality... Create anything from a simple healing spell to a rapid-fire shockwave that pulses out from you in a ring, filling entire rooms with lightning that also steals health from your enemies and gives it to you!

All of this took a HECK of a long time to code, and even led to a massive technical hurdle where the language the game is written in actually wouldn't let me add any more code to it (I literally broke the engine by having too much code). Boy that was scary, let me tell you... I thought it was going to kill the project. No-one was able to help me find a solution, either, since no-one had had this happen before. But after about three months of trying to find a way around it, I worked it out, and everything got back on track. That was a relief, I assure you... Remember that I'm just one guy working on this massive, massive project, so when something like this happens it's a bit of a show-stopper!

Either way, I've had life hit me in the nuts quite a bit during the creation of this update - it hasn't been a good 18 months - but I've gotten through it because of you guys' amazing support. You're all amazing. Even the people who have been upset about the time taken have been a help, as it shows me just how much you want to see this update come out!

Well now it's almost here, I really hope you enjoy it. I do, after all, make games to bring people joy. I get so many nice messages sent to me telling me how much they love exploring Ahkranox, and now you'll have so many more things to do in there, so I hope you all enjoy it!

Not long now, testing is almost complete. I'll of course do up one of my giant update launch videos explaining things in a little more detail, but in the meantime, if you haven't already, check out ShoHashi's video giving a quick explanation of things. It really covers it very nicely!

Kind of a nothing update... But also something!

Hi all, I know many would like updates on how the update is progressing, which is perfectly understandable, so while I do have an update for you, I'm afraid it's not a very interesting one. But it's an update nonetheless!

Work is progressing well - haven't hit any roadblocks since that last big one. The to-do list for the mega-update used to be MASSIVE but now is down to a handful of items, which is nice to see for me, considering I sink a good 10-12 hours per day into coding this monstrosity! The only downside is, ALL of the items I've been doing are just bugfixes on the new magic features, and so there's nothing to really SHOW you guys... I mean... Other than the "done" column in my to-do list haha

I wish that bugfixing all day came with awesome screenshots and video oppourtunities, but the reality of it is that all of the new functionality is in place and you've seen previews of it! It's just still got some bugs in it which I'm trying to iron out. Well... Not trying... I HAVE been ironing them out.

So the long and short of it is that the update is coming close to done (finally!) and then I can move onto the final polish!

BIG thanks to all the people who have gotten in touch or come over to the official forums, where I try and remain as active as I can. I'm sorry I'm not more communicative, but those playing the long game will remember that I used to spend 80% of my time responding to everyone and only 20% of my time actually doing work on the game! So to those who have had the patience to deal with my crazy work schedule, I say thank you! And to those who still think the update isn't coming up, I say.... You'll see ;-)

Now! It's 20 to 6 in the evening and I've been coding since about 9am, so I'm gonna get back to it. I plan on going until at LEAST 9 or 10pm tonight, since I've been on a roll. Polished off 6 items off my to-do list already today! Sorry there's not much visually to show for it, but it means when the update DOES come out it'll run nice and smoothly!

Malevolence was the result of a wonderfully successful Kickstarter campaign, whose stretch goals allowed us to begin early work on Malevolence's first expansion pack, which we will be diving into as soon as the base game is done. Sales from this base game will also go to furthering the development of the expansion pack!
