“The most randomly awesome game I've played in a while”

“... generation upon generation of user-made structures dot the landscape, and oversized shapes and enigmatic letters mystify like Nazca lines. It feels free, like playing with Legos as kid. You have agency. There are all sorts of weird ways to play. You can transform into a zombie if you want, try and spread a plague, mix things up. Oh, and beware of LawyerCats. They’re out for blood.”

Overall review and problem.

This game was good for 1 year. Things went horribly downhill. I am a very experienced player, i've built some of the most epic buildings in the game, i am a very known player, my name is Chris_Ramos. I joined the day 19/10/2014.

Owner of 10 towns, proud maker of Russian themed cities, glitch blocker and an absolute fighter for opinions. What do i mean with that? I don't want anyone to get repressed for sharing it's own opinion, like it happend to me.

Some months ago couple of friends got banned for their own reasons. The developer (Sim9) not having enough fun he banned some of his old players to see if that made him feel better. ♥♥♥♥ move, he split the community in half.

Game Forums

They weren't dead before this enraged developer banned everyone asking "Why did my friends get banned??".
Any kind of protest was completly removed with the thread itself.

Now just 11 year old kids trying to become moderators of this game wander in the forums flipping the ♥♥♥♥ over when someone posts a noob question or a simple swear. REPORT REPORT REPORT!!

Hermit & Kyro

Here is where things go to ♥♥♥♥. They both were game moderators, one posted a funny meme about the infamous "Mini-mods", moderators wanna-be.

Sim9, the enraged developer, got so angry that someone posted a meme he PERMANENTLY BANNED THIS MODERATOR.

At this point you are asking "Who the ♥♥♥♥ is Kyro then?" A retired mod of course! Mememaster, dank overlord of belair. After he noticed this lil' kiddo banned his friend for posting memes, he got ♥♥♥♥ing angry you bet.
He went in-game and had a little discussion.

After that he got an obvious ban. After this, it shocked me that the dev didn't even care about it. For 2 years those moderators been supporting this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ community based game. Around only 4 players i trust. That includes my best friends.

Why do i hate this "Sim9"?

After i was complaining that he should be on a better mood when checking forums he ♥♥♥♥♥ed fury all over the chat.
I told him to learn to take jokes, welcome to the internet.

He Hard-muted me, he permanently banned me on IRC, and he disabled my posting in the forums.

What am i now?

Another dead player. I don't play this game anymore due to the ♥♥♥♥ that happend there, in less than a month he took the love i had for him.

Who the ♥♥♥♥ were you even?

Translator of the game, also beta tester of March Of Industry, 9bitMMO (his ♥♥♥♥♥♥ 3D game) and i was going to be a moderator. Rejected this, never become a mod, you get tied to follow this ♥♥♥♥'s rules.

I am also the best memer in the game right now. Since the last two got banned.

What is bad about the game?

Besides the 10 year old kids griefing all the wilderness, ♥♥♥♥ing up the chat and begging to be citizens, the game is ♥♥♥♥ing terrible, looks like the engine this was made with is called POOtato. You can't build over 120 Z-Axis because the game bugs. The tutorial makes you clueless about anything, the humour is a piece of ♥♥♥♥. The characters sucks ♥♥♥♥, also that the "Sandbox" is a ♥♥♥♥ing lie, you must pay for every single block, and the game itself doesn't tell you how to grind gold, you have to ask someone to tell you to go to "/tele Megazoo", which was made by a rich ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who loves being the developer's pet.

What about the "Frequently Updated!" feature?

Look, hun. It's 13/2/2016 and since december of 2014 we don't get an update with something actually useful.
The only updates are about "GAME IS GETTING H4XD UPDATE UR PESSWORD!!!!11ELEVEN", how come it not been hacked before? This game is broke as ♥♥♥♥, you get stuck in the floor if you have too much lag.

Is it worth a try?

No. Unless you want high volume cancerigenous fail of dubstep music that loop over and over, autistic noobs everywhere and experienced players leaving you aside, don't try this crap.

You have over 2000 hours on record.

I used to like the game. Very much, my love knew no bounds for this. Too sad the dev was a ♥♥♥♥ when everything was going uphill. Thinking he can just shut me up to prevent noobs knowing the truth behind this, do you really think you can stop me, Robby? Ban me, i dare you. But first i take my translation back, and the $50 i gave you. Oh! because in this game you have to pay to have cool ♥♥♥♥.

