I've had a lot of fun with this game. I like the music and the art style. The humor is a little lame at times, buy it usually fits the tone of the game pretty well. The tapes are a good addition to the gameplay, though they could maybe use some more grab attacks, like previous games had.

I feel like the ability to dodge, activate gleam, and use special abilities creates a little more variety in gameplay and allows for a higher skill ceiling than earlier iterations had.

I haven't tried co-op, so I can't comment on that aspect of the game. I felt like it was worth my time and money, though I think I got it in a bundle. I wouldn't mind a sequel made by the company.

Horrible, pathetic controls for its time. The NES version had a better setup. Game crashes constantly under Windows 10. Developers do not care at all. Don't waste your hard-earned money like I did.

It's really difficult to rate this game since a simple thumbs up or down won't do it justice. The devs obviously have a lot of love for the genre and Double Dragon (even though the style they chose funny as it is, has little in common with DD which was never what the latest trend of Kung Fury/80s style parodies are doing now - so some hardcore fans of the original might find the shift questionable), there are some great ideas behind it, some work, some don't (not sure if grinding and rpg elements add depth or just drag it) but unfortunately it all comes down to the game's main problem which is the sluggish controls and combat.

Considering this is a Double Dragon game, you can understand how important this is. Everything feels slow, not very responsive - a thing that becomes even more noticeable and irritating in the few platforming segments - , limited movesets and even missing classic moves that have been the staple of the franchise forever (no hair pull/knee on face?!), some cheap difficulty and encounters where opponents and bosses have some iffy invincibilty at times, a bit of repetition with stage traps and worst of all: the weapons!

Yes, as strange as it sounds I never felt so dissapointed with weapons picking in a Double Dragon game, one of the most famous mechanics the game introduced. The animations drag, the hit detection is not always perfect and picking and using weapons felt less rewarding and more of a thing to avoid so you won't get easily hit.

And why no d-input support? At least for me the gamepads could not work with the game! :(

Another problem for some systems including mine was the eventual framedrops and stuttering that happens after a while, I guess due to memory problems?

Not everything is bad though, some stages have great art direction, the music is a blast to hear (what a great soundtrack, both new songs and homages and remixes to the classic ones!), and special mention has to be made for one of the funniest and greatest end credits in a game ever!

Of course I may sound as if the game is horrible, but it is not! There is enjoyment out of the game and if you sit and remember the past horrible shoddy ports and various awful games that have tarnished the brand in the past, this is definitely one of the better efforts. The game might not exactly feel like a Double Dragon and the controls are not that good, but at least it is playable (!!) and a fun little beat em up that pays homage to the genre.

It's just unfortunate that the devs could not repeat the fastness, fluidity and overall greatness of what I call "The definitive Double Dragon" of Double Dragon Advance, a game so many years older but - forgive me for the pun - so much more advanced than Neon.

Still an admirable effort!

I hope this is not the last we see of Billy Jimmy & Marian!

It’s clear that Double Dragon Neon was made out of love for the classic originals, but while it’s presentation does an adorable job of capturing the essence of classic 80s beat-em-ups, this beat-em-up unfortunately takes just as much steps back in terms of it’s gameplay.

Pros:
  • The game faithfully captures a lot of what made Double Dragon unique in identity, visuals, and more.
  • A absolutely amazing presentation. A great soundtrack, and the 3D/2D Visuals look pretty decent!
  • There’s Co-Op, which is pretty cool.

Nitpicks:
  • Sometimes the objects are in 2D, meaning they can easily be mistaken for the background.
  • Embarrassingly cringey dialogue/voice acting, although I guess it sorta fits with the game’s tone.
  • Mixtapes for the most part feel incredibly useless: Stances don’t do much and are not worth the grind, and the Special Moves are boring and uninteresting.

Cons:
  • Combat and Movement feels incredibly sluggish.
  • The knockback from certain enemies is absolutely unbearable
  • In general, the overall game feels completely cheap and unfair in design. Enemies can do an insane amount of crap to you without you really being able to counter back and some of the bosses are genuinely unbalanced and completely broken
  • Terrible Optimization. Game has constant framerate drops (even on my main PC rig!), tons of crashing issues, and optimization issues with newer hardware.
  • It’s incredibly short length (Clocking around an hour or less) is honestly a saving grace for the wrong reasons. Otherwise the game heavily relies on higher diffciulty modes, which makes a lot of the issues with the cheap design even worse.

The Review

I am absolutely astonished just how hard it was for me to enjoy the game. While the presentation for the game is incredibly high-level, it feels like the gameplay bogs the entire experience down to a short, frustrating, and repetitive experience.

Double Dragon Neon takes a lot of it’s beat-em-up traits from the original classics, but the end result is something that feels incredibly slow compared to the originals. Punching feels incredibly sluggish and moving around is janky and clunky. Besides your simplistic combos and weapons that you can pick up, you also have both special buffs and special moves in the form of mixtapes. The Sonsetsu Mix-Tapes give you a generic, spammable ability that drains a bar and the stances change your stats, which is often quite useless. Leveling up these stances require a unwelcomingly long amount of grinding for what can be not that noticeable changes in yours tats..

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=714434342

Perhaps what’s even worse are the enemies and bosses you encounter throughout the game. Some of the enemies in this game are just poorly designed, with them often having cheap moves or having a certain mechanic to them that makes fighting them an absolute chore. Bosses are even worse, with some of them even having large one-hit KO moves that are often very difficult to avoid. And don’t even tell me that fair or even remotely acceptable game design: Because it isn’t.

So what does Double Dragon really do right? Well for one, the game looks visually pleasing to the eye (Although at the cost of some objects being difficult to tell from the background), has a really good soundtrack, and for the most part has a often goofy tone that is while cringey, incredibly adorable. The aesthetics look like a HD Remaster of an actual Double Dragon game, and the cartoony humor is an often weird but zany change that gives Neon it’s own identity.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=714609424

But that identity just gets wasted on an overall frustrating and sluggish experience to go through. And it’s not necessarily a long one either, with the game only lasting a short, one-hour playthrough. And because of it’s gameplay I really don’t see a reason to come back on it’s even more frustrating and unbearable difficulties.

So ultimately, Double Dragon Neon isn’t certainly a complete mess. With it’s decent aesthetic it can be good fun with a friend, but that really depends if good fun = Clunky Gameplay, Cheap Levels and hilariously unbalanced battles by your standards. If you want to play a good beat-em-up, look elsewhere.

TL;DR - [Double Dragon Neon tries so hard to live up to the name but absolutely fails at achieving anything beyond its presentation.]

Not Recommended for EVERYONE.

I absolutely adore the aesthetic, but this game controls like absolute garbage. It's stiff, unintuitive, and simply not fun. It's also too hard to begin with, so it feels like it was balanced for co-op, for which I have no partner.
I feel like it caters to fighting game players with its control scheme, which I also cannot play and don't enjoy. I watched gameplay of this prior to getting it too, so I knew what I was in for, but it just feels so damn awful.
Go play Dust: An Elysian Tail if you want to know what a good side-scroller feels like.

I think that DDN is a vry fun game with a great soundtrak, awesome levels, epic bosses and you can play online or with your friends on the couch. The combat is a little sluggish and I think they could have being little bit more creative with the enemy disign other then those I think this game is awesome and remond it to anybody who is a fan of beat-em-ups or the original Double Dragon

Excellent game, the problem is that it crashes all the time and I can only play one level at a time.

i7-4790k, GTX 970, and Win 10 should not have this kind of issue with this recent of a game.

Will update review when the crashing issue is resolved.

2D 80's-style goodness with addictive beat'em co-op both local and online, a bro-tacular game indeed! Only major downside is how it keeps crashing lately mid-game (though I have Win7 but my bro-in-arms plays on Win10, so that might be the case???)
There is not much to say else about the game. It is high-quality 80s cheesiness brought to you by WayForward, i.e. the Platinum Games among western (indie) developers. Graphics are amazingly well detailed and the game boasts a killer soundtrack. It's also pretty cheap during sales. So yeah, get the game.