F2P? P2W?

Mostly Pay to Enjoy. You can't buy cool ♥♥♥♥ unless you buy plat items for unfair prices.
To have a real town you must pay 10 Dollars. Is it worth it? NO. because it's a 9 region place, you have to expand it at least 5 times to have a decent place. Which expands go from 10p to 60p, around $200 to get a decent town.

Game is dead?

Kill confirmed, amirite. 10-20 players online in this "MMO", lol, what a joke right?

Why MMO?

Dev thought this was going to be a cool idea. Don't ask me, ask him, if you don't get banned while asking, too.

3D game? you named that before, you don't fool me, ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Yes! 3D feature, isn't that ♥♥♥♥ing fantastic? you need to pay $30 to get it! It's basically the same game, same server.
But glitchy as ♥♥♥♥ (more than the original, even.)

EDIT: Region.

Yes, there are 16x16 regions in this game, which you need at least 5p (5 Dollars) to expand 500 blocks of the region, this means you have a very limited space to build amazing ♥♥♥♥. You either have to be rich to get to make something cool and you must delete all blocks that you are not able to see to save some space. This of course could ♥♥♥♥ up your experience, making 3D art is a bad idea.

And if you bought those expensive piece of ♥♥♥♥ blocks you still have to buy more if you want to make your building large. Because regions are small as ♥♥♥♥. 15p to max out the region limit which is at least 10 Dollars or more. With that money just buy any kind of game that is not this crap.

Edit 2 was removed since it was unecessary, just showed off some pics of how many ♥♥♥♥♥♥ buildings are considered "Building sensations" to the game. Few cement houses with broken roof, resumed.

EDIT 3: The end

I got permanently banned the day 20/4/2016, the reason was a poorly made tactic directed to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like me. He deleted my latest post and wanted an agressive message from me to have an excuse to ban me without breaking his own rules. But he did break his rules by deleting a post that was harmless, friendly. He got the agressive message from me but, it wasn't THAT agressive, all i said was that he should be disappointed at himself for doing such unproffesional thing and i called his moderator team Gestapo, that was the mostly offensive thing i have said to him besides all these insults in the review. How can you stop a 40 year old virgin from getting his revenge in his own rules? you can't, overall if he doesn't know how to react to internet.

I put quite a few hours into this game, as well as bought the founder's pack to help support the dev. The game has a small amount of people that play, and it really feels like my own world rather than an MMO. The world is also very littered with the blocks from people who played the game for maybe thirty minutes, and never came back. I will probably check in every now and then. If your computer is a potato, download 8bitMMO, if not, download Trove instead.

This is not a short review. I do not believe even this volume of words can fully capture every façade of my interpretation for this game, but if you wish to know more, you can message me.

I do not recommend this game. However, I believe this game deserves an honest and clear assessment on my part as an avid player. Before continuing with my reason for this review, I would like to take this moment to explain that I love this game, and I still do. However, this game has definite flaws and it's far from what it claims to be. This review will serve as a way to prevent false expectations on the part of new players, and to hopefully clear any misunderstanding people may have about this game.

I will first address the claims made in the trailer. It must be noted, that the trailer shown is extremely outdated. It is around 2 years old and every one of the players seen in the sped-up building sequence are either retired or have effectively quit the game. Secondly, the town-building sequence is a staged act. It took approximately 5 attempts for the players to coordinate the task effectively (kjh787 went to bed around the third attempt, I believe). Yes, you can create a dungeon in this game, but at great cost. For most players, it takes well over 3 weeks to accumulate the time and resources necessary to lay out a proper dungeon with scenery, aesthetics, and a linear storyline. Fortunately, establishing a town is very simple and fairly cost-effective. However, do not expect this to be a common sight; the town seen at 0:28 of the trailer is known as Thunder Moon. It is built by El Dromedario, arguably the best builder the game has ever seen (was also responsible for the dragon that stands as the symbol for the game itself). Sadly, the declining playerbase has left players with a very limited option to actually join towns since the mayor must be online to add a citizen. One part I will say the trailer does explain in full truth is the immensity of its open world sandbox. Unlike Minecraft, 8bitmmo does not have a procedurally generated terrain. The wilderness is composed of a few "worlds" of massive size and once in a blue moon, another world is added to compensate for the growing amount of player structures to prevent overcrowding. It is a great place to explore, and there is much to see. This is the greatest perk of a completely player-made environment.

Now I will tackle the aspects of this game, and from my experience as a player, my assessment of how these aspects have been handled since its initial steam release. You will notice that of all these reviews, I have played the most recorded hours on it using Steam. As of the publication of this review though, I have played only slightly over a year; significantly less than most alleged regulars of the game. I have however, consumed a profuse amount of time building structures and towns on a personal agenda and therefore, I believe I can reliably explain different parts of this game as well as the difficulties that I have endured in this time. This is an open world sandbox game where the player is given the choice to build anything he/she chooses, it is a game of boundless possibilities. However, more said on this part would be reduced to nothing more than meaningless semantics. The choice of construction blocks for this game are very limited; as of this review, the most recent non-plat block to be released is the Dice (January 15th, 2015). Even despite this limit of blocks however, players have been able to create surprisingly opulent structures. This is the part that depresses me the most.

The truth of the matter is, construction in this game is tedious, unrewarding, and inefficient. If you expect to build something fantastic in this game for the slightest sake of reward or recognition, you will be severely disappointed. Perhaps if you catch the attention of Robby Zinchak, the sole developer of this game, you may have your creation displayed on the sidebar and blogged. This game however, ironically betrays the very notion of a player-made environment. Beyond the construction and the fame, there is a ceiling which players have failed to pass for a very long time. For a game with such a heavy emphasis on player creation, players have surprisingly little influence on the actual development of the game and can change almost nothing substantial to make the game better for future players. When a player spawns, he finds himself in an area known as the Root, this is the central network all players respawn or find links to other worlds and cities. It has been well over two years since this place has seen any substantial change. There are three links to PVP arenas (one of which cannot function without the host, who has gone inactive), and three links to ancient cities where two of mayors have also long gone inactive.

The linkpads to the dungeons make no sense: The only mandatory dungeons are the Offices of LOL and the Underground Hipster Dungeon. The Hipster dungeon is grouped among three other dungeons. The three dungeons are not mandatory and consequently confuse players who actually need to go to the Hipster dungeon but cannot find their way. I do not complain about the layout of the Root, but I am thoroughly agitated that most, if not all of it, has become vestigial. Despite this, Mr. Zinchak expressed no interest in making any changes to Root. There was even a spelling error on one of the signs, spelling "Dungeons" as "Dugeons". That spelling error was present for over a year and a half, only to be corrected because I had to personally point it out while the developer was in-game. Apart from a respawn area and a link to the questpad, Root serves almost no other purpose for recurring players.

I want to change this game for the better, and I have not forsaken the willingness to do so. However, my patience has been tested to the extreme. I will next describe the tutorial of this game. I have taken notes and recorded common player responses to the tutorial, and even created an alternate account simply for the sake of running it again. The current tutorial, for the lack of a better word, is abysmal. It is a mere obstacle course that teaches basic controls and leads the player directly to Root upon completion. It doesn't teach the player how to build or open shop. Therefore, I decided to personally spent over 40 dollars worth of premium currency to construct an entirely new tutorial that implemented a mandatory building tutorial along with an entire recreation of the Root spawn area, making it more effective for players to locate the areas they needed to reach. I furthermore wrote the dialogue for each NPC of the tutorial, eliminating the excessive dialogue that was only present for the sake of humor. Despite all my efforts in this venture, Mr. Zinchak released the following statement: "I don't have any plans for changing the tutorial, but I would like to see what you made anyways :)". As far as I know, he did not respond to my email that contained the dialogue script for the NPC's. I could not bring myself to create anything more ambitious ever since the failure of this project.

I do not dislike the developer. On the contrary, I encourage him to continue developing this game to the best of his ability. But when Mr. Zinchak and several regulars expressed their disdain for the failure of Steam reviews to accurately capture the essence of the game, I first convinced Chris_Ramos to write his story, and then decided to write mine's. I am aware that players will always form a false judgment on this game and I present no exception. However you love or dislike the game is unique to your own experiences and I believe if you do find your calling in this game as I have, then this game can be a wonderful place with a supportive (albeit strict) community. My in-game name is TheGreatOnion, and if you decide to try this game for yourself, ask me if you have any questions or concerns and I will help you in any way I can.
